News Round Up

Lincoln's signing of Romanian striker Adrian Patulea, who was spotted running around the training ground with his naked girlfriend on his back, looks dead after his Romanian side demanded a €50,000 fee. 24 year old Patuela, who scored a hat-trick in his debut trial game, is trying to raise the money himself.

Altrincham have reacted angrily after Woking accused Alty fans of bricking their own team coach at Kingfield during their recent game. Cards fans and onlookers blamed the incident on Premier League supporting people who had no game that day, but an official statement from Woking pins the blame for the £4,000 of damage on the 100 or so Alty fans that made the trip.

Cambridge have failed in their latest bid to buy back their Abbey Stadium home. The £4million offer, more than twice the price paid by current owners Bideawhile, was rejected. Carlisle have claimed they made a club record £150,000 bid for Reading bound Irish striker David Mooney. He joined the Royals for a £300,000 deal.

Leicester have given veteran defender Chris Powell a short term contract. The 38 year old has started over 700 games since turning pro 21 years ago. Ex-Bull Andy Moran has joined Colwyn Bay on a months loan from Fleetwood.

30 Years Of Walls

In one of their snippets of information, the Daily Mail reminds today that it has been 30 years since Bulls coach John Trewick left his mark on architectural reviews by passing comment on the Great Wall of China.

The BBC documentary World About Us, which Trewick maintains misrepresented his joke comment, is - fortunately - not repeated anywhere near as often as a certain Ronnie Radford moment by the BBC, but journalists continue to remember it. Daily Mirror reporter Mike Walters, in his Olympic Blog titled The Great Wally Of China, is the latest to reminisce:

Three decades have passed since Ron Atkinson led West Bromwich Albion on a pioneering end-of-season trip to China and their hosts organised a photo opportunity for the squad which has become part of tourist folklore.

As we all know, footballers can be a dull lot by nature, but although the trip was optional, Big Ron thought his players would jump at the chance to enjoy a spot of culture at one of the seven wonders of the world.

Surprisingly, however, midfielder John Trewick decided to stay behind, even though such works outings were a rare treat for western tourists in a country hermetically sealed to outsiders by Communist rulers who operated under the maxim that if you open the windows, you let in the flies.

Now, Trewick was a tidy passer with an eye for goal, and his worthy career included winning the League Cup with Oxford 23 years ago, while Hereford have won two promotions under his tutelage as coach.

But his trite reason for giving the Great Wall of China a miss remains one of the classic one-liners of his era: "Once you've seen one wall, you've seen them all."

Go to the back of the class, John, and see me after school. So the Kremlin wall, the Wailing Wall, the walls of Jericho and the Great Wall of China all deserve to be bracketed with Walls ice cream, do they?

Trewick's incomparable comment sprang readily to mind on Sunday, when I ventured into the hills north-west of Beijing to watch Nicole Cooke claim Britain's first gold medal at the Olympics in the women's cycling road race.

In teeming rain of biblical proportions, Cooke took the chequered flag with a gutsy sprint uphill over the last 400 metres along the Badaling section of the Great Wall - one of the most exotic venues imaginable for any Olympic race.

And repeatedly the same thought ran through my head: How can anyone in their right mind spurn the chance to take in one of the GREAT attractions and grab snapshots a cut above your average photo album?

Even when it was raining stair-rods, and Cooke was going for gold in conditions better-suited to canoeing, the walkway snaking over mountain tops and into the clouds was a truly breathtaking sight.

In Britain, we perform cartwheels about Jubilee Line extensions and pedestrian bridges across the Thames, but this was a feat of engineering - more than 1,000 years old - to make a bricklayer's eyes water.

Upon West Brom's return from the far east, an eager radio reporter asked Big Ron if he had managed to see the Great Wall of China on his travels.

Quick as a flash, Atkinson - never slow with a quip from the Bob Monkhouse school of comedy - replied: "See it? Did we SEE the Great Wall of China? Mate, we practised bending free-kicks around it."

Cooke will be back at the scene of her golden triumph on Wednesday for the women's time trial. West Brom fans, meanwhile, will hope Arsenal's defences will be easier to crack than the Great Wall on the opening day of the Premier League season this weekend.

If anyone from the BBC is reading, and has access to the archive, Youtube is missing the classic clip.

'Turner' impressed by Ronaldo's Girlfriend

'Graham Turner' has commented that Cristiano Ronaldo's new girlfriend would be welcome at Edgar Street.

It seems the 'Hereford United MD' has been reading the Daily Mail and must have been impressed with pictures of Letitizia Filippin playing with a football on a beach in Italy.

In a comment below the article 'Turner' says:

I reckon she is better than Ronaldo..does she want to come and play for Hereford as we need all the help we can get from the supporters!

- Graham Turner MD Hereford United, Hereford, 22/8/2008 15:13

The Mail article says that Talented Letitizia Filippi, 30, seems to have learned a trick or two from the skilful footballer as she revealed her brilliant 'keepy-uppy' skills as she enjoyed a day out with friends.

Letizia demonstrated her eye-catching ball control while playing with a pink ball while dressed in a skimpy mother of pearl embellished bikini.

There are more 'Eaglepress' pictures of Letitizia on the Daily Mail website.

Willo look forward to Hereford Game

It looks as though former Bull Andy Williams will be the Bristol Rovers squad to play Hereford United tomorrow. Interviewed for the Official Rovers website, Willo looks forward to the game.

"My dad is involved in the youth team, and some of the backroom staff are the same, but most of the players left around the same sort of time that I did.

"It will be good to see a few faces, but I'm a Bristol Rovers player now and I'm looking forward to Saturday and kicking the season off with three points.

"Hereford did well last season, it's not easy at all to get out of League Two, and they deserved their promotion over the course of the year.

"They've found it hard to adjust in the first couple of match, and they will be disappointed with the start they've made. But we're disappointed too, and we want to get things going with three points on Saturday."

Willo has been a substitute in Rovers first three games.

"I'd like to be involved, and if I am then I'll be ready and hopefully in the right place to score a goal or two. There's a lot of competition for places up front at the moment, and every striker here knows that you have to make the most of every chance.

"As a team I think we've shown signs of progression so far this season, but we need to take the next step forward and win the game this weekend."

Webb Future "In The Balance"

Luke Webb's future at the club is in the balance after a further injury setback, Graham Turner told the official website.

Confirming news of a further injury problem as reported earlier for the talented youngster, Turner admitted Webb's future at the club was in doubt after he felt the injury again after a practice match on Tuesday: "We have carried out our contractual obligations, we have to pay him until he's fit. He was declared fit Monday and Tuesday. He's feeling some pain again so it looks as though he's got a deep rooted problem.

"We feel very much for him, he's a smashing lad, and he's worked hard for us. He's got to take stock of what he wants to do now with the future, but it could entail more surgery if necessary. it could be he might have to take time out of professional football."

Turner also noted that Karl Broadhurst would return to training next week, and that Sam Oji came through Friday training OK after missing the rest of the week and is likely to play tomorrow.

Bristol Rovers Reminder!

This is a reminder to anyone wanting to enter the Prediction League for this weekend's tie at Bristol Rovers.

To enter, please send your final score and attendance predictions along with your chosen username to bullsnewspredictions@hotmail.co.uk . All entries must be received by 2.30pm on Saturday 23rd August.

Look what happened to Walsall says Turner

Hereford United are yet to obtain any points this season but manager Graham Turner has reminded supporters that Walsall started badly last season after being promoted and finished relatively well.

Turner said that Walsall went several games without many points.

"Then they started to play and finished up in the top half of the table.

"There is a long way to go yet. There is plenty of scope for us to improve.

"When you start off with two games and do not get a point, you are going to be under pressure.

"The players have to have the nerve and the bottle to deal with it.

"It is a testing time for everyone within the club and the only way we will put it right is with hard work. We should have got something on the board by now but they are all big games now."

Travel by Coach to Bristol

There are still a few spaces available on coaches going to the Bristol Rovers match tomorrow.

As tickets can be purchased at the ground, just a phone call to one of the usual operators should be sufficent to reserve a seat, although HUISA would prefer payment when booking.

HUISA: 08442 76 1939

HUMADS: 01684 572945 or 07958 176 937

FUNBUS: 07812 144831

Turner still hoping to add to Squad

Graham Turner has just over another week to add to his squad before the transfer window closes.

“There are several players I’m looking to bring in,” Turner told the Worcester News. “There have been all summer.

“We are talking to clubs, players and agents. It is just a case of getting it all signed.”

Should the Hereford United manager be unsuccessful in bringing in enough players before September 1st, he will be able to use the loan system from a week later.

Meanwhile former Hereford United striker Andy Williams may be unable to play for Bristol Rovers tomorrow against his former club. He sustained an injury in training last Monday. Another former Bull, Ryan Green, will definitely miss out. He hasn't quite recovered from a long term achilles injury.

News Round Up

Chester owner Stephen Vaughan has admitted he has held talks with former manager Mark Wright over returning to the club: "I have held preliminary discussions with Mark. We discussed possible financial investment into the club and also the possibility of him joining the board of directors." Wright was a spectator at the midweek reserve match with Everton.

Ex-Bull Alex Jeannin has spoken of his love for England: "Football in England is so big. It's like a religion. People here love football. It's not the same in France. Even some teams in the second division in France don't get the same big crowds as Mansfield." Crewe are giving a trial to Ghanaian defender Ransford Addo, the brother of PSV star Eric.

Northampton have signed Wolves defender Mark Little on a three month loan spell as temporary cover for the departed Gabor Gyepes. Yeovil have signed Crewe's transfer listed midfielder Gary Roberts on loan until the end of the year. Leyton Orient have signed Wigan's teenage defender Luke Ashworth on a months loan after ex-Bull Tamika Mkandawire was ruled out for two weeks.

The carcass stripping goes on at the former Rotherham company. Up for sale now are a range of turnstiles and barriers previously destined for installation in their half finished stand, all painted in Millers red but never used.

Gasheads confident they can defeat Bulls

Bristol Rovers manager Paul Trollope has been looking forward to the visit of Hereford United to the Memorial Ground tomorrow.

"It's a game we're looking to win, it's a game we're confident we can win, and it's a game we've got to make sure we do win," said Trollope in an interview on Rovers official website.

"Sometimes the opposition dictates what you can and can't do at times, but we are at home this week and the onus is on us to go out and play, and we will do that. We want to pass the ball quickly, play with width, and try to hurt Hereford with our strengths.

"Graham is a good manager, he's taken them up through two divisions, and they have some very good players.

"They are a settled club with a settled way of playing, which is good for them in terms of momentum, given the recent success they've had.

"They will be disappointed to have lost their opening two league games, and this weekend they will be looking to take the points.

"But we're looking for our first win of the season, and we will have no negative thoughts at all. It's about us producing the standard of football we know we can, and going out and winning the game.

"We're ready for them. We know they will be organised and will try to pass the ball, but it's up to us to make sure we impose our game.

"We've got to pass the ball well on a good surface, and make sure we defend right, and take our chances when they come along."

Meanwhile Jo Kuffour is unlikely to feature for Rovers even if he is signed from Bournemouth in time. He is said to be suffering from flu.

Finally Luke Webb, the young Hereford United mid-fielder, is reported to have suffered a recurrance of the injury who has kept him out of first team action for several months.

Advertising Boards at Hereford United

It was noticable that at Hereford United's first home game of the season, there were several spaces not yet filled by advertising boards.

Sometimes called perimeter boards, the cost of these has risen over recent years at Edgar Street no doubt to reflect the move up from the Conference to League One and the greater TV exposure that should bring.

The current cost of boards at Hereford United is as follows:

Ground Level Site £1100.00
Middle Level Site £660.00

These charges are the same for any position at the ground and VAT is not charged.

If all the 'board' space (assuming a board to be around 18ft by 3ft) is sold at the published prices then the revenue to the club could be at least £80,000.

In the 2006/07 season (the last figures available) the combined income from advertising boards and programme advertising was £56,000. Programme advertising probably came to about £10,000 so the income from the boards was around £46,000.

Comparison with other League One clubs is difficult as not all publish their prices.

One that does is Swindon Town. Their charges range from £500 plus VAT for crowd facing boards and up to £3,000 plus VAT for prominent TV facing sites.

At Northampton charges start at £750, no mention of VAT here, to £2,500 for the best sites. At Tranmere rates start at £1,000 and peak at £1,500.

This quick comparison suggests charges at Edgar Street for advertising boards appears reasonable particularly for those boards behind the goals.

For more details about advertising at Hereford United please telephone 08442 76 1939

Mkandawire suffers another injury

Tamika Mkandawire faces missing a couple of games for Leyton Orient as a scan has revealed a slight tear of his groin. The former Hereford United captain had a hernia operation near the end of last season.

“Tam has been struggling again with his groin so we sent him for scans," said manager Martin Ling.

“They have revealed a slight tear, although the good news is that it isn't related to the operation he has just had.

“We are not sure exactly what has caused this latest problem, but it maybe a case of where he might of been trying to overcompensate in a certain area because of the original injury.

“The bad blow is that he could be out now for between ten days and two weeks, which is a massive loss to us but hopefully this time we can resolve matters once and for all.”

Mkandawire played against Hereford United on the opening day of the season.

Oji faces Fitness Test

Sam Oji is a slight doubt for Saturday's away game at Bristol Rovers.

The Hereford United central defender has an ankle injury and has missed some training sessions this week.

Should he fail his fitness test, youngster Gary Breen might come into the squad.

Karl Broadhurst and Luke Webb will also miss the game with their longer-term injury problems.

Turner looks for more aggression from the Bulls

Graham Turner is looking for more aggression from his players.

In his column for the Hereford Times Turner admits that last Saturday's opponents Yeovil Town showed more fight than the Bulls.

"I do see the need for more aggression about the team in pressing the ball and more aggression about the team in winning our headers and tackles.

"Yeovil, at times, gave us a lesson in that.

"When the ball was there to be won, they went right through their tackles and made sure they won them."

Turner said that most of the goals scored against the Bulls so far this season were preventable.

"We have to learn to be more difficult to play against and we have to be more ruthless when the ball is there to be won.

"I have always been an advocate of being disciplined as a team and not conceding free-kicks. They just allow the opposition to bring up the big central defenders and pump balls into the box.

"On the basis that a high percentage of goals are scored from set-pieces, those are preventable."

News Round Up

Ex-Bull Nicky Nicolau has left Grimsby after rejecting non-contract terms in favour of seeking a permanent deal elsewhere. He is understood to be heading to Gillingham for a trial but is not included in the Gills' squad for a reserve match today. Walsall have released trialist Nick Chadwick after he was deemed 'too similar' to their existing forward line, but are showing interest in former Eire international defender Gary Breen.

Northampton received £320,000 for selling defender Gabor Gyepes to Cardiff, according to the Daily Mail. MK Dons are understood to have finally recieved a bid from Blackburn for skipper Keith Andrews. He was left out of the weekend game with Northampton, but the bid is claimed to be only £500,000 rather than the touted £2million.

Swindon can't continue their squad rebuilding until they offload their surplus players. Boss Maurice Malpas has had enquiries for Blair Sturrock and Michael Pook, but the interested clubs have to move their own unwanted players before they can deal and Malpas expects to have no movement before the deadline.

Leicester have loaned goalkeeper Conrad Logan, who spent last season at Stockport, to Luton until January. The Foxes are giving a trial to former England defender Chris Powell. Southend have signed winger Hal Robson-Kanu from Reading on a months loan. The 19 year old had three months at Roots Hall last season, scoring three times in eight appearances.

Ex-Bull Danny Thomas is one of seven players up for the North West Player of the Year award. Colchester have ruled out a move for Bournemouth striker Jo Kuffour, leaving Bristol Rovers as the only known suitor.

Connell may move to Bournemouth

With the transfer deadline looming, many managers are trying to beef up their squads whilst watching the purse-strings.

Bournemouth are no exception.

Co-owner Paul Barker has stressed that whilst the sale of Jo Kuffour to Bristol Rovers would bring in much needed cash, he doesn't want to let him go without bringing in another striker.

That striker may be former Hereford United player Alan Connell who is currently with Brentford.

Connell would be returning to Deans Court for a second spell if the deal goes ahead.

Since leaving Bournemouth he has scored 27 goals in 119 appearances (32 from the bench) for Torquay, Hereford and Brentford.

Bristol Tickets can be Purchased on Matchday

Bristol Rovers will sell Hereford United supporters tickets at the gate next Saturday.

The change of plan has come, it is thought, because sales for the game have been slow.

The revised arrangments could mean that a few more Hereford United fans might travel to the game.

However, according to Bristol Rovers, tickets will cost £2 more on the day than the early bird price.

Meanwhile it looks as though fuel prices are starting to rise again which may have an effect on travelling support to away matches.

Diesel has been available as low as 119.9p/litre but wholesale increases are expected to push up the pump price by at least 2p/litre in the next few days.

Can the Robins afford Benjamin?

Whilst Trevor Benjamin is hoping for a contract at Cheltenham Town, the club may not be able to afford the ex-Hereford United striker. Yesterday the Robins had several players take part in a reserve game against Swansea City including Benjamin.

"I have spoken to all of the players and they are prepared to keep coming in and training with us," said manager Keith Downing as reported by the Western Daily Press.

"I still need to consider the budget and we will make decisions on all of them in the next week or so.

"Some of the trialists are senior players so they demand reasonable money."

Of the trialists, ex-Swindon Town Andy Nicolas looks the most likely to be offered a deal.

"He has shown a good attitude and is a strong boy who knows how to defend," commented Downing.

"I have to look at the situation but, again, his future will be dictated by the constraints I am working under."

Meanwhile Benjamin, who has agreed non-contract terms with Gainsborough Trinity, has also spoken to the press.

"I am disappointed not to have got a club over the summer – but I think that is the way football is going at the moment.

"It is not as easy these days because clubs at this level are tightening their belts, but that's life and you just have to get on with it.

"I need more games now to try to regain my match fitness. It will take a couple of weeks of running and a few games to catch up with everybody else."

Southend Away Tickets On Sale Friday

Hereford United are reporting that they will be selling tickets for the away trip to Southend from Friday onwards.

The early bird tickets are £2 less than pay on the day prices for one of the longer trips of the season on September 13th. The club have a limited number of 'family' tickets for £20 which will admit one adult and child. Prices of other tickets are:

By Car
From Hereford, you have a choice of going via Gloucester (M5) or Monmouth (Newport or Chepstow M4).

If travelling on the M5, leave the M5 at J15 and join the M4 east (sign London). Leave the M4 at J19 and join the M32 (sign Bristol). After just over 3 miles, leave the M32 at J2 then, at the roundabout, take the third exit (sign Horfield and Southmead). Follow this road through a division and a roundabout (third exit) following signs for Memorial Stadium into Muller Road. After 1.4 miles you will reach a signal controlled cross road. Turn left into Filton Avenue where you will find the ground on your left.

For those travelling via Monmouth and the M4, simply follow the above directions from J19. You are reminded of the Severn Bridge crossing fee (Car £5.30, Minibus £10.60, Coach £15.90) when returning home.

The Bristol official site suggests that street parking around the ground is relatively easy although parking in Filton Avenue itself might be difficult unless you arrive a couple of days in advance. Muller Road and Gloucester Road together with their side streets are recommended. Distance, dependent on route, is around 65 miles. You should allow one and a half hours. Postcode is BS7 0BF.

Alehouses
For recent games, Bristol Police directed thirsty fans to The Gloucester Arms which is on Gloucester Road about 400 yards before the turning to the stadium. I would imagine (unconfirmed) that the same Alehouse would be available on Friday for pre-match refreshments. The Pub is a sizeable unit with Sky TV and offers a good range of fluid including at least one real ale. I will post an update if I hear any changes from Bristol police. "The Annexe" In Nevil Road usually has a good range of real ales and is generally considered to be friendly. It can be found by following signs for the County Cricket Ground. The Inn on The Green can be found on Gloucester Road although good behaviour is expected. Other wise there is no shortage of Pubs in the area although Pirates fans regard the Wellington and the John Cobat as home Pubs.
DON’T FORGET YOUR TICKET!

News Round Up

Northampton have sold defender Gabor Gyepes to Cardiff for an undisclosed fee. The 27 year old missed two years with previous club Wolves and joined the Cobblers in January. Leeds midfielder Jonathan Douglas has rejected a loan move to Southend. The former Leeds captain is no longer in Gary McAllister's plans.

Chester have invited veteran striker Wayne Allison to assist manager Simon Davies. The 39 year old has UEFA 'A' and 'B' coaching badges. Bristol Rovers may have to wait for Jo Kuffour even if they win the chase for the ex-Arsenal man. Colchester have expressed an interest in the striker but the Cherries want a replacement lined up before they sell the £75,000 rated player.

Carlisle have signed Bristol City defender Richard Keogh on a two year deal. The 22 year old, who had a loan spell at Brunton Park last season, joins for an undisclosed sum. Walsall are giving a trial to striker Nick Chadwick. The former Everton trainee scored only ten times in 83 games for Plymouth after a £250,000 move and was released in the summer.

Ex-Bull Nicky Nicolau has left Grimsby having failing to obtain a contract.

Lines looks forward to Hereford Visit

Bristol Rovers midfielder Chris Lines has said that Rovers need to make the Memorial Stadium a fortress. They lost their first home game against Carlisle.

"Lennie (Lawrence) said after the game that our performance in the second half was the best we'd played so far this season," Lines told the Rovers official website.

"We need to maintain that level, and play like that against Hereford on Saturday.

"That's a massive game for us now, they haven't won a game this season, but we want to go out there and win - and win well. It's important on a number of levels to get our first win under our belts, and we know how big this match is in terms of shaping our season early on.

"It's very important that this season we get our home form back to what it was a couple of seasons ago. Teams used to be afraid to come to our place, we rarely lost there, but last season it was nothing like that.

"Hereford have just come up from League Two, and they'll be expecting a tough game. We need to make sure we carry on from last weekend and produce a performance that wins us the match and the three points."

Uncertainty over McClenahan's Future

There is uncertainty over what team Trent McClenahan will be playing for next. The former Hereford United defender has returned to his native Australia after playing for the Olyroos in the Olympic Games.

He had been linked with the Newcastle Jets but manager Gary van Egmond says he is not on his shopping list. He expects a rival A-League side to sign him.

"Trent McClenahan won't be signing with us," Egmond told au.fourfourtwo.com

"I have heard he is keen to come back to play in Australia but to be honest I think we're pretty much done and dusted when it comes to the full-back positions in the squad.

"It'll be interesting to see what happens (with McClenahan) though."

Breen play second half for Republic

Hereford United's Gary Breen played the whole of the second half for the Republic of Ireland in their under 21 friendly in Austria this evening.

The game was drawn 1-1.

The Irish took the lead in the 15th minute and looked as though they would win the match until Austria equalised in stoppage time.

How to have bigger gates by Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers have decided to have bigger official attendances at their games this season even if there might be less supporters watching.

It's all down to counting all the season tickets sold in every gate.

If, for example, Rovers have sold 2,000 season tickets but only 1,000 season ticket holders turn out for a game, the club will use the 2,000 figure.

It appears that this practice has been adopted by some other clubs.

Breen expected to feature for Republic

Hereford United's young central defender Gary Breen is expected to play some part in the Republic of Ireland's under-23 international in Austria this evening.

Although Breen will start on the bench, manager Don Givens has said that all six substitutes will be used.

Ex-Bull Watch

A number of former Bulls were in reserve team action this afternoon.

Trevor Benjamin had a hand in the first goal, and played the full game, as Cheltenham beat Swansea 4-0. Former trialist Alistair John also assisted in the first and scored the second while another former trialist, Ryan Burge, had a hand in the fourth goal. Lionel Ainsworth played 76 minutes of Watford's 4-0 win over Leyton Orient, terrorising the Orient full back and having several shots saved.

One other name of note is that of Southend striker Matt Harrold. The early summer rumoured Bulls target scored the only goal of the game against Northampton.

Warnock gets the broom out

Following their less than convincing performance in the Carling Cup against The Bulls, Crystal Palace are looking to move up to five players as Neil Warnock seeks to freshen his squad.

Officially on the list go 29 year old right winger Paul Ifill and 28 year old midfielder Carl Fletcher while strikers Shefki Kuqi and Dougie Freedman join 23 year old midfielder Ben Watson in the "circularised as available" category.
