The end of the current transfer window is at 5pm this afternoon. And no doubt most League managers including Hereford United's John Trewick will spend much of the day on the phone wheeling and dealing.
Whilst any transfer may need to ratified by the Football League and therefore not immediately announced, the basic details have to be with the League by 5pm.
After that time, there is a week in which no transfers can take place.
From then emergency transfers are allowed.
Outside all transfer windows though, any club may still sign players on an emergency basis (such as if they had no goalkeepers available) if they obtain special dispensation from their competition's governing body, such as the Football League.
Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they were unattached free agents when the previous window closed.
