Ian Wells, who played for Hereford United from 1985 to 1987, has died. He was 48.Just 20 at the time, Ian joined the Bulls from West Midlands League side Harrison in summer 1985. He made 51 league appearances and scored 12 goals in the two seasons he was at Edgar Street.
His first goal for the Bulls was at home against Burnley in September 1985. But perhaps his best remembered goal came the following month when he scored at Arsenal in a Milk Cup replay.
He joined Gresley Rovers in July 1988.
After leaving Gresley in 1989 Ian went into pub management and managed the Thorley Pub in Stoke and then went on to manage a wine bar in Wolverhampton.
Gresley Rovers boss Frank Northwood is set to reinforce his squad by signing Hereford United striker Ian Wells according to the Burton Mail.
Wells, 23, is leaving Edgar Street because of injury problems – but believes he is capable of continuing his career on a part-time basis.
Northwood said last night: “Ian has plenty of league experience, so he will obviously be a real asset if he can steer clear of injury.”
Wells, based in Wolverhampton, trained with Rovers last night and expects to receive clearance to sign for them by the end of the month.
“Insurance compensation for Ian is being sorted out by the PFA at the moment and should be through by the end of the month,” said Northwood.
