News Round Up

The sentencing this morning of drug dealer Curtis Warren has fuelled speculation over Chester's future. Stephen Vaughan was arrested in 1998 over links to Warren, but was never charged, and continued speculation as to where the money to run the club was coming from has always been denied by Vaughan.

Warren once claimed to own Barrow's Holker Street ground, at the same time as Vaughan was chairman, and Vaughan held a minutes silence at the Deva Stadium for Colin Smith. Smith was Warren's 'right hand man' who was gunned down in November 2007, and was described by Vaughan as a 'major benefactor' of the club. Police believe that up to £185million is missing from Warren's illegal dealings.

Crewe have confirmed that assistant boss Steve Davis will remain with the club, with Dario Gradi suggesting a personality clash was behind the removal of former boss Gudjon Thordarson. Notts County are now claimed to be eyeing up Iain Dowie for a Director of Football role that will see Sven Goran Ericsson move further up the boardroom chain. Chairman Peter Trembling has hit out at the press coverage of the takeover, calling it 'scandalous' and saying the investors are demoralised.

The postponement of Accrington's JPT match with Shrewsbury last night has likely cost them several thousand towards their survival fund. The game has been rearranged for October 20th, a week of Champions League football, with their deadline day eight days later. Their fundraising efforts appear to have stalled, with the local press reporting that the fund is at £81,419 - a figure it has been stuck near for the past week.
