Burton Boss Up For Curse

Burton manager Gary Rowett is among the nominees for the League Two Manager of the Month award.

The Brewers won four of five matches in October, with the prize winner being named on Friday. Rowett's side lost 1-0 to Morecambe at home on Saturday, with Brewers fans taking to the local paper's website to complain about being bullied out of a game yet again.

Midfielder Robbie Weir told the local press that his side hadn't worked out why they were struggling at home: “The home record hasn’t been the best, we haven’t had the rub of the green here. Away from home, teams give us more space but we struggle at home.

“Teams are doing a lot more work on us when they come to the Pirelli. We can’t put our finger on it.”

Rowett said that the Shrimps stifled their play: “It’s very difficult to pass through them with the way they play. They had Stewart Drummond sitting in there, an extra man in midfield and it was always going to be difficult to pass it around them or through them."

The Brewers lost four home games in the entirety of last season, a figure already matched this term, with Rowett adding that they had to 'bludgeon' their way back into games at times:

“The times we’ve come back into games at home and got points it’s when we’ve kind of bludgeoned it a little bit rather than crafting it in the way we would want.

“I don’t think we can put a finger on it."

Burr Stays With Kiddy

Kidderminster Harriers have confirmed that manager Steve Burr is to remain with the club.

Burr had talks with Forest Green about their vacant managerial position but is now back at Aggborough.

Armed Forces Day At Edgar Street Next Tues

With the previously planned Saturday home match postponed due to the FA Cup, the Bulls have announced that the game with Chester next Tuesday will be an Armed Forces Day.

The club will grant free admission to any members of the armed forces that turn up to the game in uniform, or show their forces ID card, while the Royal British Legion and local Cadets groups will be holding a charity collection at the match.

News Round-Up

Former Bulls loanee Joe Anyinsah spent Sunday in hospital having tests after passing blood following a heavy collision during the Dragons' loss to Macclesfield on Saturday. Barrow have axed manager Dave Bayliss after a disappointing start to the season. The Conf North side, relegated in the summer, are 18th in the table and just goal difference away from the drop zone.

Nuneaton are in negotiations with Nottm Forest to extend the loan of goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov. The Bulgarian u21 man has only made four appearances so far due to injury and rotation with the club's other keeper James Belshaw. No Bulls have been named in the England C side to face the Czech Republic in Woking in two weeks. The 18 man squad includes three Salisbury players, and two each from Cambridge, Nuneaton, Alfreton, and Kidderminster.

Chester have announced a stadium sponsorship deal with a local car dealer. The two year deal has an option for a third year. The reformed Scarborough side is set to return to the town after two years of exile after the local council unveiled plans to build a new stadium. The 'sports village' will see a stadium built along with an Olympic sized swimming pool and other facilities, with the council-owned former McCain Stadium site sold for development to help fund the project.

Government Responds To Petition About Funding Of Grassroot Football

Recently an e-petition was launched which called for the Government to force the Premier League to put more money towards Grassroot Football which would help clubs such as Hereford United.

As over 10,000 had signed the petition the Government has released the following statement.

The Government works closely with the football authorities to ensure that the grassroots benefits from a proportion of the broadcast rights revenue generated by the Premier League and any commercial surplus made by the FA. The Premier League makes a significant voluntary contribution to grassroots football that has continued to grow since the League’s inception. Over the next three seasons the League will redistribute over £850 million pounds to help strengthen football below the top tier. This includes solidarity payments to support the 72 clubs in the Football League and the 68 clubs in the three divisions of the Football Conference. Part of this funding is ring-fenced to support these clubs’ work in the community. £168 million will be spent by the Premier League solely on grassroots football and community sport projects over the next three years. The Premier League has recently formed a strong partnership with Sport England to increase its work in this area. This includes the expansion of the Premier League 4 Sport programme that encourages more young people to take up sport and is helping deliver a tangible sporting legacy from London 2012. The £168 million is on top of direct investment from clubs themselves on community sport projects. The recently launched Premier League and the FA Facilities fund will build and upgrade community football facilities in some of the most deprived areas of the country over the next three years. This will build on the success of the Football Foundation - funded by the Premier League, the FA and Government - that has delivered £780 million worth of investment in grassroots facilities in the last ten years. On top of the Premier League investment, the FA returns any surplus from commercial rights into the game and invested £43 million into grassroots football in 2012. This e-petition remains open to signatures and will be considered for debate by the Backbench Business Committee should it pass the 100 000 signature threshold.

From The Archives - Bulls React To Cup Defeat

Thirteen years ago today the Bulls travelled to Scarborough for a Conference match and came away with a deserved victory. They needed to win after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Woking the previous Saturday.

November 4th 2000

SCARBOROUGH 2 - 4 HEREFORD UNITED

After the disappointment of defeat last week, Hereford reacted in the best way possible - by winning away at Scarborough. The Yorkshire side were also eliminated against Leigh RMI last Saturday, but couldn't break down Hereford as they took the game to their hosts. With the fixture in doubt due to flooding and a possible waterlogged pitch, it was announced on the morning of the game that it would go ahead, and the United team will be glad that it did!

The Bulls made one change to the side that were defeated at Woking, with Kerry Giddings replaced by Gavin Williams, who was sorely missed through suspension last Saturday. Scarborough announced the sale of Chris Tate on Friday to Leyton Orient to help solve their crippling debts, and named former Hereford man Gareth Stoker in midfield. Their whole squad is now for sale to raise vital funds as they are £2 million in the red. Scarborough have just entered into a CVA, the same type of arrangement that kept Hereford United alive just two years ago.

From the off, both sides went on the attack and both looked up for the game. The pitch looked in fairly good condition considering the amount of rain in the past ten days and the game was easily playable.

The opening goal came on four minutes, when a Gavin Williams run was knocked back to Rodgerson, who then delivered a superb cross for Robin Elmes to head home from ten yards. Defenders Romain Faure and Denny Ingram were at fault when they failed to clear from Rodgerson.

Scarborough though came back and forced Cooksey into action on several occasions, but he saved well from Stoker, Pounder and Brodie. The most impressive save, though, came from a Diallo effort. The striker hit a shot destined for goal from just four yards, but somehow Cooksey tipped it behind. The deservedly equalised, however, came on seventeen minutes when Sherif Diallo was left with space galore, and beat Cooksey easily from six yards after good work from Stoker and Pounder.

Just seven minutes later, United regained the lead through Gavin Williams. A good ball from Ian Wright was met by Williams as the Scarborough defence had attempted to play him offside. From an acute angle he beat the advancing goalkeeper. The home sides defence had continually attempted to play the Bulls offside, but this time it didn't quite go according to plan!

Scarborough searched for an equaliser but Scott Cooksey was on top form to keep out attempts from Simon Betts, Steve Brodie and Sherif Diallo. Two minutes before the break, however, an Ellender long ball was met by Betts, who headed down to Pounder. The striker then drove into the right hand corner to level the scores at the break.

After the interval, both sides looked likely to score with Scarborough having the best of the early chances. Striker David Pounder created two good efforts before Hereford regained the lead, the best coming from the edge of the box which Cooksey somehow saved.

Sixteen minutes into the half, United took the advantage when a long ball from Tony James allowed Gavin Williams to make a fourty yard run before receiving the ball and hitting it low into the bottom corner. On his run, he passed two defenders and was unmarked, revealing the torrid time the Scarborough defence were having. Goalkeeper Andrew Wood came out towards Williams, but the Welshman knocked the ball past Wood to give Hereford the lead for the third time.

The game was sealed just four minutes later when a sublime pass from Ian Rodgerson was brought down by McIndoe to hit a superb, left-footed low ball past the goalkeeper in front of just 891, one of the lowest league crowds of the season at the McCain stadium. Gareth Stoker was at fault in the Boro defence on that occasion.

Five minutes later, Williams could have taken United's tally to five but Wood saved from twenty yards. It must have acted as a wake-up call, as the home side fought back and started creating chances. Diallo somehow shot wide with fifteen minutes to go, a free kick also went close and Scarborough looked lively. However, all attacks were broken down by a resiliant Hereford defence.

In the last minute, Gavin Williams had a free kick tipped over the bar. Hereford, though, will be pleased to have won this game and keep the pressure on Rushden and Yeovil. Scott Cooksey played superbly, but Scarborough can take heart that they have the attacking potential to go far, even if their defence isn't of the highest grade.

The referee, Mr Atkins of Bradford, made one booking. Jones of Scarborough on sixty seven minutes for a foul.

Hereford - Cooksey, Lane, Clarke, Robinson, Wright, James, Rodgerson, Snape, McIndoe, Elmes, Williams
Substitutions - Giddings (77)

Man of the Match - Scott Cooksey

Walker Scores Twice For 'Reserves'

Dan Walker scored both Hereford United's goals in a 'reserves' friendly against Hartpury College this morning.

The Bulls, whose squad comprised a mixture of seniors and under 18's, won 2-1.

The game was played at Edgar Street behind closed doors.

Young Bulls In FA Cup Action On Wednesday

Hereford United's Youth Team are in FA Cup action on Wednesday evening where they take on MK Dons at Edgar Street kick-off 7.30pm.

The youngsters have reached the first round proper of the Cup after wins against Newcastle, Stourbridge and Atherstone.

However MK Dons will be a tougher test for Peter Beadle's players.

The club is hopeful that there will be a good turnout for the game, both to support the youngsters and and to bring in some much needed income.

And to encourage season ticket holders to attend, there will be pints of draught beer in Addisons for just £2.50 on production of a season ticket book.

To watch the young Bulls will cost just £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.

Bulls Open Merchandise Shop In Club Reception

The Bulls will have club merchandise on sale throughout the week from the Club Reception.

A range of gifts for Christmas are available including hats, scarves, and HUFC Christmas Cards, along with Football Manager 2014 (£14.99, while stocks last).

Opening hours are 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, 11.30am-5pm Saturday, and Noon-4pm Sunday.

Bulls Consider Smoking Area In Stadium

The Bulls have put out a request for views from fans about turning the Blackfriars Terrace into a smoking area.

The terrace would be opened, for certain games, to allow smokers to watch the game from the terrace with the club seeking the views of fans.

More details are on the official site here.

News Round-Up

Former Bull Gavin Mahon has agreed a month long extension to his Portsmouth stay. The 36 year old has started one JPT game, and make one sub appearance in the League since agreeing a month long contract at the start of October. Ex-Bull Andy Williams is to have a scan on a knee problem that has limited him to two brief appearances for Yeovil in the last month.

Alfreton are to launch a fan consultation to discuss the way forward. The Reds have cut admission prices to £12 from £18 for their forthcoming game with Braintree to see if it can improve gates, but say they need to get at least 1,000 fans in to meet their usual take - and preferably 1,500 to show the discounted price is the way forward. A club statement says that by reverting to part-time status this season has brought better quality players to the club.

Chelmsford have parted company with manager Dean Holdsworth after just six month. The former Aldershot boss says he is leaving due to the club's cost cutting measures, with the club just a point above the relegation zone. Gateshead boss Gary Mills has been named Manager of the Month for October. Cambridge keeper Chris Maxwell won the player award.

Former Accrington MD Rob Heys says he was paid just £500 a week by the club. Heys was banned for 21 months for several hundred infringements of betting laws, with him losing around £2,000 in total over several years. Worcester's Supporters Trust is to present plans to build the club a new ground in the Perdiswell area of the city for the club. The proposals will see the club transformed into a fan-owned side.

Kidderminster chairman Mark Serrell has denied suggestions that the club is in financial danger, leading them to accept Forest Green's request to speak to Steve Burr in order to bank the compensation fee. Forest Green say they are not yet ready to make an appointment of a new manager. Along with Steve Burr, Terry Brown was at their game on Saturday while the Plymouth press report that Paul Sturrock is to also be interviewed.

Halloween Fright Night

Occasional contributor Chloecat reviews the past week:

As a gentle and now somewhat elderly but still very pretty tabby and white cat, Halloween doesn’t do much for me, unlike my black cat cousins who relish the opportunity to live up to their somewhat unfair reputation.  So I spent the night in, curtains closed, lights off, in front of the television, and settled down to watch Hereford play Salisbury Town.  I’m told Hereford tend to do quite well on the telly, but within 15 minutes I had my back to the screen as my owner watched on in horror at the Halloween fright night unfolding in front of her.  She tells me that Hereford were a little unfortunate – the second Salisbury goal was deflected in and the third had an element of handball about it, and that to concede 2 goals in the last minutes of a game gives the score a somewhat skewed look about it, but even so it wasn’t pretty.

She was also at Hornchurch on Saturday and that wasn’t pretty either.  What’s going wrong?  Well obviously confidence is low, the goals aren’t going in, and once they concede Hereford struggle to come back.  The language off the bench on Saturday was not fit for delicate ears, but the frustration felt by the management team is understandable.  Hornchurch played with 10 men for most of the second, but apparently you couldn’t tell.  Some players aren’t doing as well as had been hoped or expected.  My owner was so excited on 10th August, now she just looks scared.

So what is to be done – as a mere moggy I have no idea, and neither does my owner.  But I do know that she will abandon me on a regular basis to follow her passion for Hereford, that she expects others to do the same and that the only way we’ll get out of it is by sticking together.  Apparently I’m to be left on my own next weekend as she travels to some place called Burton on Trent for some competition called the FA Cup, apparently it is very important. Will you be there?

Stuart Blake And Hereford United

Stuart Blake
Earlier this week Hereford United released a statement on the recent share consulation. Included in the article was a list of directors. One of non-executive directors named in the list was Stuart Blake.

Mention of Blake's directorship was noted on Bulls Banter.

However the statement has since been changed and Blake's name dropped from the list of directors.

Why this has happened isn't known but it's not the first time Blake has been described as a non-executive director.

Back in the summer, a glossy brochure was sent out detailing the Hereford United debenture scheme.

And whose signature was on the brochure?  Stuart J Blake Non-Executive Director.

When the chairman was asked at a shareholders meeting if Blake was a director, David Keyte replied no.

But it happened again when a youth team photo appeared on the OS with Blake named as a director. Later the picture disappeared.

Blake has been involved with Hereford United as a consultant for the last twelve months.

Perhaps the first time supporters and shareholders knew about his appointment was from an article in the Hereford Times.

Blake told the paper that he was working with the club to secure a stadium sponsor.

"We are looking for a company to sponsor the ground for this season and beyond," he said.

"We are getting interest, particularly from Herefordshire companies and the odd one from companies in the West Midlands."

However Blake was also mentioned at the end of an HT article dated October 26th.

The club had decided to launch a Corporate Ticket Scheme and for more details the contact was Stuart Blake not Hereford United.

Fast forward to last spring and reports that Arab investors could be coming to Edgar Street. It's thought this was down to Blake.

"There is an overseas investor that we've been working on for about four months," said Chairman David Keyte.

"I thought it would have been through by now - there are some banking system hang-ups or something.

"If it comes off, then I can probably put my cheque book away for about three years."

Nothing more was heard about this.

In May Blake gave a presentation at a shareholders meeting about the proposed share issue and the debenture scheme.

On June 10th details of the debenture scheme were circulated.

Five days later Blake told the Hereford Times that "There has been interest locally, from London and even from overseas.
"We have a target of 70 and there have already been 20 or 30 expressions of interest."
And at a shareholders meeting Blake said 'the debenture scheme might bring in £350K'. However that now looks unlikely. In fact it's thought no more than a handfull have been sold so far.

Next came questions from shareholders about the details of the proposed share issue which many felt had been poorly drafted.

"The Board are preparing answers to questions and shall be releasing them offically on Tuesday," Blake told BN.

However Tuesday never came. A few days later it was reported on the OS that the board would be writing to shareholders. But that didn't happen.

On Monday July 22nd shareholders failed to support a crucial part of the share issue plans and so it was back to square one.

On September 9th, there was the official launch of the Debenture Scheme and Blake hired former MP Michael Portillo to give a speech at a cost reputed to be between £3,000 and £7,000 depending on the source.

Before the meeting Blake spoke to the Hereford Times.

"Having already received considerable interest in the 1939 Executive Club, we are delighted to have such a huge profile member of the international business community (Portillo) to launch our business networking club," said consultant Stuart Blake.

"We are talking with a number of international business leaders to host future events such as Professor Garry Hunt, Robert Walters and James Caan."

Blake has also been hiring staff for the club. In June an advert appeared for a Football in the Community Manager and details could be obtained from Blake's company not the football club. It later transpired there wasn't a vacancy.

BN understands Blake is not being paid for his work. However, given the club's ongoing financial problems, the question has to be posed whether Blake's involvement has, as yet, brought any real benefit to the club.
And why is he sometimes listed as a non-executive director when, as far as is known, he isn't.

UPDATED 9.30pm:

Blake is believed to be currently involved with three companies. One of these 'Define Risk Solutions' is registered at Companies House. It's said to operate from 46 Bridge Street, Hereford.

However BN has been told that Blake no longer works from this address.

Another of his 'companies' is Herefordshire Recruitment Services and the third is CV Plan.

Listed as one of the 'partners' in CV Plan is Hereford United chairman David Keyte.

Keyte's Harry Topper Wins At Wetherby

Hereford United chairman David Keyte's Harry Topper won the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby yesterday afternoon.

It came in at 5/1.

"Last year he was running in novice chases and we gave him time and we weren't able to give him the chance to do that in a race like this - I'm afraid it's just a case of him warming up over his early fences," said trainer Kim Bailey.

"He's got guts and that's what takes him away from most horses. He doesn't want to be headed and to give him his due he hardly has been.

"There was no point coming here today to learn if he was fit and that's why he was fit today. We'll give him a few days now to let him get over this. He's in the Hennessy but I don't think we'll be going there.

"The Gold Cup obviously has to be something you think about."

Ex-Bull Watch

Febian Brandy was sent off for Sheff Utd as they lost at Shrewsbury. Ryan Bowman scored twice for York as they drew 2-2 at Cheltenham. Joe Anyinsah scored for Wrexham as they lost to Macclesfield.

Results Round-Up

The Bulls remain 19th in the Conference after today's results, with Tamworth moving level on points. The Lambs drew 0-0 with Braintree to hold 20th place and move within three goals of the Bulls, while Woking lost 2-1 at home to Grimsby to remain three points behind. Chester drew 1-1 with Aldershot to join Woking, with the Shots a point further behind. Hyde missed out on their first win of the season when Nuneaton equalised deep in stoppage time to claim a 2-2 draw. Dartford lost 1-0 at Forest Green to stay a point ahead of the Bulls, with the Gumpers moving four clear. Wrexham lost 3-2 at Macclesfield to stay two points ahead.

At the top, Cambridge lost for the first time this season as they went down 1-0 at Southport. Their lead stays at six points with Kidderminster losing 1-0 at Barnet, with manager Steve Burr not in attendance. Luton drew 0-0 with Gateshead to hold third, with Grimsby up to fourth with their win.  Alfreton move back into the chasing pack with a 3-0 win over Halifax, and Welling beat Lincoln 1-0 to move up to eighth.

FA Cup opponents Burton lost at home to Morecambe 1-0, and had defender Shane Cansdell-Sheriff sent off for a second yellow. He will miss the FA Cup match next Sunday.

News Round-Up

Having been taken over by their Supporters Trust earlier in the year, Wycombe plan to raise working capital for the club by consolidating the existing share base and issuing new shares. They aim to raise a total of £1.2million, and are asking fans to commit £20 a month over the next four years to meet the sum. The Trust say they are close to making the club break even, but aim to raise the first £250,000 by the end of the current season.

Droylsden manager Dave Pace has told the BBC the club is £280,000 in debt. The Evo-Stik Premier side was relegated from Conf North in the summer. Nuneaton have signed Colchester forward Freddy Ladapo on loan for an initial month. The 20 year old spent the first month of the season on loan at Woking, making one start and three sub appearances.

Woking have signed winger Charles Banya on loan from Fulham for an initial month. The 20 year old is yet to make his first team debut after being with the Premier League side since he was 12. Aldershot have signed Portsmouth defender Dan Butler on loan for an initial month, and taken on Reading keeper Jonathan Henly until January. 19 year old Butler made a string of appearances for Pompey during their financial troubles, while Henly, also 19, signed a new Royals deal in the summer.

Southport midfielder Bruce Irie-Bi has been ruled out for three weeks with an ankle problem. Chester have signed two teenage players from Bolton on loan for an initial month. Midfielder Chris Lester is a Northern Ireland u21 international, while striker Conor Wilkinson cost the Trotters a fee from Millwall in the summer.

Eastwood Town have been issued with a winding up petition from the taxman over an outstanding £160,000 bill. The club says the sum relates to 40 former staff members that were never issued P45's when they left, and the error was compounded when the club started using a new tax reference when the current board took over.

HUISA Confirm Forum Request

This from the HUISA site, posted on Friday afternoon:

HUISA chairman Keith Dodd has again today contacted the club to ask for a fans forum with the manager at the earliest convenience. As of 5.00pm he has not heard back and will speak to the office again on Monday.

Keyte Meets Trust Chairman

BN understands that a meeting between Hereford United chairman David Keyte and Trust (HUST) acting chairman Chris Williams took place earlier today.

The meeting was arranged to discuss the ACV (Asset of Community Value) for Edgar Street.

Kiddy Let Burr Talks To Gumpers

Kidderminster have agreed to allow manager Steve Burr to speak to Forest Green about their vacant managerial position.

A club statement says that Burr was 'reluctantly' given permission after the Gumpers approached the club for Burr's services. The statement infers that assistant boss Gary Whild will take charge of the Harriers in their game with Barnet tomorrow.

Burr was the bookies' Even money favourite yesterday afternoon, and was 1/2 when the announcement was made.

We'll Continue To Improve Says Salisbury Manager

Salisbury manager Mikey Harris feels his side can continue to improve after their well-deserved 4-1 over Hereford United last night.

"I think we were excellent in the first half – getting two goals to go in front," said Harris.

"But fair play to Hereford, they came out in the second half, changed their game-plan, and caused us a lot of problems.

"They are a big side and at 2-1 we seemed to lose our nerve a little bit, if I’m perfectly honest. We made things difficult for ourselves by not keeping possession well enough and that allowed them to come back into the game.

"But credit to the boys, though, they dug in and two bits of quality made sure of the three points. We still have a lot of work to do and will continue to improve."

Bulls comfortably beaten at Salisbury

Hereford United slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Salisbury while turning in probably the most lack-lustre performance of recent years.  Two first half goals by the hosts were followed by another pair late in the game making Sam Smith’s reply little more than a consolation.

Danny Leadbitter Played As A WingBack In The First Half
Martin Foyle experimented with a 3-5-2 formation employing Danny Leadbitter and Chris Bush as wing-backs.  Rod McDonald overcame his strain at Hornchurch to line up in the back three with Dom Collins and Luke Graham.  A central three of O’Keefe, Purdie and Artus were tasked with providing opportunities for Ross Dyer and, somewhat surprisingly, Sam Smith.  Former Bull’s keeper and dance specialist James Bittner was named on the bench for Salisbury.

The initial exchanges were edgy and erratic from both sides with just an off-target effort from Artus but when Salisbury settled they took an early lead.  Danny Leadbitter’s indecision conceded a corner and Frear’s cross was headed in by Kamdjo with just nine minutes played.

Salisbury's First Goal
A pair of corners filed to produce any threat then another speculative effort from Artus flew wide of the mark following a decent Hereford move through midfield.  A period of control by Salisbury produced little until a mistake on twenty-eight minutes resulted in a second goal.

The ball was played across the edge of the box and Dan Fitchett’s shot took a deflection to creep in just inside the upright.

Chris Bush picked up a yellow that will keep him out of the Burton game just before the break and as the half closed, Rob Purdie curled a free kick over the wall but it was comfortably gathered by home custodian Will Puddy.

Purdie And Bush Debating Over Which One Should Take The Free-Kick
HT Salisbury 2 Bulls 0

With the experimental formation clearly not working, Martin Foyle reverted to a back four in the second period with Chris Bush withdrawn for Michael Rankine to join the attack.  Leadbitter moved to a conventional left back slot as United adopted a 4-3-3 approach.

Substitute Rankine Provided A Bit More Beef Up Front
Rankine announced his arrival with a robust challenge on central defender James Clarke and collected a yellow just thirty seconds on the pitch.  The Bulls seemed to be taking more of the initiative in the opening third of the second half and got a goal back with half an hour remaining.  A corner taken by Rob Purdie was met by a Rankine header and Sam Smith’s further header found the net from close range.

Get In!
Buoyed by the success, The Bulls stormed forward albeit in a less than orderly fashion in search of an equaliser.  Good work by Purdie, Artus and O’Keefe released Smith down the right but with Rankine and Dyer poised in the box his cross was directed straight into the waiting arms of Puddy.

An Artus flag kick flew dangerously across the face of the goal without a Hereford player able to get a positive strike on goal before another Artus cross found Smith unmarked but his leap was miss-timed and the ball sailed to the safety of a goal kick.

With twenty minutes remaining Kevin Krans joined the action in place of Rob Purdie and ten minutes later Artus was withdrawn in favour of Dan Walker.

Salisbury's Stuart Sinclair Clears A Corner
With five strikers on the pitch and O’Keefe still looking to join the attack it was little surprise that The Bulls’ back line would be left exposed and two late goals from Salisbury completed a miserable night for United.

A move down the right, which included a deft handball, finished with Fitchett grabbing his second from 10 yards and deep into stoppage time substitute Ben Wright side footed home from twenty-five yards past a ponderous Rhys Evans.

Whilst many, including myself, have been calling for the pace of Leadbitter to be employed further up the pitch it was surprising for it to come at the expense of a defensive formation that, in the main, has been pretty reliable.

Salisbury’s formation was similar but they seemed more comfortable with the shape and had strikers that, although lacking in height, found space to receive the ball and held it far better than the Hereford front line.  Until Michael Rankine came on after the interval, The Bulls lacked focus and determination up top and the gradual withdrawal of the midfield simply served to allow the hosts back into a match that had appeared to be drifting away from them.

It was certainly time for a change but maybe this was too radical and perhaps employed the wrong pieces of the jigsaw?

Worrying times.  Let’s all go and watch the youth on Wednesday.

Grimsby Post £450,000 Loss

Grimsby have posted a £450,000 loss for last season, their latest accounts show.

The Mariners reached the FA Trophy final and the play-offs, but still recorded a substantial loss with operating costs increasing by nearly £1million on the previous season as the club invested heavily in the playing squad.

The club's balance sheet shows total debts of close to £3million, with the accounts noting that the Directors 'continue to seek the necessary funding to provide the company with financial security'.

The full accounts are on the club's Shareholders website here.

Fans Turn Out To Support Club

Overflow in Starlite Rooms
Despite the on-pitch result, fans filled Addisons last night to watch the game and help fill the club's coffers.

Close to 100 fans turned up at the club to take advantage of the discounted beer and cheer on the Bulls, putting nearly £600 over the bar.

Demand was so great that, with Addisons packed solid, HUISA chairman Keith Dodd and Supporters Trust working group member Paul Stevens teamed up to voluntarily open the Starlite Room bar to cope with demand.

With a limited number of home matches in the coming weeks, the club needs all the alternative income it can get.

Tonight, Paul and club photographer Steve Niblett have their latest Mod Nite after June's successful debut. Tomorrow, there is a youth section fundraiser featuring Mexican band Los Squideros.

Next Wednesday, the highly rated u18 side face MK Dons in the FA Youth Cup - and it will easily be the best £5 worth of entertainment you'll get in Herefordshire!

Fans Demand Answers

The Bulls have collected only one win from their last 11 games, six points from a possible 33, and have netted only 17 times in 18 games this term. Attendances are falling, and the club had to ask HUISA to fund a loan signing.

Back at the end of July Martin Foyle declined an invitation from HUISA to hold a Fans Forum, saying that he wanted to wait until a dozen games into the season before meeting fans. It is understood that several requests have been submitted for a Forum over the past six weeks without success.

David Keyte is due to meet Acting Supporters Trust Chairman Chris Williams today, and yesterday's Share Consultation Report noted that the Board had held discussions with HUISA Chairman Keith Dodd, but the wider Liaison Committee have not met since January.

Bulls fans have woken up this morning demanding answers to the current state the club finds itself in.
