Braintree Town trace their history back to 1898 as the works side for the Crittall Window Company. Their nickname of "The Iron" stems from these manufacturing origins. They competed in a variety of southeastern leagues before rising to The Conference South in 2006/07. Promotion to Conference National came in 2011/12 following a championship-winning season in the South. Their debut season saw them finish in a respectable 12th position. Apart from a brief period in the seventies, they have played at Cressing Road since 1923.
The stadium has seating for 553 in a total capacity of 4151 with no segregation in force on Saturday. A number of seats are normally provided in the main stand. Admission is £15 for adults, £10 for seniors, £5 for U16's and £3 for U11's. There is a premium of £1 for a seat, which must be purchased at the turnstile on entry.
HUISA – depart from Radford's at 8.30am with a fare of £23 (non-members £25). Seats can be booked through The Club office (08442 761939).
BY CAR – Braintree is midway between the Bishops Stortford junction on the M11 and Colchester meaning you have a choice of using the M25 route and "up" the M11 or the M42/M6/A14 route to Cambridge then "down" the M11.
For the M25 route, use the Oxford/M40 roads to join the M25 then leave at J27 and take the M11 north. Leave the M11 at J8 and follow the A120 directions as for the M42 route below.
For my preferred M42 route, follow the usual path via the M5 then continue on the M42 to join the M6 (south) at M42 J7A (sign London). As you approach the end of the M6 (where it joins the M1) branch left and join the A14 (sign Felixstowe). Continue on the A14 passing Kettering and Huntingdon before joining the M11 south just outside Cambridge (sign London). Leave the M11 at J8 and take the A120 east (sign Stansted Airport/Colchester). Continue on the A120 for about 16/17 miles until you reach a roundabout at the junction with the B1018 where you take the first exit onto Cressing Road (sign Braintree College). After just over half a mile, turn left into Clockhouse Way. The ground will be clearly visible from here.
Distance for either route is between 190 and 200 miles and you should allow around three hours forty minutes and possibly more if the M25 is busy. There is limited parking at the ground at £2, but the car park will close regardless of capacity at 2.45pm.
PARKING - There is limited parking at the ground (£2). Please note this car park closes 15 minutes before kick off time.
PARKING - There is limited parking at the ground (£2). Please note this car park closes 15 minutes before kick off time.
TRAIN – The ground is about a mile from the station, which is served by trains from London Liverpool Street.
ALEHOUSES – The Braintree FC club will be available and is accessible from inside the ground as no segregation is in force on Saturday. The Orange Tree pub in Clockhouse Way is a five-minute walk from the ground whereas the local ‘Spoons (The Picture House) in the town centre is near to the train station and is CAMRA listed. The Hare and Hounds (104 High Garrett), The King William IV (114 London Road) and The Eagle (192 Coggeshall Road) have all received good reviews for both food and their range of drinks.
There are MacDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut outlets at roundabout on the A120.
Enjoy.
