Season Preview: Part One

Alfreton - Last season 15th, Bookies 80/1 15th - Little improvement is expected from Nicky Law's men on last season's finish. Losing 17 goal top scorer Nathan Jarman to Conf North side Chester is a sign that the Reds will struggle against the financial tide this season. Merely standing still will be a bonus with a replacement forward yet to arrive.

Barrow - Last season 13th, Bookies 250/1 18th= - A lot of credit for Barrow's mid table finish last season had to go to strike duo Andy Cook and Adam Boyes, who hit 33 goals between them. Cook's departure for Grimsby has seen him replaced with former Wrexham forward Obi Anoruo, who has proven prolific at lower levels but failed to make an impression last term with the Dragons. Another side that will struggle to compete financially.

Braintree - Last season 12th, Bookies 200/1 17th - Having lost three of their side from last term to better money elsewhere, the Iron's only summer recruits so far have been four 20 year olds - three midfielders and a full back. Two of their top three scorers are among the departed trio, leaving 14 goal Sean Marks awaiting a regular strike partner.

Cambridge - Last season 9th, Bookies 16/1 6th - Former youth coach Jez George has quietly built up a solid side on a smallish budget at the Abbey Stadium. After burning through cash reserves in their early Conference years, the U's have become one of the better run sides in the division relying on developing younger players to build a team. The return of winger Robbie Willmott and a number of other interesting signings should mean they are not too far off the pace.

Dartford - Last season 2nd Conf South (p), Bookies 250/1 18th= - The Darts have retained the bulk of their promotion squad after ending last season nine points short of champions Woking. They will remain part time with a small squad bolstered by non-contract and loan signings, with most expecting them to be also-rans as they look to walk before they can run. Only two new signings have been made so far, with Conference veteran Mark Arber looking a reasonably shrewd signing for a side short of experience at this level.

Ebbsfleet - Last season 14th, Bookies 250/1 18th= - Boss Liam Daish has performed minor miracles keeping the Fleet in the Conference over the past few seasons. The club's longest serving manager will look to former Bulls pair Moses Ashikodi and Nathan Elder for his goals this season after losing top scorer Callum Willock to Dover on financial grounds, one of a number of star performers poached from his side this summer. Daish has had to smash up so many of his own sides due to his ever-decreasing budget, he's used to the summer rebuilding job.
