From 73 applications, six charities have been shortlisted to follow in the footsteps of Help for Heroes and Marie Curie Cancer Care, the previous and current League charities.

The chosen charities are: Alzheimer's Society, British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Care, The Everyman Male Cancer Campaign, Help the Hospices and Samaritans.

"The Football League is committed to supporting good causes, especially those demonstrating close community links around The League's 72 clubs," said Football League Director of Marketing and Communications, Gavin Megaw .

"We are delighted to be providing fans with the opportunity to have their say in the selection of our Official Charity Partner for the 2011/12 Season and encourage them to cast
their vote via our website.

"We had a fantastic response to the invitation to become The Football League's next charity partner and the standard of applications was exceptionally high.

"Every one of the shortlisted charities represents a good cause that relates to football fans in and around our 72 clubs."

The vote will stay open for three weeks, closing at midday on Wednesday 8 December with the two most popular going to The Football League Board who will select the Official Charity Partner.

Due to huge support from clubs and fans across England and Wales, over £300,000 was raised for Help for Heroes during the 2009/10 and this season's fundraising target for Marie Curie Cancer Care has been set at £500,000.
