Morecambe Post Massive Loss As Cheltenham Look For More Fans

With several non-league sides putting out signals of financial distress this week, some Football League sides are also warning that the grass isn't that green in the promised land.

Morecambe have reported a loss of £793,776 for last season, meaning they have lost £2million in the last three years combined since their move to the Globe Arena. The club undertook a financial review last summer that will see them 'at least break even' by 2016 with turnover at the club largely static at £2.6million and wages only slightly down to £1.8million.

The losses are currently being underwritten by club chairman Peter McGuigan and the board, with a search for new investors having been ongoing since last summer. The club have previously stated a desire to see average attendances rise to 2,700 but they are yet to break the 2,000 mark.

At Cheltenham, a Q&A session on Thursday night saw chairman Paul Baker question the passion of their fans as he compared the funds raised by tenant Gloucester City's supporters against their own fans' efforts.

Baker told the audience that the club's board were staggered by the apathy shown to the club by locals, with gates dwindling over recent seasons. Another Director told fans that they needed 1,500 more supporters on a regular basis to sustain League Two football and a third, Paul Godfrey, added:

"Cheltenham is not a place that is passionate about anything and when we score a goal some fans just sit there."

Baker also told fans that the board were going to dictate the style of play to the management, telling the audience that they were not happy with the style on offer this season and that they wanted to play more like Swansea.
