Swindon Face Winding-Up Order

Swindon Town have been served with a winding-up order for the second time this year.

In January, HM Revenues & Customs issued a winding-up order against the Club after it defaulted on repayments on a £600,000 VAT bill. That time the Club were bailed out by their major shareholder, and a property developer keen on redeveloping the County Ground. The new winding-up order comes from the Inland Revenue despite the Swindon Deputy Assistant Chairman, Mark Devlin, denying there is a problem.

Devlin told the Swindon Advertiser: "Money is being put in place to pay this, as was always intended, by 18 October. We had an agreement with the Government agency that thought we were adhering to that agreement. As far as we understand it everything is fine and dandy."

Swindon attracted barely 4,500 fans to their last home match, and are believed to be losing over £10,000 a week. Drastic budget cuts in the summer brought down their overheads from a break-even of 7,000 fans a match last season, but a run of seven straight defeats has seen attendances slump even further as several high profile players departed during the summer.
