The Bulls entertain Swindon Town for the second time this season in tomorrow's Johnstones Paint Trophy match.
The 1-1 draw between the sides a month ago was watched by a 4,000 gate. Half that will be expected for the competition that is still regarded as a joke by many. Graham Turner has indicated his intention to have a crack at Wembley and is likely to name a reasonable side partly due to the rules dictating the number of squad players that can now be fielded.
The Bulls will look for some respite from the recent League toils in a competition that they have not progressed greatly in for some time. The early years of the originally named Associate Members Cup - harking back to the days when only the top two divisions were considered to be proper League members - saw the Bulls reach an area Final and two semi-finals despite being one of the lesser lights in the competition. One of those semi-finals was against Graham Turner's Wolves side in 1989, when the newly promoted Wolves side carried off the trophy at Wembley after a hotly contested match at Edgar Street.
Swindon boss Maurice Malpas is yet to fully win over the Robins' fans with his management of the side and a failure to win in six games is unsettling the natives. A nasty set of accounts show a club deep in debt so a decent cup run, with several hundred thousand pounds on offer to a Wembley finalist, would be welcome to the County Ground coffers.
Hereford United vs Swindon Town, Edgar Street, Tuesday October 7th, 7.45pm.
