Peterborough United are to sell their squad to local businesses for an afternoon on October 12th to raise money for the Adam Stansfield Football Foundation. Two other charities are also expected to benefit from their gesture. If all 24 of the squad are 'purchased' they could raise over £6,000.
Striker Aaron Mclean is responsible for the idea which he took to manager Gary Johnson who signed Stansfield from non-league in 2001.
"We seem to have a lot of free time as footballers, with our afternoons free," Mclean told the Posh OS.
"It's just something different. Our fans spend their hard earned money watching us, so it's a good chance for us to give something back by doing what they do.
"I'm excited about it. At the moment, we don't know what we will be doing, so we'll have to see what businesses come forward.
"I knew Adam from playing against him and him passing away made me think I wanted to do something for him, and then also for the other charities too."
Manager Johnson is delighted with the plan.
"They came up to me with the idea when I'd just come back from Adam's funeral and it warmed the cockles in my heart," he said.
"When something happens like that then football is a great vehicle for raising money, especially for these three great causes. It's great that they came up with the idea to give something back and I'm very proud of them. Adam was a wonderful lad and a great footballer and I'm sad he's gone so soon."
