Morecambe top Pie Chart

Morecambe have the best pies in the top four divisions of English football according to research done by Tom Dickinson and published in this morning's Daily Mail. And Darlington's are the best value.

Morecambe may be languishing towards the fag-end of League Two, but their pies (courtesy of small local bakery 'Potts Pies') are decidedly top-flight. The huge meaty offerings were even dished up on a plate with mushy peas. Result! They also had Lancashire hotpot. It was almost too much.

Some clubs did not fare so well.

Readers of this site might remember an article last winter in which Dickinson had a go at the pies at Walsall. His comments were not very well received after he claimed the pastry wasn't very good.

'We are pie pioneers, so I don't know where Mr Dickinson is coming from,' said the club press office. Walsall South MP Bruce George even went so far as to release a statement defending the pies at the Bescot Stadium, too, claiming 'sometimes it is the highlight of the game for me'.

Dickinson also commented that during his research some of the friendliest fans were in the South West. At Plymouth he was forced to drink an 'orchard- worth of cider' to wash his pie down. And at Yeovil, whilst purchasing his pie, he noticed a sign saying 'Soup (Past sell-by-date) clearance 50p'.

Magnificent, out-of-date soup for sale. Openly. Where else in the Football League could this happen? Yeovil Town, I love you.

There is no mention of the pies at Edgar Street in the article.
