Huddersfield Laugh At Cheap Leeds

Ken Bates' penny-pinching at Leeds United has reached a new depth.

After putting the club into Administration to avoid their debts the millionaire Monaco resident has now sent Huddersfield their hotel bill for last Saturday's derby match - claiming the Noon kick-off necessitated an overnight stay.

Huddersfield have laughed the bill off, with the two club grounds just 16 miles and 25 minutes apart. Town CEO Nigel Glibbens told their official site: "Leeds have told us that the 12.00 kick off 'necessitated' an overnight stay because their players 'would have been leaving home at an unreasonable hour in terms of match preparation time' and therefore under Football League Regulations we should pay.

"Leeds' claim is as sad as it is laughable, but cannot be dismissed as they intend to deduct the cash from what they owe us from match ticket sales. We are awaiting further assistance from the Football League. The behaviour of Leeds is clearly against both the letter of the regulations and more importantly the spirit of the game and does nothing for Leeds' reputation at all."

Leeds have retaliated, claiming that Huddersfield illegally used match footage taken by the club in the reverse fixture and that the Terriers wanted to charge the Whites £5,000 to video last Saturday's match. Leeds say the hotel bill is £1,100 and claim they did not go to print about the actions of the Terriers as they considered the matters to be 'private'.

The Football League regulation that Leeds are claiming under states: 24.6 Should a kick-off at 12.00 noon or earlier necessitate the Away Club incurring overnight hotel expenses, the Away Club shall be entitled to claim the hotel expenses incurred (at the rate as determined by the Executive from time to time, per person per night for a party not exceeding twenty in number) against the gross gate, any dispute to be determined by the Executive.

Turner is the 'Loan King of League One'

The Hereford United manager Graham Turner is now known as the 'Loan King of League One' according to the Peterborough press. It is because of his success in bringing in loan players to Edgar Street without breaking the bank.

"We have prided ourselves in running this club as a going concern. We had a little bit of money to spend during the January transfer window, but I would never do anything to put this club in any sort of financial jeopardy," said Turner.

"We've actually had bad luck with our loan players as many of them picked up injuries, but we've managed to find some good ones now.

"Goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi was exceptional against Leeds. He made a fantastic penalty save and he also came and caught crosses so for an 18 year-old he was outstanding.

"Godwin Antwi only met the rest of the side 90 minutes before kick off so he was outstanding as well, but the whole team were magnificent.

"We are still in a dogfight but we have shown a lot of character in the last couple of games. We have thoroughly deserved the six points we collected.

"It's a vital month for us now as the games are coming thick and fast. We had to start winning and now we have to carry on winning.

"Our performances in the first half of the season weren't as bad as results suggested. We played well at places like Peterborough and yet came away with nothing.

"But our confidence is up now and I am sure we will now stay up. There are certainly four worse teams than us in the division."

Chester Ready To Face His Mates

Peterboro's Man Utd loanee James Chester has told the local press he will find it odd playing against Bulls duo Febian Brandy and Sam Hewson:

"It's going to be strange playing against them. We joined United at the same time and we've gone on loan to League One sides at the same time. They're both friends of mine. They are great lads, but I want to be the happy one tomorrow night. It won't be easy for me because they are good players.

"I will come right up against Febian and he's a strong, quick striker. He's not the biggest, but he's powerful. Sam is really good on the ball and if he gets time to play he could cause us problems."

Trewick looks for third win on the trot.

In advance of tomorrow's game against Peterborough United, John Trewick has told the Worcester News that he is hopeful of a third successive win for the Bulls.

“When you look at the league table after the two wins against Cheltenham and Leeds, it looks a lot happier and we are closing the gap on the teams above us," said the Hereford United coach.

“We have always believed we had a chance of staying in the division but two wins on the trot will give, if it was needed, the players that extra belief that they can make a good go of it and beat anybody.

“Peterborough are a good side and have some fine players — Craig Mackail-Smith, Aaron Mclean and George Boyd to name three.

“They are not around the top of the table for nothing but, if we can beat Oldham and Leeds at home in the style we did, there’s no reason, if we show the same qualities, why we can’t beat Peterborough.”

Trewick confirmed that recent loan signing Godwin Antwi will start in the centre of defence.

“Godwin came in at late notice, slotted straight into the team and did a fine job. He was part of a team that kept a clean sheet,” he said.

Sir Alex can't be present at Edgar Street Tomorrow

The game at Edgar Street between Hereford United and Peterborough United tomorrow might have given Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson the perfect excuse to return to one of the grounds he sent a team to under his management many years ago.

With his son, Darren, in charge at Peterborough United and loan players from Old Trafford expected to feature for both clubs, Sir Alex would have had plenty to take note should he have been able to attend.

Unfortunately Manchester United are at home to Blackburn Rovers tomorrow with a tea-time kick-off.

It was on Saturday January 28th 1990 that Manchester United came to Edgar Street for a fourth round FA Cup game with Sir Alex in charge. He wasn't too pleased with the muddy pitch which made the tie hard work for his players. It took them 84 minutes before Clayton Blackmore scored the only goal of the game.

Although he had been at Old Trafford for nearly four years, many of his signings hadn't quite reached the expectations of the fans, and the manager was reportedly on the verge of being sacked, with many believing that defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Third Round would seal his fate. A 56th-minute goal from Mark Robins won that match for United and started them on a cup run, which included the Hereford game, that would take them all the way to the final at Wembley, where they beat Crystal Palace 1–0 in a replay after a 3–3 draw in the original match. And Sir Alex has been in charge ever since.

Back to the present. At Peterborough they currently have one player on loan from Manchester United, James Chester.

And at Hereford there are two from Old Trafford, Sam Hewson and Febian Brandy.

Good reason for Sir Alex to look at the match reports and maybe remember that cup game at Edgar Street 19 years ago played in front of 13,777 fans.

Michael D'Agostino signs one month contract with Bulls

Canadian U20 International and former Blackpool right winger Michael D'Agostino has joined Hereford United on an initial one month contract.

D'Agostino left Blackpool towards the end of December by mutual consent in a bid to find first team football. After impressing the coaching staff at Hereford United, D'Agostino says he is delighted to have the opportunity to restablish himself in League One.

"I have had a frustrating year so far but I am determined to end the season on a high. Hereford United have given me an opportunity and I the relish the chance to make a positive impact for the team and help them get out of relegation", said D'Agostino

D'Agostino will be available for selection against Peterborough United on Saturday.

It became known that he was training with the Bulls late last month and, as a free agent, could be signed at any time.

New Dates for Carlisle and Brighton Games.

The long trip to Carlisle will take place on Tuesday March 24th, kick-off 7.45pm.

This fixture takes place a week after another long mid-week away trip to Scunthorpe on March 17th.

The home game against Brighton will now be played on April 7th with a 7.45pm start.

Please note that for the Scunthorpe game the kick-off is said to be at 7.30pm on their official site and 7.45pm on the Hereford United OS. We will confirm the correct time in due course.

The table looks better - Turner

Graham Turner sounds confident that Hereford United can continue their move away from the bottom of the League One. With two wins this week he thinks there is every chance of escaping from the relegation zone.

"Yeovil did it with four consecutive wins and they were well out of the drop zone," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We were a little bit behind, we've needed these victories, we've just got to keep it going now.

"The table does look a little bit better because the gap between ourselves and safety is obviously not so great.

"We are more than capable of bridging that gap."

Not such good news about the three central defenders who were all injured at Whaddon Road last Saturday. Neither of them is expected to start against Peterborough United on Saturday.

What A Difference Five Years Makes

Mike Marggets contrasts the paths of both Hereford United and Leeds United which culminated in the League One game last Tuesday.

Five years ago this week in the Premiership, Leeds United played out a 1-1 draw with Manchester United in front of 67,774 people at Old Trafford; 225 miles to the South East, Hereford United were returning from the somewhat less inspiring surroundings of Stonebridge Road having secured an eventful 5-2 victory over Gravesend (as they were then) in front of 1,230 hardy souls on their way to the Conference play offs.

But as the two teams trotted out at Edgar Street this week both sets of supporters must have felt that 2004 was a few lifetimes ago.

The spectacular decline of Leeds has been well documented whilethe steady climb of Hereford has captured fewer headlines. Tuesday evening’s game provided a sharp focus on the contrasting fortunes of both teams and at the end of 90 minutes it genuinely looked as if the visitors were the team more familiar with the lower leagues.

It also underlined the uncertainty of the great game. Anyone who had suggested in 2004 that Hereford would, in the not too distant future, be meeting (and beating Leeds) in a League match would have been labelled a fool or a dreamer.

Dream on, Hereford fans…

News Round Up

Hartlepool have signed Doncaster striker Lewis Guy on a months loan. The former Newcastle trainee has started 21 games for the Championship side this season, scoring twice. Southend have frozen season ticket prices for next season, and introduced an easy payment plan. Walsall keeper Rene Gilmartin has threatened to leave the club if they retain the services of veteran Clayton Ince as he wants regular first team football.

Bournemouth have had further transfers blocked by the Football League as the uncertainty over their future continues. The club hopes speak to the FL to extend the loan of one player. Ex-Bull Moses Ashikodi is on trial with Luton. He scored in their 1-1 reserve draw with Luton yesterday.

Accrington have made their goalkeeping coach redundant but deny there is a major crisis at the club, saying they are just being prudent. Leicester have extended the loan of Nicky Adams to Rochdale for a second month. Tranmere have denied press reports claiming former chairman Peter Johnson is to resume the role. The club says programme notes from current chairman Lorraine Rogers have been taken out of context.

Yeovil have denied the appointment of player Terry Skiverton as their new manager was the cheap option. The club told their supporters liaison group all press statements about Russell Slade are being prepared by their legal team as they look to negotiate the severance on his remaining two years. Cheltenham have extended the loan of winger Nicholas Bignall for another month.

Humberside Police have failed in their bid have the next Lincoln-Grimsby derby played behind closed doors after the two clubs refused to move the kick-off from 3pm. Weymouth have been offered three players on loan for free by Peterboro. Boss Alan Lewer has told the press that nine of his players have attracted interest from other clubs, with the whole lot free to leave from Monday, while striker Stuart Beavon has already joined Wycombe.

Costly Exercise with Goalkeepers

In his weekly column for the Hereford Times, Graham Turner has noted the extra cost of goalkeepers this season at Edgar Street.

We had Darren Randolph who eventually refused to play for us and was returned to Charlton.

Matt Murray came in and looked an absolutely outstanding goalkeeper but lasted just two-and-a-half games.

Chris Weale took his place, played one game in our victory at Colchester and then broke a thumb in training.

Craig Samson has been struggling with a groin problem and so now we have brought in young Peter Gulacsi from Liverpool.

When I put the chairman’s hat on, bringing in five goalkeepers has been a very costly exercise and, in the cases of Murray and Weale, they were both on loan for a month so we have to pay for a month.

So the bills have been coming in thick and fast for our loan players from whom, so far this season, we have not had the best of value for no fault of their own.

Skiverton to Manage Yeovil

Yeovil Town have announced that Terry Skiverton has been appointed as their new manager. He takes over from Russell Slade.

Skiverton joined Yeovil in 1999 from Welling City and has recently been captain of the club.

Left-back Nathan Jones will become assistant manager after caretaker boss Steve Thompson left the club.

Hereford United play Yeovil at Huish Park on Tuesday March 3rd.

All Ticket for Posh Fans on Saturday

Next Saturday's League One game between Hereford United and Peterborough United has been all ticket for Posh supporters according to their OS.

Hereford United supporters can pay on the day.

Meanwhile Posh manager Darren Ferguson tried out a new system last night in the 1-1 draw at Tranmere.

"Lee Frecklington's arrival at the club has given us an extra attacking dimension as he allows us to play three in midfield and we looked very good. It's a system that I have wanted to play and now I have the players to try it," said Ferguson.

"It means playing Craig Mackail-Smith out wide, but he will still score goals from there as he proved last night."

No Money at Merthyr

Yet another football club has admitted that it is in financial difficulties. Merthyr Tydil may have to call off their next game on Saturday because of unpaid bills.

The Martyrs have been lucky to have a sugar daddy over the past ten years, but owner Wyn Holloway says he can not continue to put money in the club.

The water supply has been cut off at Merthyr's ground Penydarren Park and there are reports that the electric could be turned off on Friday.

Holloway, who says he has put in £800,000, has admitted that the situation 'is very serious'.

"The gates are low, sponsorship is non-existent because of the financial climate and I can't continue to keep putting money in," Holloway told welsh-premier.com

"When I came to the club 10 years ago, I never expected to get my money back because nobody makes a profit in football clubs.

"The trouble with certain fans is when I was begged 10 years ago to get involved, as long as my wallet is open they like me."

There is a supporters trust at Merthyr, Martyrs to the Cause, but it's not certain whether they can take over a club with pressing debts.

Meanwhile some Merthyr supporters were involved in scuffles at Chippenham last saturday. Police had to be called to restore order. Merthyr were defeated 1-0.

Finally it's nearly 23 years since Hereford United last played Merthyr Tydfil at Penydarren Park. The game was a Welsh Cup quarter final and the Bulls ran out 3-1 winners.

The Bulls last played Merthyr at Edgar Street in an FA Cup 2nd round tie. That was in December 1989 when the Bulls won 3-2. It was the season that Manchester United came to Edgar Street in the 4th round of the Cup. In front of some 13,377 the Bulls lost 1-0 thanks to a Clayton Blackmore late goal.

Crossley set to referee Posh Game

Phil Crossley from Kent is set to referee Saturday's League One game at Edgar Street where the visitors will be Peterborough United.

Following an Achilles injury whilst playing, Crossley took up refereeing at age 29 and soon made rapid steps through the Suburban, Isthmian and Panel Leagues until his promotion to the National List of referees in 2002.

Hereford United haven't met up with Crossley since early 2002 when he was in charge of games at both Dover, where the Bulls won 1-0 with a late goal from substitute Steve Piearce, and at Doncaster where the Bulls lost 4-0.

His only appearance at Edgar Street was in April 2001 when Hereford defeated Rushden and Diamonds 3-1.

That day Hereford secured their first league win in over two months beating top of the table Rushden & Diamonds by three goals to one. An early own goal by away captain Ray Warburton put the Bulls ahead, and then two in five minutes from Rob Elmes gave Hereford a 3-0 lead at the break.

R&D did get one back in the second half, an own goal from Tony James.

Preview: Bulls vs Peterboro

The Bulls entertain Peterboro on Saturday hoping for an almost unthinkable third straight win.

The MacAnthony era Peterboro are yet to lose to the Bulls. Since the sandcastle builder got involved with the Posh, the Bulls have scored only once in five games with Clint Easton scoring to secure the Bulls an unlikely point at London Road last season. Earlier this season the Posh were 2-0 winners at London Road, with Craig Mackail-Smith scoring both goals.

The Bulls have made it perfectly clear they will not go down without a fight after two straight wins. Godwin Antwi became the 32nd player utilised by the Bulls this season, but the appearance of youngster Craig Jones on the bench last night showed just how thin the available squad is at the moment with six players out injured, and a seventh - Andy Williams - unable to be selected due to loan rules.

Peterboro have a Plan B, apparently. Their ability to switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 during matches is claimed to be a useful addition to their arsenal by manager Darren Ferguson, but they've won only two of the last six matches and have lost ground in the chase for automatic promotion. 18 goal top scorer Mackail-Smith, who has six goals against the Bulls in his career so far, switches out wide when the formation is changed.

Hereford United vs Peterborough United, Edgar Street, Saturday 21st February, 3.00pm.

News Round Up

Micky Adams will meet with Brighton's board over the next few days to discuss his future. Having been brought in to improve on last season's narrow play-off miss the Seagulls are two points the wrong side of the relegation zone, and the last hope of silverware from a disasterous season ended last night with defeat at Luton in the Johnstones Paint Trophy.

Yeovil sacked Russell Slade due to a non-footballing reason compounded by his fall out with the board according to the local press. Conference sponsors Blue Square have paid out clients who backed Burton to win the title with their lead now 19 points. Huddersfield are giving a trial to forward Matt Jansen as he tries to resurrect his career.

The Cost of Policing Football

The chief constable of South Wales has raised the issue of the cost of policing events including football matches.

Barbara Wilding says that without funding increases, she would be forced to charge promoters of major events in Cardiff the full policing costs.

In an interview with BBC Wales she revealed that the recent Football League match between Cardiff and Swansea cost £250,000 to police, for which South Wales Police received only £25,000 from the event promoters.

In essence the interview was a plea for more funding for the South Wales police, but Ms Wilding stressed that if the force did not receive more funding it would have to either cut services or charge the full cost of policing events including football.

"If football clubs are not able to pay for the level of policing that we say is needed for that event on risk, it's all done on risk, then they may have to consider whether they can run the event in the circumstances.

"And that, of course, would have a hugh impact on the ecomony of hotels, shops, transport, the whole thing.

"Now we don't want to do that but we are being forced."

Meanwhile The Millennium Stadium's manager, Gerry Toms, has said that the stadium will only pay for policing inside the ground.

Mr Toms, a former chief superintendent with South Wales Police, said the force only had the right to charge sports grounds for the police inside the stadium not outside.

"We are already passing on the cost of the policing charges that we currently bear because those are part of the ticket prices," he said.

"The circular has not changed. It still clearly makes it evident that it can charge only for policing inside the ground and not outside the ground."

Hereford United have received invoices from West Mercia Police for policing costs in and around Edgar Street this season. Some time ago manager Graham Turner said the case could go to court.

Leeds Fans unhappy with Performance

Even a neutral would have to admit that Hereford United made the once mighty Leeds United very ordinary at Edgar Street last night.

And the Leeds supporters who were at the game made their feelings known.

Manager Simon Grayson must have heard the chants. He didn't look a very happy man at the end of the ninety minutes.

The Yorksire Post described the scenes.

Not a single person within earshot of the 2,000 visiting spectators in Hereford last night could have missed their scathing verdict.

A chant of "we're s*** and we're sick of it" echoed around Edgar Street in the few remaining minutes of a game that humiliated Leeds in a way which would surely have hurt Grayson in his days as a fan. It visibly pained him as he faced up to the media after full-time.

And here are a couple of views from Leeds Supporters:

Firstly Mike Woodhead:

well im a leeds fan living in hereford and i can see us in league one again next season, considering hereford lost 3 of there centre halves to injury on saterday at cheltenham,i really thought it would be our 3 points ,but watching that tonight i was horified,it was trash, and ive got to say, trundles pen was school boy stuff i was just to the one side of it,and he hit so softly it was dreadfull,i just feel so sorry 4 all those leeds fans that made that long trip down to after sit and watch leeds play like a pub team,o and thanks MR BECKFORD FOR REALLY HELPING OUR CAUSE WOT A MUPPET YOU REALLY ARE.

Secondly 'Richard':

I was at the game and I must say that Hereford are a poor, poor side. The worrying thing about my view of Hereford is that they still deserved to win with their two shots on goal and 100% goal to shots ratio. We had none (not counting the weak penalty). Absolutely shocking display. Just pulling a Leeds shirt on is not good enough, you have to earn the right to wear it!

Finally Hereford United historian Ron Parrott summed it up:

Come on you Leeds fans, at least give Hereford some credit! We lost all 3 of our central defenders to injury last Saturday and fielded a very weakened side. It's no more than sour grapes to suggest that Hereford were a "poor, poor side" We played the better passing game, created the better chances (dubious penalty apart - watch the replay!!) and at the end of the day, we "wanted it" more than Leeds did! Swallow your pride, forget your disappointment and give us some credit!

Gulacsi saves the day

Peter Gulacsi's penalty save changed the game last night at Edgar Street and manager Graham Turner was impressed.

"The goal-keeper was exceptional," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I think it was a tremendous save from the penalty and other things - coming and catching crosses.

"Very competent performance from an 18 year old."

Turner also spoke about Godwin Antwi.

"We dragged Godwin Antwi in. Very difficult for a young player to come in.

"The first time he met the players was 6pm. I thought he setteled in and did well for us."

And Febian Brandy who scored his second goal in two games for the Bulls.

"He's been lively up-front. He's only played two full games this season before coming to us, so he was always going to feel the pace.

"With the games coming thick and fast I think he will get better."

Overall Turner praised the hard work of the players.

"Over the two games the players have been magnificent and I think we deserved the six points from the two matches."

Managers Reaction from Edgar Street

Both managers spoke to Sky Sports after tonight's game.

"The last two matches we've showed a lot of character under difficult circumstances," said Graham Turner for Hereford United.

"But tonight against a good Leeds side, I think we played reasonably well. Again showed a lot of character and worked very hard for the victory.

"In the end I felt we deserved it."

Simon Grayson wasn't so happy.

"Performances like that are not acceptable for a football club like us," said the Leeds United manager.

"Players realise now what it's all about. They can't expect to just turn up and get results away from home."

Antwi gets a Nine

Hereford United's new loan signing Godwin Antwi was given a nine for his performance against Leeds United this evening.

His team-mate Peter Gulasci received an eight, no doubt partly for the penalty he saved from Lee Trundle. Kris Taylor also received an eight.

The remainder of the Bulls squad were all given a seven.

Leeds' Andy Robinson was given a seven for his efforts. The rest of the team were given either a five or a six.

Hard-working Bulls see off Leeds

Hereford United recorded their second win in a row with a hard fought 2-0 success over Leeds United at Edgar Street this evening. The game could have taken a much different route had Lee Trundle converted a first-half penalty but failure to do so coupled with Jennison Myrie-Williams drilled opening goal sent The Bulls on their way to victory. Febian Brandy's deft finish in the second half doubled the advantage as Hereford saw out the remainder of the game comfortably in front of 6120, including some 1903 from Leeds.

With a number of injuries sustained during the win at Cheltenham, Graham Turner had to shuffle his defence about. New loan signing Godwin Antwi and Richard Jackson were introduced with Josh Gowling and Dean Beckwith making way. There were no other changes in the line up although Craig Jones came in on the bench. Leeds started with Luciano Becchio and Lee Trundle up front, with top goalscorer Jermaine Beckford out due to suspension. The highly rated Fabian Delph starred in the midfield as he looked to pull the strings for the Elland Road outfit, who lost at Huddersfield on the weekend and were looking to return back to winning ways to re-ignite their play-off push.

The visitors made a lively start with a host of possession but little to show for it; a long-range effort from Carl Dickinson tested Peter Gulacsi but the Hungarian shot-stopper held on. Hereford burst into life just after the 20th minute when a slip on the right-wing allowed Myrie-Williams a chance to run at the Leeds' defence beating three players on a 60 yard run before firing a powerful left foot shot just past the near post from inside the area. Steve Guinan sliced a shot from 20 yards wide after a weak Rui Marques header whilst at the other end, the Bulls' back-line backed off Becchio but the Argentinian couldn't hit the target from long-range after taking a pass down on his chest.

Leeds were given a golden opportunity to take the lead when a throw in made its way to Andy Robinson who played a one-two with Becchio and continued his run into the box. It was eventually ended by a push from Kris Taylor on the former Swansea winger and the referee pointed to the spot; Trundle steped up but he saw his placed spot-kick superbly saved by Gulacsi. From the corner that followed, Becchio was given time inside the box to place a header goalwards but it was blocked before a clearence was made. Within two minutes of the penalty decision, Hereford shocked Leeds by scoring through Myrie-Williams. The on loan Bristol City winger had to be thankful to the referee who played a good advantage after a late tackle on Brandy, allowing Sam Hewson to pick out Myrie-Williams on the left. He cut before drilling a left-foot shot under Casper Ankergren and into the far corner. With time running out in the first-half, Hereford showed increased confidence following the goal and Hewson saw a trickling half-volley go past the post following a cleared corner.

The second-half started as expected with Leeds looking to make an early impact on the Hereford defence and they nearly did just that when Becchio, seemingly offside, controlled a through ball to get a clear run in on goal. Just when the former Barcelona man looked like he may pull the trigger, Antwi made a last ditch tackle, perhaps illegally, to put the ball out for a corner. At the other end, Sam Gwynne tried his luck from 35 yards with an effort that had Ankergren scrambling but ultimately went wide. Simon Grayson introduced both Mike Grella and Bradley Johnson in place of the ineffective Trundle and Robert Snodgrass. Yet, the changes had little effect as soon after Hereford doubled their advantage.

Brandy's pace and persistance saw him win a free-kick near the corner flag allowing Myrie-Williams the chance to cross. The ball was floated towards the back-post where Antwi out jumped his marker to set up Brandy who touched in from close-range. The Man Utd loanee was delighted with his second goal in as many games, celebrating with an impressive backflip. Leeds tried their best to get back into the game but strong defending from a resillient Bulls' back-line ensured that only long-shots would threaten Gulacsi's goal. Johnson shot wildly over from 25 yards whilst Robinson sent a shot past the post after meeting a Richard Rose clearence.

David Prutton added experience to the Leeds' midfield, when he replaced Ben Parker but it was Hereford who looked dangerous on the break when good link-up between the front pairing of Guinan and Brandy saw the little striker flash a shot wide after a chest down from the former Cheltenham man. Robinson, much like Johnson's earlier effort, failed to trouble Gulacsi with a long-range effort before Hereford could have and probably should have put the icing on a very sweet cake when Guinan chased down a long punt forward by Gulacsi; Hereford's leading marksman shrugged off a challenge from Marques but his flick over Ankergren fell just over the bar. In the final moments, Brandy received a fine ovation when leaving the pitch to be replaced by the former Leeds youngster Simon Johnson whilst Leeds went close through Becchio, controlling a pass from B. Johnson but he couldn't hit the target with his strike landing just past Gulacsi's far post.

For the first time this season, Hereford have managed back to back wins and it couldn't have come at a more important time. The introduction of the Premiership loanees have added some much needed quality to the side, with all four showing experience beyond their age. Leeds looked tidy in possession, with Delph showing some class touches but they lacked quality in the final third with The Bulls defence putting in an excellent all round performance. Rose has had his critics but certainly looks comfortable in the centre of defence whilst Antwi made a very encouraging debut. Next up for Hereford is the visit of yet another play-off chasing outfit in Peterborough; the Posh have fond memories of Edgar Street as they secured promotion there last season.

Results Round Up

The gap to safety is now just three points for the Bulls after tonight's win. Swindon's 1-1 draw at Millwall puts them three points ahead of the Bulls on the same matches played, while Brighton (two points ahead, same games) and Leyton Orient (three points ahead, played two games more than the Bulls) didn't play. Cheltenham's hopes of ten wins in eighteen looks bleak after a 1-0 loss to Stockport put them nine points adrift of their target. Crewe beat Southend 1-0 but remain five points short.

Yeovil's reaction to Russell Slade's departure was a first loss in five with a 3-0 thumping by local rivals Bristol Rovers. At the top Leicester edged closer with a 2-2 draw at Hartlepool, but remain 16 points inside the promotion zone after Saturday's visitors Peterboro drew 1-1 at Tranmere.

In League Two Brentford remain top on goal difference after Wycombe won 1-0 at Dagenham. Bradford and Darlington were goalless, while Shrewsbury beat Chester 1-0 with Nick Chadwick only playing the first half.

In the Conference Burton edged closer to the League with a 2-1 win over Wrexham. Kidderminster suffered another loss, 3-1 at home to Cambridge, to slip three points away from the play-offs.

Meanwhile in the Johnstones Paint Trophy Luton will face Scunthorpe in the final after the Hatters beat Brighton on penalties, while Gary Hooper netted for the Irons to see off Rotherham 3-0 on aggregate.

Gulacsi Save Turns Match

A Peter Gulacsi penalty save midway through the first half turned tonight's League One match in the Bulls favour.

After Lee Trundle's penalty was pushed away for a corner the Edgar Street crowd was visibly lifted as Leeds threatened to push the Bulls over. Within two minutes Jennison Myrie-Williams slammed home at the other end, and Febian Brandy made it two in two matches to give the Bulls what became a comfortable win as Leeds fell into disarray.

The 1,903 Leeds fans in the 6,120 crowd ended the match signing about how sick they were at being so poor, while the Bulls were insistent on survival.
