The Village Green Preservation Society

Simon Wright took in the delights of the Forest of Dean...

“Fancy going to Coventry v WBA on Saturday?” asked a chum.
“No, not really...”
“But you’re going to an obscure Gloucestershire village on a Thursday night?”

Travelling to a friendly at Lydbrook midweek, especially from the Black Country doesn’t make any sense. But yet in other ways it makes perfect sense. An evening at “Reeds” was an essential investment to sustain me through the aftermath of a 1-0 home defeat to Barnet in mid-winter or some such.

How can you not be intrigued by ground directions that include the line “the ground is opposite the red phone box”? It is just a ground, bunker-like new changing rooms apart. No cover, no seats other than a few benches under three gazebos for the substitutes and the United board. The pitch has a rail on one side of the ground, a couple of portaloos and improvised but excellent refreshment facilities. The hot dog onions were first class. And that’s literally fine in July for a little village club which seems to have its own weather system. Dark clouds circled overhead all evening but no rain fell upon our heads - unlike in neighbouring areas.

The location – oh wow. Accepting it was just over the border in Gloucestershire, the scenery was spectacular. Tall verdant trees, towering hills with the Wye and an ancient lonely church nearby – the sort of establishment which would keep author Phil Rickman in royalties for another year. Two other sides of the pitch had been roped to keep spectators at a safe distance. For me, there were shades of a village fete about Lydbrook. For no sensible reason, I was reminded of the Kinks classic album “Village Green Preservation Society”. Readers under 50 are best advised to move on rapidly...

Overlooking the ground was a derelict former paper mill. This was a huge, vaguely sinister site which reeked of untold tales. Once it had hundreds of people working there which sustained the local community. Where did they all go? Until the opening of their new changing facilities “despite not receiving a penny from the FA” (as the programme tartly noted), Athletic and their opponents used an upstairs section of the factory to don their football kits.

I’m not familiar with the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League but it’s logical to assume Lydbrook are a couple of rungs lower than the hardly-large-themselves Ledbury Town. Hosting 700 spectators was no easy task in these litigious times and Athletic deserve praise for their smooth operation run by enthusiastic friendly people.

The admission tickets were among the smartest most impressive I’ve ever seen for a game. There’s nothing to match them in the Premier League for sure. United collectors would be well advised to get hold of one.

The result was predictable enough and the details are already recorded elsewhere. The full Bulls first team needed 30 minutes and a goalkeeping error to get into gear, after which the traffic became one way. The weary villagers basically played the whole of the second half in their own half.

I’m grateful for Nigel Preece for correcting a classic exiles mistake before it came too embarrassing. He gently pointed out to me that the smartly be-suited mature gentleman to my left wasn’t our club owner but rather Richard Prime of the Hereford Times. “Keyte’s over there in the red jumper drinking from a can of Strongbow.” Not a criticism more an observation of an unusual sighting on an unusual evening.

We slipped away a couple of minutes before the meandering end for another brief treat. Supping a pint of Butty Bach at the Saracens Head in Symonds Yat which combines my favourite beer with one of my favourite Shire locations. Beat that. Come the winter I will look back fondly on this night with its gentle victory and all optimism intact.

All Players Sponsored

The official site has announced that all seventeen players at the club so far have now been sponsored.

Last season only around half the players had sponsors but, with confidence high following the change in management, fans and local businesses have been quick to return to the club with solid cash backing.

News Round Up

Bradford forward Gavin Grant has been convicted of murder. He was originally cleared of the same charge in 2007, but will now be sentenced on Monday. Northampton have signed Middlesboro defender John Johnson on a two year deal. The 21 year old had his contract at the Riverside cancelled to make the move after spending last season at Sixfields.

Accrington have agreed to sign former Liverpool trainee midfeilder Ray Putterill and veteran winger Andy Parkinson when their transfer embargo is lifted. Port Vale have been given seven days to agree to a £400,000 investment offer from US based hedge fund trader Mike Newton. Newton says that if the board turn down his offer he will lobby fans directly.

Gillingham have signed midfielder Danny Spiller on a deal until January. He spent eight years at the Priestfield before leaving in 2007, but has made just 13 League starts in stints for Millwall, Wycombe, and Dagenham since. Accrington have cancelled a friendly with Burnley as their £70,000 pitch upgrade is not ready yet. The hope the improvements, including sprinklers and drainage, will ease their problems after eight home games were called off last season.

Davey talks about the FA Cup

Last Tuesday Brain Viner of the Independent chaired the Hereford United's Fans Forum at Leominster.

In his column this morning he mentions the forum and in particular manager Simon Davey and the FA Cup

On Tuesday, at the Rankin social club in Leominster, our nearest town, I chaired an evening of questions for the engaging new chairman of Hereford United, David Keyte, and the manager he recently appointed, Simon Davey. It was as Barnsley manager that Davey masterminded the two greatest FA Cup upsets of recent years, beating Liverpool away and Chelsea at home to reach a Wembley semi-final in 2008, so it is apt that he should find himself installed at Edgar Street, which witnessed the greatest FA Cup upset of yesteryear, non-league Hereford's famous 2-1 defeat of Newcastle United, in 1972.

On stage at the Rankin club, I asked Davey about Barnsley's thrilling FA Cup run, and he said that at Anfield, Rafa Benitez had been the least gracious of losers, while at Oakwell, Avram Grant could hardly have been more gracious. Nor, apparently, could John Terry. The erstwhile England captain has received consistently (and not exactly undeserved) bad press these last few months, so I'm pleased to report that at the end of that crushing defeat to Barnsley, he made his way to the home dressing room and offered the exultant players his congratulations, telling them they had thoroughly deserved their great victory and that he hoped they would go on to lift the Cup.

The new Hereford manager also told a lovely story about an even more celebrated England player, albeit before most of us had heard of him. In 1995, Davey made his home debut for Preston North End in the same game, against Doncaster Rovers, as a youngster by the name of Beckham on a month's loan from Manchester United. Davey had come from Carlisle United, where he had taken all the corners and free-kicks, so both he and Paul Raynor, the dead-ball specialist at Preston, were miffed to be told by manager Gary Peters that shy, young David was to be given all corners and free-kicks. They were both still sulking when the lad made his way over to take the first corner, which he promptly bent directly into the goal. In the next game, when a free-kick was awarded just outside the box, Davey eventually stood down after a little tussle with Beckham for the ball, then watched it fly into the top right-hand corner. "I have often wondered," said Davey, with a comedian's timing, "what would have happened to my career if I'd taken that free-kick."

Radfords Open Tomorrow

Radfords will open tomorrow for those supporters attending the Hereford United open day.

Access will only be from inside the Edgar Street Stadium.

Meanwhile in other news there are a couple jobs available at the club.

Help is required in the club shop both during the week and on matchdays. There is also some casual work in the main club office.

More details from the club.

Finally every player currently signed has now be sponsored.

We are nearly there - Davey

Hereford United manager Simon Davey has said that he is nearing completion of his squad. However he admits he is short of a couple of wingers which is why he would like to secure the signing of former player Lionel Ainsworth who is currently with Huddersfield Town.

"We're probably two or three players away from it and if we could get one or two of the wide players in over the weekend then we would be closer again," Davey told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We are nearly there and it is now just fine tuning and getting the squad up to speed for the start of the season."

Capaldi on trial at Plymouth

Tony Capaldi, who played for Hereford United in the 2001/02 season, is on trial at Plymouth Argyle and could feature for them at the Edgar Street friendly next Wednesday.

Capaldi had been at Cardiff City but was recently released.

Plymouth have just returned from a week long tour of Holland under new manager Peter Reed. They played three games whilst there, winning one, drawing one and losing one.

Bulls 6/1 For The Drop

The Bulls are 6/1 to be relegated from League Two this season.

William Hill have published the first relegation odds, with the Bulls ahead of seven other sides including Cheltenham, Stockport, and Southend. Usual relegation candidates Accrington, Barnet, and Macclesfield are also at the wrong end of the list.

Extrabet are also offering 10/1 on the Bulls ending up in the top 3, although you can get 11/1 on the Bulls being promoted with Corals - meaning better odds for a top 3 spot or winning the play-offs.

In the overall winners list, Bradford have taken favourites spot overall from Gillingham although both are a best-priced 10/1. There has been little movement overall although Morecambe, whose pre-season has been affected by their stadium delays, have slipped to 20/1 after opening their campaign with a 5-0 loss to Barrow.

Clarke Quits After FA Ban

Former Bulls defender Matt Clarke has quit as manager of Halesowen after the FA handed him a 12 month football ban for betting on games he was involved in.

Clarke, 36, has also received a £3,500 fine for his 25 breaches of FA rules. Assistant boss, and fellow ex-Bull Rob Elmes has said he will stay with the club. Yeltz captain Scott Rickards, who was also charged by the FA, was fined £2,500 and banned for six months - with £500 of the fine coming for not assisting in the investigation, while Howard Forinton was suspended for four months and fined £500. Clarke told the Birmingham Mail:

“I was naive and stupid. It wasn’t a betting scam, I placed bets on games which was wrong and stupid. As a result of the ban, I’ve handed in my resignation at Halesowen.

“I’m disappointed it has ended as it has but I have to accept my punishment. I can’t condone what I’ve done. I want to put it behind me and move on.”

A FA statement adds: 'The Commission also considered the mitigation in other areas submitted by the players, including the fact that the players were not expecting to play in the games on which they had placed a bet and also the fact they had not been paid by the Club for several weeks increased their financial pressures. '

News Round Up

Gary Hooper is claimed by the morning press to be set for a £2.5million switch to Newcastle. The move would give ailing Southend a £500,000 boost with their sell-on clause. Aldershot have signed 34 year old former Reading and Burnley midfielder Glen Little on a 12 month deal. He has started just 16 League games in the last two seasons.

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler wants Aldershot striker Marvin Morgan. The Gills have signed former Woking defender Tony Sinclair on a one year contract. Stockport have signed former Weymouth defender Jordan Rose. The 20 year old left the Terras in March as their financial situation worsened and ended the season at Paulton Rovers.

Accrington say they have submitted their overdue accounts that caused them to get a transfer embargo. They hope to have that embargo lifted soon. They have also confirmed that former chairman Eric Whalley still owns the majority of the shares with the transfer to chief executive Dave O'Neill still to be completed after nearly two years.

Crewe have signed centre back Adam Dugdale on a six month contract. The 22 year old was an Academy graduate at Crewe but was released three years ago before playing for a number of non-league sides. Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner blamed the pitch for their performance in last night's single goal victory over Rushden. The Shrews had striker Matt Harrold taken to hospital after a clash of heads, and needed a late deflected goal to avoid the draw.

Lincoln target Steven Lennon, who was offered a contract by Chris Sutton at the end of last season, has signed for Irish side Dundalk. Oxford have signed released Chelsea defender Harry Worley on a three year deal. The 21 year old played 22 times on loan at Crewe last season. Burton have signed former Bulls loanee Lewis Young, ex-Southampton trainee Garyn Preen, and former Aston Villa youngster Jack Dyer on one year contracts.

Sheffield Wednesday are the latest side to get a winding up order from HMRC over unpaid taxes. They will meet the taxman in court on August 11th over £550,000 of unpaid PAYE. Exeter have announced the signing of former Barnet striker John O'Flynn, beating Gillingham and Lincoln to the signature. Southend have added ex-Shrewsbury defender Graham Coughlan and former Bristol Rovers keeper Rhys Evans to the queue of players waiting on their transfer embargo to be lifted.

Wycombe have signed another player from Brentford, this time central defender Alan Bennett. The 28 year old, who played six times for the Chairboys on loan last season, is the fourth Bee to make the move. Aldershot have agreed a fee with Brentford for the transfer of forward Kirk Hudson, avoiding the need for a tribunal. The player made the move a month ago.

Open Day at Edgar Street Tomorrow

Hereford United will hold their first open day since 2006 tomorrow starting at 10.30am.

One of the main features will be the unveiling of the new home kit which will be available for purchase afterwards. The price of the shirts has been reduced from last year.

Adult: £29.99
Child: £21.99
Baby: £19.99

Season ticket holders and members receive a 10% discount on these prices - making an adult shirt just £26.99.

Another feature will be a chance for supporters to try and emulate Ronnie Radford's famous goal against Newcastle nearly 40 years ago - the one played at FA Cup time.

"When you think of Hereford you think of Ronnie Radford's goal, so we thought it would be fun to challenge the fans to try and score it again," said vice-chairman Tim Russon.

"The idea seems to have created quite a stir – we're expecting a long queue of wannabe Ronnies keen to see if they can have a go at repeating history."

Supporters will be able to watch the players having a training session during the first hour or so of the open day.

Afterwards supporters can pay £10 to have a picture of themselves with the squad.

Hereford United's new speed cage will be at the ground for supporters to see how fast they can shoot.

There will be a raffle, barbeque, bouncy castle and other stalls plus a sale of surplus kit.

Timetable:

Gates open at 10:30 - first team training between 11 and 12 - ronnie radford challenge starts at 12 - new kit unveiled at 12:30 - chance for fans to have their picture taken with team at 12:45 then autographs etc.

With no game for the Bulls until Wednesday and the prospect of a fine day, what better than to support the new 'regime' at Edgar Street than by coming along to the Open Day.

Season tickets and membership cards will be available.

Plenty of Ainsworth talk at Lydbrook

All the half-time talk at Lydbrook was the touchline gossip surrounding the possible return of Bulls’ favourite Lionel Ainsworth and late this evening, the Hereford Times’ Richard Prime in his on-line article reports that Simon Davey has confirmed that negotiations are continuing.

“I’ve spoken to Huddersfield and to Lionel's representatives and we are trying to sort something out,” said the Bulls chief.

"We're not quite there yet but it is somebody we would like to bring in to the football club.

"But, like many transfers, there are a lot of complications in them and this one is complicated.

"Hopefully we can get something done but we have got another one on the go as well which we are probably 95% with, too.

"He is another wide player and so, by Monday, we should have one in.”

Bulls hit seven at Lydbrook

Any fears of a poor playing surface were quickly dispelled as the Lydbrook groundsman, a Hereford fan, had prepared an excellent pitch on which the teams produced an entertaining game in front of what looked like around 700 spectators at Reeds Sports Ground this evening.

The Bulls ran out comfortable winners by seven goals to nil and a spirited Lydbrook side contained their visitors for half an hour. Stuart Fleetwood showed his predatory instincts with a hat-trick inside the closing fifteen minutes of the first period and a goal from McQuilken gave United a four goal interval lead and further goals in the second half from Malsom, youth player Aidan Thomas and Manset capped off a convincing victory.

The opening exchanges were dominated by The Bulls with Manbeast proving more than a handful for the hosts'
defence as he fired inches passed the upright. McQuilken made ground down the right before crossing low into the danger area. The ball evaded Canham and Manset fired well over from 15 yards when well placed. Then a Lunt corner found Thompson on the edge of the box but Bigga's crashing drive was scrambled clear. Quilks released Fleetwood on the right but Canham headed his inch perfect cross wide. Lydbrook busied themselves with some effective closing down but were unable to unlock The Bulls rearguard despite some tidy approach work.

Hereford opened their account on the half hour mark after Lunt's good work produced a shot which the home 'keeper was unable to hold. Canham pounced and crossed for Fleetwood to finish from close range. King Kenny then danced his way into the penalty area before squaring to Fleetwood for his second tap-in of the game on forty minutes. Fleets completed his hat-trick with a fine goal three minutes later. Once again Lunt was involved as he jinked his way passed two defenders before cutting the ball back to Fleetwood just inside the area and he dropped a shoulder before firing delightfully into the far corner of the net. On the stroke of half-time, the industrious McQuilken played a neat one-two with Manset before flicking the return ball passed the keeper.

HT Lydbrook 0 Bulls 4

The opening goal of the second half arrived while I was still queuing for my excellent hot-dog but I'm reliably informed that it was Malsom (on at half time for Canham) who headed home a loose ball following a goalmouth scramble. A Malsom shot thudded against the bar and Zak Evans fired the rebound against the foot of the upright before youth player Aidan Thomas drove home for the sixth. Manset rounded off the scoring when he converted a chance created by Sam Gwynne as the hosts visibly tired.

Hereford Starting XI - Connor, Green, Kovacs, Townsend, Valentine, Lunt, McQuilkin, Thompson, Manset, Canham, Fleetwood. All the Subs were used in the second period with Lunt and Canham returning to the action late on - Bartlett, Weir, Rose, Evans, Kanoute, Thomas, Stratford, Gwynne, Malson.

It was a very entertaining game and credit must go to Lydbrook who gave a competitive performance. Richard Rose wouldn't have had this one on his CV if he'd gone to Daggenham!

Bulls fans now look forward to the Open Day on Saturday and the final home friendly against Plymouth before round off the pre-season against Neath.

Bulls put Seven past Lydbrook

Hereford United defeated Lydbrook 7-0 in this evening's friendly.

A crowd of around 700 saw a first half hat-trick from Stuart Fleetwood. Other scorers were James McQuilken, Aidan Thomas, Mathieu Manset and Sam Malson.

The Bulls put out a strong squad in the first period but changed most of the players in the second half.

Full Report to follow.

Hereford Futures

At last evening's fans forum Hereford United chairman David Keyte said that he felt the Herefordshire Council's decision to 'rename' the Edgar Street Grid company into Hereford Futures would have no effect on the club.

For the record below is the mission statement of the new company:

Hereford Futures is the development company set up by Herefordshire Council to secure private sector investment and deliver new opportunities for the whole of Hereford – while protecting and promoting the special character of the city’s historic core.

The company takes its lead from the priorities recently voiced by residents in the council’s Shaping Our Place consultation, where local people said they wanted new and better-paid jobs, new enterprise, vibrant new communities and affordable homes, improved higher education facilities and better transport links. Hereford Futures will be responsible for ensuring that all this is delivered for Hereford.

The chief executive is Jonathan Bretherton, previously chief executive with ESG Herefordshire Ltd, and the chairman is Ted Willmott CB OBE. ESG had succeeded in bringing substantial investment into Hereford through the new £650-million regeneration project.

Hereford Futures will build on this track record to ensure the whole city is well placed to benefit from the upturn in the economy. It will drive improvements in the transport infrastructure, develop new communities and urgently needed decent, affordable and sustainable, energy-efficient homes for the whole city, investigate smaller sites within the city core where new retailing or residential development could take place; deliver the new flood alleviation and protection measures to ensure peace of mind for city residents and businesses; open up new strategic business parks to attract new enterprises, and maximise the opportunities for the new livestock market.

No Whaley For Bulls

Hereford United manager Simon Davey has said that he will not be signing Simon Whaley.

25 year old Whaley played for Davey when the two were at Barnsley together. He was released by Norwich City at the end of last season.

Meanwhile a former Hereford United player is on trial at Telford.

Karl Broadhurst is trying for a contract at the Shropshire club after being released by Crawley.

Assistant manager Darren Read told BBC Radio Shropshire: "He is going to train with us and we're very interested in him.

"He has bags of experience and is a very highly rated player. Karl is very comfortable on the ball and a commanding figure, a natural leader on the pitch,"

Former Bull Bill Larder has died

Bill Larder who played football for Hereford United has died in Somerset aged 84.

Larder was born in Doncaster and later joined the RAF. In 1949 his work took him to RAF Stafford.

As a semi-professional he played football for Stafford Rangers before a spell with Hereford United during the 1950/51 season.

We can balance the books - Keyte

New chairman David Keyte told last night's fans forum that Hereford United lost money in Graham Turner's last season at the club.

The loss was expected as gates dropped to a six year low.

"The club has declared a profit in the previous five years but will report a small loss last year," said Keyte.

"It is possible in a small club to make a few pounds.

"In Hereford United's case to almost break even on 2100 when from a little bit of research I did before, talking to mates locally, there is quite a ground swell of people who have given up going in the last four or five years - I suspect average could well be 3000. It always used to be.

"2500, 2750 we could spend some money on players but still balance the books."

One of the questions from the floor was about the £1m owed to the Richardsons and about Formsole. Keyte said he had met them last Monday.

"I put it to them that after 15 years the debt was probably zero in their books and that was before reading the Bulls News work (article on Formsole last Tuesday) - which I read avidly every day, I do at the moment perhaps at Christmas we won't do!

"It comes down to how much do you want. They are quite hard-nosed about it.

"They have inherited things on paper that say Hereford United owe them £1m.

"They promised to come back to me by the end of the week in response to my offer which is basically using the same £1 which I used ten years ago (to buy his former school).

Four Bulls Left To Sponsor

Just four of the current seventeen man Bulls squad are left to sponsor for the coming season.

Local pair Sam Gwynne and Tyler Weir, plus recent additions Daniel Stratford and Sam Malsom are the only four left for the coming season. Sponsorship costs £300+vat, and includes a mention in the programme and the player's shirt at the end of the season.

At the end of last season just twelve players and staff were listed in the match programme as being sponsored.

News Round Up

Truro have confirmed the signing of ex-Bull Alex Jeannin. The 32 year old left the Bulls three years ago, moving to Oxford before spells with Kidderminster and Mansfield. He missed last season with a broken leg. Gary Hooper will take part in his first pre-season game for Scunthorpe with a move away beginning to look unlikely. Both Middlesboro and Celtic have signed strikers since expressing interest.

Morecambe lost their opening pre-season friendly 5-0 to Barrow last night. Their pre-season plans have been decimated by the late delivery of their new stadium. Port Vale have cut their youth budget by £100,000 due to financial restrictions at Vale Park. They were doubling the £200,000 received from the Football League Trust.

Ex-Bull Ben Smith says he took a pay cut to stay with Crawley - just weeks before they spent £170,000 on Matt Tubbs and Sergio Torres. They are now claimed to have agreed a substantial five figure sum for Salisbury midfielder Chris Flood after having a £150,000 bid for Rushden's Lee Tomlin rejected. Craig Mawson made an unexpected debut for Burnley, 13 years after originally joining the club as a pro, in their Singapore tour match with Gombak United.

The Guardian reports that Southend chairman Ron Martin was 'elected' the the Football League board as no-one else stepped forward for the job. The Shrimpers have added former Aldershot winger Louie Soares to the lengthy queue of players awaiting contracts when the club's embargo is lifted. Barnet have done a swift u-turn and banned vuvuzelas after feedback from supporters just a day after announcing they were OK.

Burton have signed Millwall midfielder Adam Bolder on a two year deal. The former QPR man had a year left on his New Den contract, but was allowed to leave on a free after spending the second half of last season on loan with Bradford.

Keyte retires from Bredon School

Hereford United chairman David Keyte has retired from his day job, Principle of Bredon School.

Keyte has been at the school, which is close to both Upton-on-Severn and Tewkesbury, for the last ten years. He joined as Bursar in 2000 and bought the school in 2002 for £1 when numbers were low. Recently there have been as many as 240 pupils.

In February last year Keyte sold the school to a Spanish-British education group Colegios Laude after turning down several other offers. He will continue as a director.

Tributes to Keyte were paid at their Founder's Day.

"There have been pressures to change the fundamental ethos, but David has continued to champion the vision of 1962," said teacher Doug Sharp as reported by the Worcester News.

"Mr Ketye really cares about people," said Paul Albrecht, Chief Executive of Colegios Laude. "I have found him to be an honest, transparent partner; a no-nonsense and hard-working businessman."

Davey Wants Ainsworth...

...and so does every Bulls fan!

At tonight's Fans Forum at the Rankin Club in Leominster, Simon Davey confirmed that he had approached Huddersfield to bring Lionel Ainsworth back to Edgar Street.

The flying winger, who only made 26 appearances for the Bulls in two spells, has made more appearances in Bulls colours than for any other side despite costing both Watford and Huddersfield significant six-figure fees.

He has also scored 11 of his twelve senior goals for the Bulls, with the other coming in the Conference for Halifax. His record outside of a Bulls shirt reads one goal in 80 games.

Come on Lionel, you know it makes sense!

Bulls to Finish 20th say Imps

As ever at this time of year supposed pundits make their predictions as to where clubs in their league might finish the forth-coming season.

One of the first to predict is Nathan Jackson who writes for the Imps.ka

Here's part of his article:

Hereford United are one of the sides who have done a lot of business over the summer, including arguably the most controversial management appointments in the League. Simon Davey had caused much controversy over his departure from Darlington and he's assembling a new squad at Hereford, whether it's a good squad is very much up for debate though.

Davey, a man who showed very little loyalty over the summer, has replaced Graham Turner at Edgar Street. He had been given the job at Darlington when no-one else seemingly wanted to give him a chance following his sacking from Barnsley. However, the first sign of Football League interest and Davey was gone before his computer had even finished logging out. It was a move than enraged the Darlington chairman.

Davey was accused of not even seeing the Chairman face to face to say he was leaving, allegedly resigning through email and that combined with how quickly he left Hereford, really does make you question what his motives are. Is he the sort of manager that will leave as soon as he gets an offer from higher up the League? If that is the case then it could spell disaster for Hereford.

One thing you can't accuse Davey of though is wasting time in terms of transfers. Despite single handedly gifting Davey's Barnsley a victory in the Carling Cup last season against the Imps, Davey gave Janos Kovacs the chance to return to the League. Yes, they've brought in a passionate player in Kovacs, but passion doesn't necessarily make you any good. Other transfers in include Sean Canham and the return of Stuart Fleetwood.

Fleetwood had previously spent a spell at Hereford that included their opening year in the Football League. He replaces Gavin McCallum but Fleetwood in the Football League can best be described as an underachiever. He scored 28 goals in one season in the Blue Square Premier, but has never scored more than 8 goals in one season in the Football League. He hit just seven goals in 36 games for Exeter in two spells on loan. Infact, since leaving Forest Green in 2008, he has scored just nine League goals in fifty-three appearances.

It's almost irrelevant looking at their results from last season as it's a new manager, near enough a brand new squad and therefore looking deeply into their results from last year would an exercise in futility. However, they have had two rather interesting pre-season results at Edgar Street. They beat Swansea City 2-0 but then lost 4-1 to Swindon, who are in division below Swansea.

I think this could be another year of struggle for Hereford. Davey is far from a proven manager, with a winning record of 32.61% at Barnsley over three years and 30% over ten games at Darlington. Infact, you get the feeling that he will walk out of the club as soon as a bigger club comes along for him and his squad isn't exactly full of players you would consider amongst the best in the division. Relying on Stuart Fleetwood, a man who has only ever been prolific in the non-league, could be interesting.

However, I think that they will relatively easily avoid relegation. I can see them being in the lower quarter of the table for a long time during the season, but I think they've got just enough to be able to avoid the drop, so I'm going to predict they will finish 20th.

VP "200 Club" Draw

Every year the Vice-Presidents Club run a '200 Club' competition, entries are £24, with 3 prizes every month from August to May of £50, £25 and £10. Then, in May, one lucky entrant wins £500 in the Superdraw.

This has raised over £10,000 in the last decade for the football club, and I am hopeful we can reach out to all Hereford supporters this season to sell more entries.

Draws are made at the end of each month in the VP Club. Please see the section on the Official Site for more details and entry forms. http://www.herefordunited.co.uk/page/200Club/0,,10835,00.html

Forum to Sponsor Lunt

Another 'supporters' group is to sponsor a Hereford United player this coming season.

Some of the members of the Bulls Banter Forum have raised the required sum of money and they have chosen mid-fielder Kenny Lunt as their sponsored player.

They are the third 'group' to sponsor a player this season following the lead given by Bulls News and the Fun Bus who have sponsored Stuart Fleetwood and Mathieu Manset respectively.

In other club news, supporters can have their picture taken with the Hereford United squad at Saturday's open day for the price of just £10.

Some of the players from last season have changed numbers. Richard Rose has moved from 4 to 6, displacing Kenny Lunt to no.16. Mathieu Manset claims the no.9 shirt that was Lee Morris' last season.

Meanwhile the Hereford Times reports that fans will be able to have a picture with Simon Davey and full squad at the Open Day for £10.

More Help for Bulls

Both last night at Telford and last Friday at Edgar Street there was a fresh face directing part of the Hereford United players pre-match warm up.

He was also on the pitch at half-time assisting.

As yet we're not aware who he is and what his official title may be.

Update: Tim Russon, Hereford United's vice chairman, has revealed that the person is 'Tom Whittaker - a sports scientist - who has been helping out with pre-season training for the last two weeks'.

Whittaker came on a sub-goalie for Ledbury Town in the recent friendly against the Bulls.

Diogo Andrade - A Short Profile

Portugese winger Diogo Andrade played 45 minutes in Hereford United's friendly at Telford last night. The 24 year old Diogo Manuel Bebiano Cepeda David de Andrade was born in Lisbon and had some initial success whilst with his first club Belenenses gaining caps at various youth levels.

However he decided to try his luck in England and had a trial with Bournemouth in summer 2004 and after a couple of apperances in friendlies was given a short term contract.

His first game was a Carling Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers when he came on as a substitute. However he failed to impress sufficiently and was sent on loan to Dorchester making 17 starts and scoring four goals. However he suffered an injury and returned to Portugal.

Later that summer he returned to England and had a trial with Gillingham then one with Bristol Rovers. But another injury hampered his chances. Then he had a trial at Carlisle.

In December he joined French club Lavel on a six month deal. He played for their reserves and did well enough to get some first team games. However at the end of the season he quit the club and returned to Portugal and signed for Portimonense.

Unfortunately the club had financial problems and in January 2007 he moved on again, this time to UTA Arad where he signed a three year deal. Again injuries hampered his progress and he was loaned out to Vihren Sandanski in Bulgaria.

Problems with his contract led to another move in October 2009 this time to Farul Constanţa where he made 13 starts.

Connor really excited to join Hereford

Goal-keeper Dan Connor has said that he felt he could not take his career any further in Ireland so when the chance came along to move to Hereford United he was really excited

The 29-year-old had joined the Saints from Cork City following the Rebel club’s demise. But he couldn’t break into the first team as Gary Rogers has made an impressive start to the season. Connor was linked with a move to Darlington prior to joining the Saints. But he couldn’t get Cork City – who were days from collapsing – to sign off on the deal.

However, he recently joined Hereford and agreed a two-year deal.

"I’ve taken my career as far as I could in Ireland," said Connor.

"Football in Ireland has been going through a well publicised off- field crisis in recent years.

"I’ve been looking to get back into the Football League in England for a while now.

"When my agent told me that Simon Davey (Hereford boss) was interested I was really excited. I’m still only 29 and, as a keeper, I’ve my best years still to come."

Connor has made a good start at his new club and looks as though he will challenge Adam Bartlett for a regular starting place.
