Attendance at Edgar Street up 14%

Attendances at Edgar Street, the home of Hereford United, are up 14% compared with last season.

Figures from the Football League show that the average gate to date is 2443 compared with 2139 last season.

Whilst the 'Kids for a Quid' promotion will have helped the numbers through the turnstiles, the actual increase is 304 per game.

Not all League Two clubs are registering increased attendances this season. Near neighbours Cheltenham Town's current average is 2962 down from 3243 last season.

Pitman impressed with Bury at Shrewsbury

Hereford United manager Jamie Pitman took the short trip up the A49 last Tuesday to watch tomorrow's opponents Bury at Shrewsbury.

"We saw Bury the other night at Shrewsbury and were very impressed by them as they are a very good side and move the ball very well," Pitman told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"They are obviously a threat up front with the front line that they have got, and it is going to be a very tough game.

"They are a very good side who have been in and or around it [the promotion race] for a few years now and have kept improving so they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

"They've organised their team very well. They've got some good players with experience.

"It was a very accomplished performance by them at Shrewsbury."

Looking at the League table, Pitman said he felt the Bulls need another five or six wins this season.

"We are capable of doing that if we perform to the level we've done in recent months."

In other news season ticket holders are asked to use voucher no 17 for tomorrow's game.

BN Goes Cold In Turkey

Bulls fans wanting to keep up with matters at Edgar Street during their holidays might want to avoid Turkey.

The country's archaic copyright laws has seen a court block access to Blogger, the site that Bulls News runs on, in the country after the TV rights holder for Turkish Superleague games lodged a complaint.

Digiturk claimed that several Blogger sites were hosting illegal coverage of games it had rights to, and a Diyarbakir court has blocked the site as a result. An estimated 600,000 blogs are kept by Turks, and over 18 million access the site on a regular basis.

Turkey has a history of over-reacting when it comes to websites. It banned Youtube for two years after videos claimed to be insulting to the country's founder were posted to the site.

Zac Evans joins Newtown

Former Hereford United youngster Zac Evans has joined Newtown.

The 19 year-old centre midfielder was released by the Bulls in January after four months at Edgar Street and the Presteigne-born teenager joins the Welsh Premier League for the first time.

He made his debut in the Football League Trophy second round 3-0 defeat by Exeter City on 5 October 2010 but despite a one year deal at the club, he left early. He was a Wales International at both Under 17 and 19 and is a former Cardiff City youth team player.

Cobblers Appoint Johnson

Northampton have named Gary Johnson as their new manager on a two and a half year deal.

The former Yeovil, Bristol City, and Peterboro manager takes over on a two and a half year deal despite the club claiming they would not be rushing a decision. They sacked Ian Sampson just two days ago.

Chairman Dennis Cardoza told their official site: "I am delighted that we have got our man. As soon as we parted with Ian Sampson, we identified Gary as our top target and we moved quickly to get him."

Plymouth Set For Administration

Plymouth are set to go into Administration after the taxman launched a High Court move to appoint their own Administrator.

The club's board were set to meet today to discuss the matter, with a boardroom split over the future direction threatening to derail any rescue attempts, but HMRC have now gone to court in a bid to appoint an Administrator with the club's protection from action now expired.

The club had named P&A Partnership as their preferred Administrator, with Brendan Guilfoyle heading the firm. He has previously handled insolvencies at Leeds, Luton, and Crystal Palace.

The Pilgrims have a reported £13million of debt and are a 1/12 offering at the bookies to be relegated to League Two. Consultant Peter Ridsdale says the club needs £5million to avoid Administration and complete the season, but the club's Japanese owners have sent over just £350,000 to be 'drip-fed' into the ailing club.

UPDATE: Plymouth have entered Administration. The Administrator, P&A Partnership, told the BBC they have only a short time to secure a buyer for the club: "A number of interested parties have declared an interest in acquiring the club. It is imperative that a preferred bidder is identified who can provide ongoing funding by 17 March 2011 at the latest."

Bury To Check On Jones

Bury will check on goalscoring midfielder Mike Jones ahead of tomorrow's match at Edgar Street.

The former Tranmere trainee missed the midweek win over Shrewsbury with a virus and will be assessed as late as possible prior to naming the sides. Also missing will be defender Ben Futcher and striker Nicky Ajose, with the Man Utd trainee scoring seven times in 18 games since joining on loan.

Loan defender Tom Lees, on loan from Leeds, told the Bury Times that the Shakers had to be wary of the Bulls: “There are no easy games, and Hereford are one of the form teams in the division,

“This season, in the big night games, like against Chesterfield and Shrewsbury twice, we have played well but when we have played some of the lesser teams, like Stockport, we have struggled to put them to bed. No game is easy, but you climb the table by winning in games where there is not as much hype around them.

“Winning those matches, starting with Hereford on Saturday, will be the key for us. We are third in the league now and teams will see us as a scalp, especially those near the bottom who are fighting for their lives, and we have to make sure the strange results that pop up are not at our expense.”

Manager Alan Knill told the press after Tuesday's game that he would be looking to sign up to three new faces before Saturday, but told their official site:

'We need to bring some players in, but it's not gone very well this week. A lot of clubs do not want to let players out at the moment. It's changed, clubs do not carry big squads anymore and a lot of teams are like us with small squads. They can't afford to carry big squads. We've asked about five players and have been knocked back on all of them.'

Bury will be a hard game says Pitman

Hereford United manager Jamie Pitman is well aware that Bury are on a decent run of form. Last Tuesday they defated Shrewsbury 3-0 at the New Meadow. But he feels that the Bulls can take on the so-called better sides in the League.

"We know we can compete against the better sides," Pitman told the Worcester News.

"We have only lost one league game in 11, although we have drawn a few too many, but it’s given us plenty of confidence to compete with most teams in this league.

"It was an impressive result at Oxford. The players did everything we asked them to and put into practice what we had worked on.

"Bury are going well and have been knocking on the door for a while now. They are a decent side and it’s going to be a hard, competitive game."

With Harry Pell available from Bristol Rovers for another month, Pitman has a virtually fully fit squad to choose from for the game.

Only Dan Connor, Ryan Valentine and Rob Purdie are not available.

Pitman Dodges Bullet

Jamie Pitman has managed to dodge the Manager of the Month award for February.

The award goes to Graham Turner, who kicked off March with a 3-0 home loss to Bury, while January's winner Dario Gradi will be glad to see the back of the trophy. After winning the award his side have won just one point from six games in February, conceding 17 goals.

News Round Up

Darlington boss Mark Cooper has confirmed he will stay with the club until the end of the season, and will discuss a new contract then. The creditors that put Darlington's stadium company into Administration say they only want their money back. The £1.7million loan was supposed to have been paid back more than a year ago, and is now £2.3million with interest, with one of the pair saying Raj Singh offered only £500,000 up front to clear it and a further £500,000 based on the team's performance.

Port Vale boss Jim Gannon has had to deny BBC reports that fan favourite midfielder Gary Roberts had been told he could go out on loan. A columnist for local paper The Sentinel has called for Gannon to leave, claiming he has lost the dressing room. Torquay have lost the services of loan midfielder Ryan Gilligan after the player suffered a family bereavement. Gilligan returns to Northampton, but cannot play for them until the loan expires in eight days.

On the day the club's board make 'the biggest decision in the club's 124 year history', a loan made to the club by one of Plymouth's supporters trust is to be investigated by the Charity Commission. The Plymouth Argyle Supporters Training and Development Trust made a £330,000 loan to the club, secured on the stadium, earlier this year but the Commission is now investigating whether the loan should have been made, and whether club director Paul Stapleton had a conflict of interest as he is also a trustee of the Trust.

Dagenham boss John Still has been named as the bookies odds-on favourite for the Bradford job. Former Hibernian boss John Hughes, current caretaker Peter Jackson, and former fans favourite Dean Windass are also high in the betting. Former Bulls loanee James Walker has joined Woking after his trial at Grimsby ended with the sacking of manager Neil Woods.

Weymouth's future is again in doubt following the resignation of major shareholder George Rolls. The remaining board members have received an offer for the club worth £25,000 but have rejected it as the money 'won't go far'. The club is claimed to be losing £3,000 a week. Former Weymouth chief executive Gary Calder has quit as chairman of Rushden just weeks after buying into the club and taking the role. No reason has yet been given.

Accrington have loaned defender Jonathan Bateson to Altrincham for a month. The 21 year old signed from Blackburn last summer but hasn't featured for Stanley's first team since October. Southend midfielder Ryan Hall has been granted bail, at the second attempt, pending an appeal over the sentence received after admitting a charge of affray. He is eligible to play for the team at Morecambe tomorrow.

Sky Sports claim that Northampton want Gary Johnson as their new boss. The former Yeovil man left Peterboro two months ago after less than a year. Crewe boss Dario Gradi says his attempts to sign a loan defender from Man City have fallen through after Kolo Toure's suspension after failing a drugs test meant his target was needed by the Premier League club.

Burton have signed winger Simon Whaley until the end of the season. The former Norwich man was recently on non-contract terms at Doncaster. Crewe have signed defender Ashley Westwood on a deal until the end of the season. The 33 year old left Kettering in January.

The deadline for Saturday's match is at 2.30pm. You can also send in your predictions for Tuesday's trip to Stevenage Borough, should you wish.

Preview: Bulls vs Bury

The Bulls entertain Bury on Saturday in another Kids for a Quid game at Edgar Street.

The two sides met at Gigg Lane in September, with the Bulls earning what was then a rare away point thanks to a debut penalty from Guillem Bauza. That goal almost gave the Bulls all three points, but Kenny Lunt's dismissal for two yellows strained the Bulls to the limits and they eventually conceded in the last minute to drop two vital points. The previous season the Shakers did the double, winning 3-1 at Edgar Street. Since the Bulls returned to the League Bury's five goals have come from only two players - Ryan Lowe and Mike Jones.

The Bulls might have to start playing in orange to improve their home form. Despite being virtually unbeatable on the road in recent weeks they have gained just three points from four home games. The defence has been quietly racking up the clean sheets, with three in the last four matches, while Stuart Fleetwood and Waide Fairhurst have been earning the headlines for their work at the other end of the pitch.

Bury travel to Edgar Street in the last of the automatic promotion spots after winning 3-0 at Shrewsbury on Tuesday night. They average two goals a game on the road, more than their home record, but they also managed to lose 2-1 to Stockport in what is the Hatters' only win in 13 games. Top scorer Ryan Lowe has 22 goals and now holds a club record after scoring in each of the last eight matches. Fellow Bulls tormentor Mike Jones is second top scorer on a less impressive seven.

Hereford United vs Bury, Edgar Street, Saturday 5th March, 3.00pm.

News Round Up

Darlington are reported to have blocked manager Mark Cooper from joining Grimsby. The Mariners were given permission to to speak to Cooper and assistant Richard Drysdale and offered the pair two year deals. Cooper's current contract runs out in the summer. Bradford interim boss Peter Jackson will be assisted by youth team coach David Wetherall after Jackson failed to land an unnamed candidate to be his no.2.

Swindon have named Paul Hart as their new manager until the end of the season. The 57 year old's last job was to keep Crystal Palace in the Championship last season. Assistant boss Peter Shirtliff has left the club in the wake of Danny Wilson's departure. Wrexham bidder Stephanie Booth says the winning bidder for the club will be announced on Saturday. The Supporters Trust met with the local council and club officials yesterday to further talks on a Trust-led buyout.

Southend are trialling Liverpool teenage winger Jason Banton with a view to a loan move. The 18 year old played for the Reds youth side that hammered Southend's youth team last month. Plymouth's current owners want to sell their Home Park ground and lease it back in a bid to avoid Administration, saying the plan would raise £2million. The suggestion has been shot down by the exisiting board. There are two bidders set to move for the club if it enters Administration.

Port Vale say assistant boss Geoff Horsfield has not been suspended by the club, but offered to stay away to 'make things easier for the club'. The board say they are currently 'open minded' and expect to conclude their investigation by Monday, and will consult lawyers before announcing any decision. Macclesfield and Wycombe have both been charged over the 21 man brawl at the end of their match last weekend.

Northampton chairman Dennis Cardoza says caretaker boss Malcolm Crosby does not expect to stay at the club when the club appoints a new boss, but Cardoza says Crosby will be considered for the job if he improves results. Cheltenham have extended the loan of Blackpool defender Ashley Eastham for a second month.

Southend winger Ryan Hall has been jailed for 20 weeks after pleading guilty to charges of affray and posessing an offensive weapon during a night out in December. Lincoln loan defender Gavin Hoyte won't play again this season after damaging knee ligaments in a game two weeks ago. The Arsenal youngster needs surgery and is likely to be out for six months.

Northampton's sacked boss Ian Sampson has spoken to the LMA about his dismissal: “Given the budget at my disposal at the beginning of the season and our plan for the development of younger players, I thought our mid-table position at the turn of the year was about right." Accrington boss John Coleman says Bradford wanted to speak to him to be their next manager, but Stanley asked for too much compensation.

Signed HUFC Shirt Up For Grabs

A signed Hereford United shirt is up for grabs and it's all in a good cause.

Below is an explanation from Stuart Hawker (Titterton):

Basically a fellow long suffering Bull, Richard Powell, and myself are cycling down the length of the English/Welsh border to raise money for a charity called Brainwave which my daughter, (who was unfortunately was born with Developmental Delay) goes to and has flourished because of their program. Ex-Bull Gareth Davies may be joining us, work permitting.

We intend to start on the 8th September 2011 and want to raise as much money as possible. We will roughly follow the Offas Dyke boundary (only on some nice tarmac) and will do it in 3 days. All of the money raised will be going to the charity as we will be funding overnight stays etc ourselves.

Recently I wrote to the club asking if they were able to help me in any way with a charity bike ride in September. Anyway to my surprise 2 days later a signed home shirt arrived at the door.

Now it's up for sale on the Bulls Banter forum.

For more details please visit: http://borderbikeride.weebly.com/index.html

Anyone wishing to sponsor the cycle ride please contact Stuart through his site.

To support Brainwave please go to: http://www.justgiving.com/Stuart-Hawker

News Round Up

Plymouth consultant Peter Ridsdale is to step back from the day-to-day business of the club after a dispute with the board. Some of the existing board want to remain at the club, but Ridsdale believes they should all leave. Ridsdale will continue to talk to investors, and will present options to a Friday board meeting where a decision on Administration will be made.

Peterboro have offered a 'Chairman's choice' season ticket - for £15,000. Claimed to be the most expensive season ticket in the world, the ticket gives the holder a Directors Box place and all the free pies they can eat. The ticket also comes with the title of 'Honorary President'. Gary Johnson has been named as the 3/1 bookies favourite for the Northampton job. Also quoted are Steve Guinan at 20/1 and Simon Davey at 25/1.

Barnet have signed midfielder Mark Byrne from Nottm Forest on loan until the end of the season, and taken Crystal Palace's teenage full back Matty Parsons for a month. Byrne spent the first half of the season at Underhill. Morecambe's players are to pay for one of the free coaches on offer to take their fans to their crunch match at Barnet as a gesture of thanks for their support.

Wilson Quits Swindon

Danny Wilson has quit as manager of League One strugglers Swindon.

The club are expected to name his successor tomorrow with Chairman Andrew Fitton saying a 'proven, senior manager' has been lined up. Wilson leaves Swindon in the bottom four, three points short of safety with a game in hand, after just three points from the last 33.

Wilson took charge in December 2008 with the Robins in a similar desperate situation and guided them to safety before securing a play-off spot last term.

Meanwhile, Brentford have named caretaker boss Nicky Forster as their new manager. The 37 year old striker has earned 14 points from 18 since Andy Scott was sacked, keeping himself out of the side during that time.

Bulls lose Rovers Friendly

Hereford United were defeated 4-0 by Bristol Rovers in today's behind doors reserve friendly played at Ludlow.

Rovers put out a fairly strong side which included two trialists.

As yet there is no news of the Hereford United team.

Stanley Pay Debt To Revenue

Accrington Stanley have paid off their £9,000 debt to the HM Customs and Excise according to the Lancashire Telegraph.

Just in case they didn't pay, an auction had been arranged in which their seats and floodlights would have been sold but this has now been cancelled.

Cobblers Sack Sampson

Northampton have sacked manager Ian Sampson after last night's 3-2 home loss to Burton.

The Cobblers had pre-season promotion intentions but lie just 16th in the table. Sampson, appointed in September 2009, won just 29 of his 84 games in charge after replacing Stuart Gray. Assistant Malcolm Crosby will take temporary charge, with a club statement saying the board will not rush a decision.

Meanwhile, ex-Bull Andy Ferrell has joined Barrow on loan from Gateshead. The combative midfielder joins up with fellow ex-Bull Nick Chadwick at Holker Street.

Kids for a Quid For Bury Game Confirmed by Club

Hereford United have confirmed that next Saturday's home game against Bury will be another Kids for a Quid match.

The club have also said that the following two home matches, against Barnet and Crewe, will also be Kids for a Quid.

The £1 deal is available on the gate for all supporters, home and away, under the age of 14.

Meanwhile the club have revealed that they are looking for a piece of music when the team takes to the pitch just before kick-off.

Supporters are being asked to send their suggestions to BBC Hereford and Worcester during either Friday's Breakfast Show with Howard Bentham, Sport on Saturday with Terry Goodwin or next Tuesday Evening's Sportnight.

"United fans will be able to call, text or email in their suggestions and we will then collate them and pass them on," said BBC Hereford and Worcester’s sports editor Trevor Owens.

"I have been at some away grounds this season where it works really well so hopefully the fans will come up just with the right song for Edgar Street," he added.

Hooper for England?

Former Hereford United striker Gary Hooper is being tracked by Fabio Capello, the England manager, according to this morning's Times.

23 year old Hooper has scored 13 goals for Celtic in the SPL this season to date. He cost £2.4M from Scunthorpe last summer. They signed him from Southend after former Hereford United manager Graham Turner dropped out of the bidding.

If called up 'it would be a remarkable achievement for a player that began his career at non-league Grays Athletic and has meandered around such footballing backwaters such as Southend, Leyton Orient and Hereford United' says Sportingo.

Update 1pm: The Daily Mail is carrying the same story with the headline - Rejected by Spurs, loaned out to Hereford, offloaded to Scunthorpe...but now England beckons Celtic's Gary Hooper.

News Round Up

The PFA have loaned Plymouth a further sum to enable them to pay January's players wage bill. February's bill remains outstanding with a deadline of Friday for the club to go into Administration. Stockport goalkeeper coach Dave Timmins has left the club in favour of Tranmere. Timmins was credited with developing Joe Hart while at Shrewsbury.

Grimsby's Vice Chairman has quit the club after the board voted down his proposals on board changes. Mike Parker wanted voting rights to be based on financial investment into the club, while offering to put £500,000 in place to cover losses for the next 18 months, but it was rejected by the existing board. The Mariners hope to appoint Darlington boss Mark Cooper as their new manager before the weekend.

Port Vale boss Jim Gannon claims he has only been called to meet the board as a witness over his spat with Geoff Horsfield. He told the BBC he didn't need legal representation despite a club statement saying differently. Stockport bidder Mike Newton is to watch the club in action this Saturday. Talks are believed to be ongoing with the local press reporting that Graham Shaw, the man New York based Newton was going to have running the day-to-day aspects for his failed Port Vale bid, leaving his job this week.

Cardiff are being investigated by the Football League over a possible conflict of interest by Coventry owner Ray Ranson. The Guardian reports the former Man City player provided a loan to the club, with the terms suggesting the Bluebirds can't sell any of their players without his consent. If that is true it would breach FL rules.

No Charge For Tigers Pair

Bulls loan pair Sam Malsom and Tyler Weir are not costing Gloucester City a penny according to Tigers boss David Mehew.

The former Bristol Rovers player told This is Gloucestershire that he had to rely on the Supporters Trust to fund other signings, but the Bulls pair were free: "We've also been grateful that Jamie Pitman has allowed us to take both Tyler and Sam Malsom for nothing.

"He wants them to gain some experience and they will do that with us by playing games."

Malsom will return to Redditch next Saturday with the Tigers, but will face only a couple of the team that he played with in December after their financial crisis.

Lease Deal Needs Completing

As yet, there has been no news of the completion of a new lease, or leases, for Edgar Street, Hereford United's football ground.

And with council elections due in early May, it might be better to complete any deal before they take place in case control of the council changes to a leadership not as keen on supporting the football club.

This afternoon current leader Roger Phillips revealed he is to stand down although he hopes to continue as a councillor. It's probably fair to say that he has done as much as he reasonably could over the past few months to help steer the club towards a new lease deal. A new leader might not be so keen.

Hereford United needs a new long lease so it can plan ahead with reasonable certainty for the future. Until the announcement that it had come to an agreement with the Richardsons, who had held the first lease from the council, it was dificult to get all sides around a table. Now it's just the club and the council. Life should be easier.

Meanwhile, one Hereford United supporter has told BN that is he likely to throw his hat into the ring for the forthcoming election. He is expected to stand as an independent for an area just outside the City.

Results Round Up

Stockport have just 12 games left, less than any other side in danger, to save themselves after losing 2-1 at Cheltenham tonight and remain rooted to the foot of the table. It wasn't all good news for the Robins, who recorded their worst ever Football League attendance with just 2,191 through the gates. Torquay's financial position can't be much better after just 1,514 watched their 1-1 draw with Rotherham - some 900 under their season average. The Bulls slip a place in the table after Aldershot gained a point with a 1-1 draw with Gillingham, while Burton closed the gap with a 3-2 win at Northampton - also in front of a season low gate.

Lincoln eased their nerves with a 3-1 win over Oxford, in front of another season low crowd, with the U's remaining two points shy of the play-offs. Shrewsbury's ability to throw it all away was evident again as they went down 3-0 at home to Bury, with the Shakers taking the final automatic spot. Chesterfield's lead is up to nine points after a 4-1 win over Wycombe.

In the Conference Wimbledon had a goalless draw at Hayes and Yeading to extend their lead to four points, but Crawley have six games in hand. Luton won 1-0 at Forest Green to keep an outside chance of the title, and Rushden signalled a late play-off run with a 5-1 win over Bath.

At the foot of League One, Walsall beat Southampton 1-0 to move out of the bottom four. Bristol Rovers lost 1-0 at home to Colchester to go four points short of safety.

Reserves to play Bristol Rovers

Hereford United reserves are to play Bristol Rovers at Ludlow tomorrow (Wednesday).

As ever with reserve fixtures the game will be played behind closed doors.

And, according to the OS, assistant manager Russell Hoult is expected to make his debut in goal for the Bulls.

Hoult was registered as a player last week and was on the bench last Saturday at Oxford. He had to sit in the dug-out during the game whereas in the past he has been on the touchline helping manager Jamie Pitman.

Phillips to Referee on Saturday

Dave Phillips from West Sussex is set to referee next Saturday's League Two game at Edgar Street between Hereford United and Bury.

It will the second time Phillips, who is a policeman, has been in charge of a game at Edgar Street.

The first time was in November 2008 when Cheltenham were defeated 3-0 by the Bulls. Steve Guinan scored a brace that afternoon and the other came from Sam Gwynne, which was his first League goal. However Phillips promptly booked him for celebrating by taking his shirt off.

The Bulls met Phillips last season at Aldershot. The game was drawn 2-2. Tristan Plummer, on loan from Bristol City, scored a goal and also converted a penalty.

To date this season Phillips has refereed 24 games in which he has given out 83 yellow and 7 red cards.

Davey's Legacy Lives On

Hereford United are the dirtiest team in League Two this season so far. Much of the damage was done whilst Simon Davey was in charge but current manager Jamie Pitman hasn't yet stopped the Bulls getting so many cards.

The Bulls have picked up 64 yellows and five reds in 31 games. They have 74 disciplinary points – 11 more than second-from-bottom Port Vale.

Crewe are 'top' with just 30 points.

Meanwhile Wycombe's Dave Winfield is the division's so called dirtiest player with eleven points.

Winfield leads the disciplinary table with eleven points after his red card and nine League Two yellow cards.

Next on ten points are Northampton midfielder Abdul Osman, who has been dismissed twice this season, Hereford captain Michael Townsend and Port Vale’s Gary Roberts, who with ten bookings has been booked by referees more often than any other player.

Pell Set For Second Month

Harry Pell's loan spell from Bristol Rovers is to be extended into a second month.

The player twittered the news this afternoon. He has played six times so far since arriving at the end of January.

Meanwhile Jamie Pitman has been nominated for the February Manager of the Month award. He is up against Southend's Paul Sturrock, Shrewsbury's Graham Turner, and Accrington's John Coleman.

The winner will be announced on Friday morning around 10am on Sky Sports News.
