Fancy dress, face painting and a special fire fighters challenge are all on the menu for Hereford United's first ever Family Festival Game at Edgar Street this Saturday when the Bulls take on Crawley Town who are currently second in the League.
And Director of Football, Gary Peters, is hopeful that families can be encouraged to come and watch.
"We want to get as many people through as we possibly can," he said.
"Partly because the city of Hereford deserves a Football League club and we have to make sure, between us all, that we stay in the Football League."
The aim of the Family Football Festival campaign, which has been launched by The Football League, is to attract new families to games this autumn.
Special family tickets costing £25 – for two adults and up to three children – and £20 – for one adult and up to four children – are on sale for the Crawley game. More details on 0844 276 1939 or call in at the club office.
The Bulls are offering club shop vouchers for a fancy dress competition for young and old which will be staged before kick-off and there will be face painting for the youngsters.
The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are also joining in the fun and they will provide the half-time entertainment with fire fighters Hannah Densley and Martin Lown competing in a ‘Toughest Fire Fighter Challenge’. This is a traditional, worldwide challenge in the Fire Service, a fitness test for personnel based around the task of firefighting. Hannah and Martin will undertake a series of equipment carries, followed by a race to take a penalty against Edgar the Bull. And if they score they get to carry him off in a fireman’s lift.
Martin Lown from Hereford and Worcester Fire & Rescue Service is Station Commander for South Herefordshire. Born in Crawley – yes Crawley, Martin moved to Herefordshire nine years.
In January he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro whilst wearing fire kit and carrying a Breathing Apparatus set, and raised £5,785 for The Fire Fighters Charity. He is now preparing to undertake a nine day 80km trek across the glaciers and volcanoes of Iceland, again wearing fire kit and carrying a Breathing Apparatus set to raise more funds for the charity.
Hannah Densley will be attempting to complete the London Marathon in April 2012. She will be wearing fire kit and carrying a Breathing Apparatus set and hopes to raise funds for The Fire Fighters Charity. Hannah, from Ross-on-Wye, is a fire fighter on Red Watch at Hereford Fire Station and competes in national running and biking events.
