Plymouth Issue Plea For Funds

Plymouth's Administrator Brendan Guilfoyle has issued a plea to the preferred bidders to release funds to the club so that it can continue trading.

With the season just two days away, Guilfoyle has told Bishop International and it's leader Kevin Heaney to release funds to the club or face losing their preferred bidder status. Guilfoyle says the club has no money to start the season and needs an immediate cash injection with the wage bill also due at the end of the month.

The club has sold over 2,800 season tickets, but the money is locked in a seperate account and will only be released to Guilfoyle over the course of the season as games are played.

Pilgrims fans continue to work with rejected bidder James Brent over a rescue plan.

Young Bulls kick-off at Yeovil

Whilst the senior side start at Southend, Hereford United's youth team commence their new campaign on Saturday with a trip to Yeovil.

The game, which will take place at Alvington, will kick-off at 11am.

Once again the young Bulls are competing in the Football League Youth Alliance, South West Division, along with AFC Bournemouth, Swindon Town, Cheltenham Town, Plymouth Argyle, Oxford United, Torquay United, Swansea City and Exeter City.

Smaller squad but better squad says Keyte.

Hereford United chairman David Keyte has said that because of financial restraints manager Jamie Pitman will have a smaller squad to work with this season.

"With a season’s experience behind us, we feel that Jamie Pitman has improved the squad and that we have a stronger squad of players than last year – a smaller squad but a better squad," Keyte told the Hereford Times.

"But we all need to be aware that through financial constraints, every manager is having to work with smaller squads.

"Every club needs a bit of luck with injuries and, in our case, I am conscious that injury or suspension to two or three key players would be very difficult to cover.

"Because our turnover is flat, the reduction in the salary cap from 60% to 55% will mean about £80,000 difference to us, or about two players at League 2 wages. So that puts the management team under pressure.

"We have assumed, with ongoing progress, that there will be an increase again to 2,700 in the average (gate) this time.

"I am optimistic but realistic and within these constraints, a midtable finish would be a success as we build for the future."

Manager Pitman also noted the financial restraint in his HT column.

"We have a number of players who do not fit into what I am trying to do. They are taking a proportion of our budget and do not figure in my plans and so it is frustrating that we are not able to freshen things up and do what we want to do."

Meanwhile the HT has put out a headline saying that midfielder Harry Pell fainted at this morning's club photocall. However they note that he was soon back on his feet and is expected to be in the squad that will leave for Southend tomorrow afternoon.

Later he was given the all clear by the club doctor.

News Round-Up

Mansfield walked out of their friendly with Ilkeston last night after having three players severely injured by the same Ilkeston man. Striker Gary Ricketts, who played against the Bulls for Hucknall in the FA Trophy, was blamed for leaving defenders John Thomson, Richie Sutton, and Martin Riley in A&E for a variety of challenges that left Thomson and Riley requiring stitches and Sutton with a suspected dislocated shoulder. Manager Paul Cox pulled his side out after a 68th minute challenge saw Thomson barged into the dugout with blood pouring from his face.

Morecambe have applied for permission to hold concerts at their new Globe Arena home. However enviromental health officers have objected after complaints about noise from neighbours to the new ground, including complaints of noise on matchdays. Cheltenham have loaned youngster Kyle Haynes to Salisbury for three months. The 19 year old made just one senior appearance for the Robins last term.

Aldershot have named former Bull Darren Jones as their new Club Captain. Plymouth are expected to sign striker Warren Feeney later today after he agreed to a termination to his deal with Oldham yesterday. The 30 year old was due to agree a season long loan to Home Park before the settlement. Port Vale are claimed to have told the local press they would offer cut-price tickets to their match with Crawley this weekend if fans abandonded their planned protest against the board.

Season Preview - Part Four

Rotherham - Last season 9th - Bookies 20/1 7th - Boss Andy Scott has been particularly ruthless in the summer transfer dealings, dispensing with strikers Ian Thomas-Moore and Tom Pope with blunt words. Chris Holroyd comes in to partner Adam Le Fondre after Ryan Taylor's departure to the Championship, and it will be Le Fondre's long term future that probably will place the Millers in the top three or just as a play-off side. The in-demand frontman seems destined to leave before the transfer window closes, and his departure could be costly.

Shrewsbury - Last season 4th - Bookies 14/1 4th= - It's never usually Graham Turner's style to be picking up players from Aldershot and Accrington, but that has been the vast majority of his summer dealings. Offloading strikers Matt Harrold and Jake Robinson for Marvin Morgan and Terry Gornell might prove to be a mistake when the numbers are added up at the end of the season. Morgan hasn't scored since October, while the incoming pair scored eight less in total than the departing duo. The Shrews should be there abouts come the end of the season, but another play-off campaign beckons.

Southend - Last season 13th - Bookies 28/1 9th= - Despite losing £1million a season, the club are 'on budget' with their squad of 29. The 'Sainsbury Shrimpers' continue to be propped up by the supermarket chain as the Roots Hall development rumbles on. Any serious thought of promotion will probably be held up until that dream is realised, leaving fans to hope for a run into the play-offs. Paul Sturrock's ability to raise a passable team from scratch in a couple of weeks last summer will give them hope that he has been able to refine the squad sufficiently for improvement.

Swindon - Last season L1 24th (R) - Bookies 10/1 2nd - This season will either be a relentless march to triumph or a massive disaster for the Robins. The appointment of Paolo Di Canio looks, on the basis of his signings, to be leaning towards the latter. A mixture of journeymen from various semi-pro lower leagues in Europe doesn't look like promotion material, and their pre-season campaign featuring games against four part-time sides and a loss to Reading has done little to suggest they will be a force even though confidence is high at the club. Maybe Di Canio believes bravado is sufficient to win this division. We shall see, after all it was Graham Westley that coined the phrase 'Attitude is more important than ability'.

Torquay - Last season 7th - Bookies 40/1 14th= - The beaten play-off finalists has seen a large chunk of their squad, and their managerial team, depart over the summer leaving them to be cast as also-rans again. New manager Martin Ling has a track record of avoiding disaster and that is likely to be his target this season. In Rene Howe and Chris McPhee, Ling has two forwards with decent Conference records but the pair have struggled previously in the League and don't look a patch on the Chris Zebroski/Jake Robinson pairing they will replace.

Wimbledon - Last season Conf 2nd(P) - Bookies 33/1 13th - Having earned League status only nine seasons after forming is no mean feat, but the 'new' Wimbledon feel they have somewhat overachieved to get this far this quickly. A season of consolidation is likely, with their compact Kingsmeadow home likely to restrict future growth until their ultimate dream of a return to Merton can be achieved. The player-enforced sales of Danny Kedwell and Steve Gregory will hurt, with both replaced by players confident in the Conference. The whole squad is light on League experience but should step up and hold their own under their experienced manager.

Bulls Available At 80/1

The Bulls are now available at 80/1 after one bookmaker increased their odds on every League Two side.

William Hill now have the best odds on any team in the division, at the time of writing, pushing the Bulls from 66/1 to 80/1 alongside Barnet and Morecambe. Burton are now a 100/1 shot, with Macclesfield still 125/1, and Cheltenham out to 150/1. Crewe and Accrington are also pushed out to 50/1.

At the top of the list, Crawley are now at 10/3 with most bookies offering less than 3/1.

For promotion, the Bulls are generally available at 14/1, with relegation at 11/2. Victor Chandler also offer odds on the Bulls to stay up, but it's a hardly generous 1/7. Every side in their list is odds-on.

In the Top Goalscorer lists, Yoann Arquin joins Stuart Fleetwood in being offered at 40/1. Sean Canham is also listed, as a 100/1 shot alongside Delroy Facey.

Shrimpers Lose Another Million

Southend have posted another loss of over £1million in their latest accounts, according to reports.

The figures, for the 09/10 season, push their total debt close to the £9million mark. The accountants warned supporters, in their notes on the accounts, that there was 'a material uncerntainty which may cast doubt on the company's ability to continue as a going concern' although the club's Finance Director 'remains confident'.

The news comes on the day the Shrimpers admitted that they have had more winding up proceedings brought against them by the taxman. The club say they were a day late with a £65,000 payment and are now being asked to pay a late payment penalty of £11,000. The matter is likely to be resolved in court with the club disputing the facts of the matter.

Meanwhile, yesterday's BBC survey into the 'Price of Football' has come in for more criticism. Leyton Orient have defended their policy after being classed as one of the more expensive League One sides.

They claim other sides submitted prices for Johnstones Paint Trophy games rather than League matches, while the 200% site has investigated the figures in-depth and found none of the 11 clubs claimed to be under £20 for a matchday experience actually offered that figure for League games. They did find, however, that Macclesfield's figures had altered and they were now under the £20 mark.

Season Preview - Part Three

Macclesfield Town - Last season 15th - Bookies 125/1 23rd - Gary Simpson mocked last season's relegation tag by quietly easing his bargain-basement side into a safe mid-table place. The Moss Rose outfit are never expected to be in the promotion frame, and the bookies expect - again - for the Silkmen to be relegated. Simpson is likely to prove them wrong again unless they pick up a serious injury crisis.

Morecambe - Last season 20th - Bookies 80/1 20th= - Rookie boss Jim Bentley goes into the unknown after Sammy McIlroy's departure, with the bookies expecting him to repeat his former chief's finish from last term. While never seriously in trouble the Shrimps weren't safe until the final week. Bentley hasn't made much improvement to the squad, and any hopes of staying clear of danger will probably rely on striker Phil Jevons retaining his fitness throughout the season and forming a partnership with new arrival Lewis Alessandra.

Northampton Town - Last season 16th - Bookies 20/1 7th= - Chairman Dennis Cardoza believes Gary Johnson's squad will be promoted, despite the former Yeovil boss having a fairly awful record with the Cobblers last term. Heavy spending has seen the prolific Jake Robinson paired with the gigantic Adebayo Akinfenwa up front. If they can fire from the start they should be in contention, but they are likely to be looking at the play-offs at best.

Oxford United - Last season 12th - Bookies 12/1 4th - A steady stream of people appear to have been walking up to the bookmakers to back Chris Wilder's men. They opened at 25/1 and are now fourth favourites after a string of notable summer signings. Michael Duberry and Tony Capaldi add experience at the back, while if Jon-Paul Pittman can hit it off with the dangerous James Constable there should be goals aplenty to push the U's right into contention.

Plymouth Argyle - Last season L1 23rd(R) - Bookies 25/1 10th= - Pilgrims fans were, not so long ago, eyeing the Premier League. Now they're in the basement for the first time since they romped to the title with 102 points ten years ago. They still don't quite know whether they'll start the season in Administration and boss Peter Reid is yet to fully assemble a squad. A season of consolidation, rebuilding off the field, would probably be nice. But there is always that sinking feeling that the latest crisis club may slide right out the League like Stockport did.

Port Vale - Last season 11th - Bookies 25/1 10th= - With the fans still in open revolt against the boardroom, Micky Adams has struggled to keep his players focused on earning promotion. His low-key transfer dealings may be related to the 'starve em out' campaign to restrict club income and force the board to depart, and is likely to mean another disappointing season for Valiants fans on the pitch.

Wrexham Edge Towards Security

Wrexham have edged closer to resolving their future after the local Glyndwr University bought the Racecourse Ground.

The university have also purchased the club's Colliers Park training ground, and are set to agree a lengthy lease with the club when the Supporters Trust seal their deal to buy the club.

While there are unsubstantiated claims that the club will be sold this week, the Trust say it will take two weeks to call an EGM to even have a vote according to their constitution. Staff and players at the club are likely to be asked to agree to a deferrment of their wages ahead of a deal being done, or the club may be forced into Administration before the deal is done.

Supporters have already raised £15,000 over the past week to help towards the outstanding wage bill, and the players are back in training ahead of the new season.

Shrimpers Set To Push Defender Up

Defender Bilel Moshni is set to play up front for Southend when the Bulls visit on Saturday.

Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock has little choice with only Neil Harris fully fit of the four strikers he chooses to have at his disposal. With Matt Patterson frozen out of Roots Hall, both Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock are injured while Liam Dickinson is nowhere near match fitness. Sturrock said of the former Stockport man, after his 60 minute appearance against Canvey Island at the weekend: “I think that was the first game Liam has had in three months and it showed he wasn't fit.”

Moshni, a 6ft 3in central defender, crashed headers off the crossbar while playing upfront alongside veteran Neil Harris in games against Norwich and Ipswich in pre-season, and scored three times in four matches while pressed into emergency attacking duties last season. But the French-Tunisian admitted he has a temper problem that saw him sent off twice last season, telling the Echo:

“The manager has spoken to me about this but when players are stupid it's hard for me to stay calm. If you're better than me and you win every header and tackle against me then fair play. But there's no need to try and injure me to make it happen. That's what annoys me and it seems that every team has this one stupid player. That gets to me but I know I have to stay calm because teams will start to target me.”

Sturrock is unlikely to make further signings before the weekend after admitting his 29 man squad needed to be trimmed down this week.

News Round-Up

Northampton have signed former Crewe defender Ashley Westwood on non-contract terms. The veteran defender is on an extended trial after his short term deal at Gresty Road expired. Cobblers' player-coach Andy Holt will miss the start of the season after dislocating his shoulder. Cheltenham may have to scrap their Centre of Excellence at the end of this season after the club decided to channel some of it's funds into the first team instead.

Bad news for food lovers in that Gillingham have signed a seven year deal with Lindley Catering to handle all the food outlets at Priestfield. Club chairman Paul Scally obviously didn't look very hard for references, telling the press: "We have contacts throughout the footballing world, and those using Lindley's services all spoke highly of them." Plymouth are in talks with former Barnet and Darlington striker Tresor Kandol, who has been playing in the Spanish second tier recently.

Port Vale are in a war of words with Nantwich Town over an unpaid bill for use of the non-leaguers 3G pitches during last winter. The Valiants have failed to pay the £1,200 bill, saying they were to play a friendly at the club to pay for the cost. Nantwich say the friendly was part of the fee for their former player Ritchie Sutton and had nothing to do with the 3G bill. The friendly was cancelled during the row, costing Nantwich £6,000.

Season Preview - Part Two

Cheltenham Town - Last season 17th - Bookies 149/1 24th - Mark Yates will probably want to forget the bulk of 2011 so far. His underperforming side just about kept themselves out of danger, but his bargain basement trawling this summer has not turned heads and a largely disasterous pre-season, culminating in a 4-2 loss to Glenn Hoddle's Academy side, has seen even the most die-hard Robins fan wondering how much longer they can remain a League side.

Crawley Town - Last Season Conf 1st(P) - Bookies 3/1 1st - If the bookies are correct, then we might as well pack up and go home now. The Red Devils are expected to have an unrelenting march towards League One this season, and have received almost unrelenting backing since opening at 5/1. Their only defeat in 2011, in 30 games, was at Old Trafford against Man Utd in the FA Cup. Over the summer they've casually waved their chequebook of debatable origins at a string of high profile signings, and they seem more likely to be derailed by off-field matters than on-field ones.

Crewe Alexandra - Last season 10th - Bookies 40/1 16th= - Dario Gradi's policy of blooding youth players is likely to take even more focus this season with finances tight at Gresty Road. The veteran boss has even hinted at using a squad rotation system to give the youngsters some time off. With a trio of England u17 internationals in their arsenal scouts are likely to be filling the stands to cherry pick the wares on offer, but the reliance on largely untested kids is likely to mean an indifferent season for the Railwaymen.

Dagenham and Redbridge - Last season L1 21st(R) - Bookies 33/1 13th= - A surprise promotion was, less surprisingly, followed by an immediate drop back to League Two. John Still has seen some of his prize assets, including the vast majority of his goalscorers, depart over the summer and he will have to largely start from scratch with his forward line. Half a dozen more unknowns from non-league have entered the stadium gates, and if Still's record of converting them into decent players keeps up he should find enough to keep the Daggers somewhere close to the play-offs.

Gillingham - Last season 8th - Bookies 16/1 6th - Andy Hessenthaler is another manager with an ultimatium. It's promotion or bust at Priestfield, with chairman Paul Scally demanding League One football next season. He's backed his manager in the transfer market, but the injury to Adam Birchall that will see him miss the rest of 2011 at least is likely to put a large dent in the plans. Those plans were already hinging on Birchall and Danny Kedwell taking their prolific non-league records into League Two. The failure of Kedwell in the absence of Birchall will likely cost Hessenthaler his job.

Hereford United - Last season 21st - Bookies 66/1 19th - If Jamie Pitman's record in charge was stretched across last season, the Bulls would have been within touching distance of the play-offs. The January sale of Mathieu Manset threatened to derail the escape from the drop zone, but Stuart Fleetwood now gets Delroy Facey to feed off after often working solo last term. Good team spirit is evident at Edgar Street, but it's now down to the young manager to make an undoubtedly talented side a success on the pitch.

Southend United v Hereford United
Football League 2
Saturday 6th August 2011 KO 3.00 pm
Roots Hall
Victoria Avenue
Southend-on-Sea
SS2 6NQ

The Bulls kick off the new season with a visit to Southend's Roots Hall on Saturday.

Whilst The Club have received full planning for a new stadium at Fossetts Farm near the present training ground, the next season or perhaps two will be at Roots Hall where visiting fans are accommodated in the North Stand which is an all-seated former home terrace.  There are some supporting pillars but with a capacity of around 2000, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a seat with a good view.

Admission: Prices are for matchday with advance tickets prices in brackets.  Adults £21 (£19), Seniors £15 (£14), Students £14 (£13), Young person (17-20) ID required (not available on matchday), Juniors (9-16) £10 (£9) and U8’s £5 (£4).  Advance tickets will be available from HUFC offices until Thursday 4th August.

Coaches: HUISA departs Legends at 8.00 am with a fare of £25 (members £23).   Places can be booked through the office 08442 761939.

By car, travel to Gloucester and then follow signs for A417 (Cirencester).  At the top of Birdlip (Air Balloon) take the A436 then the A40 towards Oxford.  Continue through Oxford following signs for M40 (London) and join the M40.  Join the M25 (clockwise) following signs for Watford.  Continue on the M25 to junction 29 where you should join the A127 (sign Southend).  The remaining 20 miles may well take up to 45 minutes! When you reach a roundabout near the Tesco/Strawberry Fields Pub/Travel Inn, take the third exit (sign Central Southend).  At the next set of traffic lights continue on past The Bell Hotel to the next roundabout. Take the 3rd exit (Victoria Avenue) and continue down the hill to a set of lights.  You should be able to see Roots Hall at this stage.  Turn right at the lights into Fairfax Drive for the away entrance.  There is limited parking at the ground (£5?) otherwise spaces can be found in the surrounding streets.  Distance is around 190 miles and you should allow at least 4.5 hours due to traffic.  Postcode SS2 6NQ.

Trains from London run from Liverpool Street roughly three to the hour and return after the game every 30 minutes from Prittlewell Station.

ALEHOUSES - On our visit last March, the nearby Spread Eagle was found to be "home only" whereas the other traditional Roots Hall boozer, The Blue Boar, was closed and boarded up.  The Nelson in North Road may be worth a look as it has Sky and a beer garden while The Railway Tavern at 108 East Street was fairly welcoming in March.  A mile from the ground on London Road is The Trading Room, a converted Bank that reportedly serves Courage Directors and Ridleys' Old Bob along with decent food.  The delightful "Golden Mile" seafront offers a multitude of premises including The Liberty Belle, which does a Real Ale or two although nothing of particular note.  Close to the Pier, you will find a gynormous Wetherspoons trading as The Last Post.  It offers the usual fare including Spitfire, Directors and Theakstons Best as well as several guests and TWO CIDERS (probably fizzy).  Finally, if you can find it, The Railway Hotel at 32 Clifftown Road is one of the few "proper" pubs in Saaarfend.  Cheddar Valley cider and Weston’s Perry plus an interesting range of beers along with pleasant surroundings make it worth the search to find it.  Please note, The Shrimpers Bar at the ground is now members only and no alcohol is served inside the stadium although refreshments are available from a café type building behind the North Stand.  There is a chip shop opposite the Blue Boar by the traffic lights.

Enjoy.

Berry to Referee at Southend

Carl Berry from Surrey is set to take charge of Saturday's game between Southend and Hereford United.

The game will be only the second Berry has refereed at League Two level. His first was a match at Aldershot last March.

Ex-Bull Price Signs For Barnet

Former Bulls loanee Jason Price has signed a one month deal at Barnet.

The 34 year old, a free agent after leaving Carlisle earlier in the summer, has played in two trial games for the Bees. Also joining the Underhill outfit on a short term deal is full back Ryan Watts. The Harrow defender has missed their last two games and is being given the chance to earn a longer deal.

Signing a longer term deal with the Bees is keeper Dean Brill. The 25 year old former Oldham man has signed a one year deal with Lawrie Sanchez's men and will be their no.1 keeper for the start of the season.

Season Preview - Part One

Accrington Stanley - Last season 5th - Bookies 40/1 16th= - Despite their play-off qualification last season, the usual relegation candidates are expected to finish only in a lower mid-table spot by the bookies after losing a large chunk of their squad to the vultures. Boss John Coleman will hope the recent financial woes are behind the club, but he'll be some kind of magician to make the play-offs again.

Aldershot Town - Last season 14th - Bookies 40/1 16th= - Dean Holdsworth's rebuilding of the Shots squad has caused few ripples around League Two, adding more players with a non-league pedigree rather than experienced League heads. Financial constraints at the Rec are likely to dictate Holdsworth's dealings, with their chairman currently shoring up the finances, and another indifferent season is likely without sudden improvement.

Barnet - Last season 22nd - Bookies 80/1 20th= - Lawrie Sanchez's men are still clutching that get out of jail free card that aided their late escape from relegation. The retention of striker Izale McLeod is the key piece to any aspirations the Bees may have, but little else has changed and only McLeod's long term availability for the Bees will keep them clear of the bottom two.

Bradford City - Last season 18th - Bookies 25/1 10th= - From talks of Administration in May to making six-figure offers for players in July, the oddity that is Bradford rumbles on in League Two. Still the biggest side in the division and still inexplicably in business despite being woefully underfunded, their decision to introduce a 'development squad' is the sign of a longer term plan rather than any serious promotion aspirations this season.

Bristol Rovers - Last season L1 22nd(R) - Bookies 11/1 2nd= - Paul Buckle will be expected to return the Pirates to League One at the earliest opportunity, and the board have backed the former Torquay man with 14 signings so far. With a string of decent signings that should be capable of making a mark this season, Buckle's only problem will be to get the bunch of random strangers to gel together quickly.

Burton Albion - Last season 19th - Bookies 99/1 22nd - Paul Peschisolido would have probably seen his side relegated but for their creditable form in the opening three months of last season. The spectacular dive down the table after racking up a slew of games in hand turned into a serious panic late on. The sale of striker Shaun Harrad in January was partly responsible, and the signings of duo Calvin Zola and Justin Richards suggest that the Brewers' front line will go for a battering ram approach this season.

News Round-Up

Plymouth will name David Jones as their new Chief Executive when they emerge from Administration. He spent 13 years with Southampton as Finance Director during which they dropped into Administration. The Pilgrims have also added Shaun Reid, brother of manager Peter, to their coaching staff. Rotherham have confirmed receiving contact from Coventry about striker Adam Le Fondre.

Morecambe have signed defender Nick Fenton on a two year deal. The 31 year old was released by Rotherham earlier in the summer. The Shrimps have also signed keeper Shaun Routledge on a one year deal. The former Oldham youngster is yet to make a senior appearance. Port Vale are trialling striker Mark McCammon. The 32 year old made just one start for Gillingham last season.

Macclesfield winger Colin Daniel will miss the opening month of the season as he is to undergo surgery on a hernia problem. The 23 year old has been a regular for the Silkmen since arriving at the club two years ago. Plymouth have signed teenage Middlesboro defender Ben Gibson on loan for three months. The England u18 man has made one appearance for the Championship side's first team.

Wrexham's Supporters Trust have urged fans to keep calm and to refrain from 'illegal and harassing' acts against the club's owners. They want to raise £300,000 to assist their takeover of the club and cover short-term losses. Cheltenham have arranged a friendly with Glenn Hoddle's Academy side for tonight after seeing their match with West Brom scrapped.

New Port Vale signing Tom Pope says he has taken 'a massive drop in wages' to sign for his boyhood heroes. Reports say that Morecambe and Mansfield both offered the striker better deals. Forest Green have signed trialist midfielder James Rowe, who scored against the Bulls at the weekend, to a two year deal. The 19 year old was previously in Reading's youth setup.

Burton have signed former Leicester trainee Adi Yussuf on a one year deal. The 18 year old scored twice in ten games on loan with Tamworth earlier in the year.

Very Good for Sixty Minutes

Hereford United manager Jamie Pitman thought his side were very good for sixty minutes in last night's friendly against Bolton.

"We competed well," Pitman told Richard Prime. "But then their quality shone through.

"We showed some great quality. The lads have done exactly what we asked them to do."

Pitman thanked Bolton for coming to play the friendly.

"I hope they appreciated that the pitch was in good condition and I hope they got something out of it."

Pitman put on his number eight shirt and came on as a sub for the last ten minutes.

"I enjoyed it but it gets very difficult when you get to our age to compete.

"I'm glad I got the chance and glad I touched the ball a couple of times.

"It was a great occassion and I thank everybody for turning up."

Looking forward to this coming season Pitman was cautious.

"It's going to be a tough one. It's another transition year for us. We've still got a lot to make up and a lot of hard work ahead of us."

League Two 'Price of Football'

BBC Sport have surveyed all football clubs in League Two and Hereford United comes out as the seventh cheapest ground to watch a game.

The survey took into account the ticket price, the programme, the cost of a pie and a cup of coffee. In all the total came to £20.50.

Rotherham came out as the cheapest at £16.30. However the survey doesn't take into account that the view at the Don Valley stadium is poor given there is an athletic track around the pitch.

Torquay came out as the second cheapest at £16.50.

There are a number of points to take into account when looking at the results of the survey. Prices for tickets are the cheapest at the ground and are seldom available to away supporters.

Secondly it's uncertain how up to date the survey is. For example a cup of tea at Edgar Street is said to cost 80 pence. However it's more like £1.50 these days.

Finally the quality of pies is not taken into account. It's probably fair to say that the best pies in League Two can be purchased at Edgar Street.

UPDATE: It appears that much of the information in the survey seems to have relied on clubs filling out a form rather than any actual investigation.

For example the £10 ticket at Rotherham only applies to Carling Cup matches.

It may be that if the price of a League match is taken into account then Hereford United would be one of if not the cheapest venues to watch football in League Two.

Standing Ovation for Pitman

Both sets of supporters gave Bulls manager Jamie Pitman a standing ovation before the start of this evening's pre-season friendly with Bolton.

The game had been labelled as a testimonial match for Pitman but he generously gave part of the proceeds to the Adam Stansfield Foundation.

Stansfield and Pitman played for the Bulls in the 04/05 and 05/06 seasons.

Amidst the mascots this evening were Pitman's two young children.

Meanwhile Bolton manager Owen Coyle had a chance to catch up his 'close friend and former Wanderers player Richard Sneekes' who is now coach at Edgar Street.

Bolton too strong for Bulls

Jamie Pitman's benefit match saw Bolton Wanderers run out 3-0 winners against Hereford United at Edgar Street. Chris Eagles powerbolt of a free-kick slipped past Adam Bartlett's grasp, before Darren Pratley curled in a controversial second. Kevin Davies rounded off the victory with a deft finish, in front of an encouraging 2,250 supporters, which included 184 in the away end.

United were boosted by the timely return of Stefan Stam to the defence, but trialist Albert Jarrett wasn't amongst the squad, hinting that a deal is all but dead for the winger. The visitors named a strong eleven, including England international Gary Cahill.

The Bulls started the game well, chasing down the ball at every opportunity, and generally looking more interested than in recent games.
The opener came 15 minutes in after Ryan Green was penalised for a foul on K. Davies; the set-piece was shifted right to Eagles, who powerfully struck past Bartlett (click on pic to enlarge), although the 'keeper will have felt he may have done better. Soon after, Mark Davies showed good feet inside the box, forcing Bartlett to push the ball around the post.

At the other end, a well-worked throw in move involving a flick by Stuart Fleetwood into the path of James McQuilkin allowed the midfielder an opportunity to fire goalwards, but his powerful effort was well blocked. Hereford should have been level when a fine move was wasted by Fleetwood. Green's measured through ball split the Wanderers back-line, allowing Joe Colbeck to race in behind the back-line, and his pull across found Fleetwood unmarked, but a left-foot shot went back across goal, when it looked easier to score. Eagles nearly added to his earlier strike, when Bartlett failed to hold on to a Martin Petrov cross but the former Manchester United youngster screwed his shot past the post.

Early in the second-half, a slip by the otherwise impressive Stam allowed K. Davies in but he couldn't find a finish to beat Bartlett. Eagles then went onto sting the palms of Bartlett with a ferecious long-range effort, whilst moments later, Harry Pell was caught in possession by Fabrice Muama allowing the England Under 21 international to break at speed. Muamba eventually slipped in Petrov, with the Bulgarian poking the ball goalwards but he was denied by a hand from Bartlett, and a clearance by Joe Heath.

Wanderers wrapped up victory with two quick-fire strikes. Paul Robinson sent a through ball into the path of Pratley, who made no mistake with a precise finish. The home supporters were frustrated as Pratley, although onside from the Robinson pass, looked offside when K. Davies appeared to get a slight touch to the ball. The veteran, who was recently capped for England, got his name on the score-sheet, when Petrov's deft pass split the Bulls' back-line and Davies dinked the ball over the outrushing Bartlett.

Hereford rallied for the final ten or so minutes, with the introduction of Yoann Arquin providing fresh impetus to the forward line. The Frenchman's head down set up Colbeck, who saw a 20 yard left-foot drive held by Rob Lainton. Arquin was again involved, bouncing off two challenges to drive into the box with the ball, before picking out McQuilkin, with the former West Brom trainee's strike deflected out for a corner. Pitman's cameo appearence was met with a huge cheer by the home support, and the manager showed some decent touches, setting up a chance for McQuilkin, who dummied before curling past the far post with his left-foot.

Despite the scoreline, Hereford will be pleased with their workout this evening ahead of Saturday's opener at Southend. There was more bite and desire on the field than in recent friendlies, and the fans seemed to appreciate this come the end of the encounter. Bolton played a patient game, and kept possession, whilst looking lively coming forward, as is expected with a Premiership team. With five days to go to Roots Hall, Pitman will be working hard to potentially add a new face to his team, before deciding which eleven players have done enough to warrant a starting place.

Hereford: Bartlett; Purdie, Stam, Green, Heath; Colbeck, Lunt, McQuilkin, Pell, Fleetwood; Facey.

Subs: Hoult, Townsend (for Stam), Arquin (for Facey), Kovacs, Weir, Williams (for Colbeck), Pitman (for Lunt).

Bolton: Lainton, Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson, Eagles, Reo Coker, Muamba, Petrov, K Davies, M Davies.

Subs: Jaaskelainen, Mears (for Steinsson), Klasnic, Pratley (for Reo Coker), Wheater (for Knight), Blake (for Petrov)

Bulls Don Their Game Faces

The Bulls lost tonight's game with Bolton 3-0 but were a transformed team from that on display over the past week.

The tackles were flying, commitment redoubled, and invention aplenty with the side clearly more focused on the upcoming task. The Bulls side did not include trialist Albert Jarrett, with only Danny Williams and some blonde kid called Pitman the uncontracted players on show, while Stefan Stam made a welcome return to the starting XI.

Bulls Travel In Numbers

Based on the percentage of the home attendance that travelled away last season, the Bulls were the 15th best supported club in the Football League.

10.6% of the Bulls home support travelled to away matches, above the national average of 8.9%, with the Football League reporting that the Bulls averaged 231 travellers to each match. Port Vale topped the list of League Two travellers with an average of 886, while Morecambe were bottom of the pile with just 123 following the Shrimps away.

The Bulls reported to the FL that on average 327 away fans travelled to Edgar Street for each game last season. Torquay was, somewhat surprisingly, the least attractive L2 venue with just 117 opting to visit Plainmoor. Most popular destination in L2 was Chesterfield, with 601 visiting their new stadium.

The Bulls recorded a highest away tally on the opening day at Crewe, with 905 visiting Gresty Road. That number was enough to beat twelve other sides best figures, including four League One teams.

The FL stats can be seen here.

Townsend to miss Carling Cup-tie

As well as missing Hereford United's first League Two game of the season at Southend on Saturday, defender Michael Townsend will also have to sit out next Tuesday's Carling Cup-tie against Brentford at Edgar Street.

Townsend was sent off at Macclesfield during the last game of last season.

An unfortunate clash involving Townsend and Matty Hamshaw saw the latter tumble in the box and the referee point to the spot. Townsend, perhaps a little unluckily, was given his marching orders before Chalmers stepped up to fire home despite Bartlett getting a hand to the shot.

Last Saturday at Forest Green, Kenny Lunt was captain until Townsend came on as a sub.

Featherstone Gets Good Scan News

Nicky Featherstone has told his twitter followers that the scan on his injured foot has shown no bone damage.

The injury has kept him out for most of pre-season, but he told his followers that the scan found only bruising to the bone and some tendonitis. The former Hull man will now have an injection into his foot that should cure the problem, but he is still expected to miss a few weeks as he gets back to full fitness.

Rose Joins The Daggers

Dagenham have signed released Bulls utility man Richard Rose.

Rose, 28, spent five years at Edgar Street but was released in the summer with Jamie Pitman telling the press he would consider re-hiring the former Gillingham man if he had the budget left.

Also joining the Daggers today are former Southend and Gillingham midfielder Kevin Maher, former Bulls trialist forward Sam Williams, and released Lincoln midfielder Luke Howell.
