Bulls Net First No-Score Draw In 54

The Bulls got their first no-score draw in 54 league matches as a fine performance from Peterboro keeper Mark Tyler kept the scores level.

The result sees the Bulls move back above Bristol Rovers into 9th, after Rovers lost at Lincoln.

Full report later.

Boston Could Fold Within Weeks

Boston United could fold within weeks after a planning application to move their home was rejected.

The club owe £900,000 to the Inland Revenue, seperate to the £300,000 that former chairman Pat Malkinshaw has to repay them, plus other debts and current chairman Jim Rodwell has admitted that the club may not survive to see 2007: "I thought we'd possibly get a deferral to put some of the issues to bed and I am staggered that that the councillors have refused the deferral. This is very, very disappointing and this is a very black day for Boston United. Where we go from here, I just don't know."

Nick Harding, a Boston Borough Council planner, told the BBC: "A draft version of the business plan was submitted many months ago. We assessed that and identified several weaknesses in that document and asked for a new one. This was submitted but came in quite late and we didn't have enough time to thoroughly evaluate it.

"We have to decide planning applications for planning reasons. What we shouldn't be doing is letting the club's financial position dictate the physical-built development."

Rodwell has admitted that he is considering his future from a legal standpoint - he would be liable to prosecution if Boston are technically insolvent but continue trading - and is due to meet shareholders in parent company Lavaflow, suggesting that if they fail to persuade the shareholders for extra funding the club will fold when current funds run out at the end of the month.

BBC Recreate Virtual Volley

The BBC have recreated Andy Ferrell's stunning volley for their Virtual Replay series.

The strike can be viewed from several different angles, including several players and the ball itself. You can see the recreation, along with a slightly fuller and rebuilt Edgar Street, at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/virtual_replay/6200560.stm?goalid=500515

All ticket for Gasheads at Hereford

Bristol Rovers supporters are being told to buy their tickets in advance for the game against Hereford United at Edgar Street on Boxing Day.

The wording on the Official Bristol Rovers is clear:

The Boxing Day visit to Hereford United has today been made all-ticket for away supporters, with tickets going on sale tomorrow morning. The Edgar Street clash gets underway at 12:30pm on Tuesday 26th December, and a large following of Gasheads are expected to make the relatively short trip north.

Crow and Mclean - lethal partnership

Hereford United's defence will have to be alert tomorrow evening when Peterborough United are the visitors to Edgar Street.

Danny Crow scored both goals which put Posh into the Third Round of the FA Cup last Saturday at Tranmere and has been talking about his partnership with Aaron Mclean.

"My partnership with Aaron is going really well. He works so hard and unsettles so many defenders that I get more space," Crow told the Peterborough press.

"It was a great win, but we mustn't get carried away with the third round draw as we have some very important matches in the league coming up."

Manager Keith Alexander commented:

"We have been playing well and this was another great effort by the players. We prepared well and I felt we played some cracking football.

"Danny took his goals well, but he'll be the first to admit that he arrival of Aaron Mclean has helped him enormously."

Crow has today signed a new two year deal with the Posh.

Mclean joined Peterborough just over a month ago initially on loan but it is expected he will be transferred from Grays Athletic for around £150,000 in January.

Mclean is well known to Hereford United supporters both from games against Grays Athletic last season and Aldershot in the two previous seasons.

Peterborough took close to 2,000 supporters to Tranmere last Saturday for the Cup game, but are unlikely to bring more than 300 to Hereford tomorrow.

Mid-field dilemma for Turner

Graham Turner faces a dilemma, albeit a pleasant one, in deciding who should play in mid-field for the Bulls tomorrow evening against Peterborough United.

Although both youngsters Luke Webb and Andy Ferrell

Ferrell (hidden!) being congratulated by his team-mates after scoring on Saturday - picture by Andy Compton of the Hereford Journal - click to enlarge

played and scored in Saturday's Cup game, the Hereford United manager is expected to return to loanees John Eustace and Neil MacKenzie to run the mid-field.

However with another FA Cup game in five weeks, Turner may feel he'll have to give both Webb and Ferrell some games beforehand even if both Eustace and MacKenzie are still at Edgar Street.

At present Eustace is due back at Stoke after the Torquay game, whilst MacKenzie is due to stay until after the Notts County game on December 22nd.

However with Scunthorpe second in Division One but out of the FA Cup, it's possible that MacKenzie could stay for a further month at Hereford in which case he may be able to play in the forthcoming Cup game.

The position with Eustace is uncertain. Stoke are currently seventh in the Championship and may be content to allow Eustace more time to return to full fitness.

Purdie up for player of the round

Rob Purdie, Hereford United's club captain, is one of five players nominated for the FA's player of the round. Purdie converted a penalty and just a few minutes later scored a goal in Hereford's 4-0 win over Port Vale last Saturday.

The five players nominated are:

Danny Crow - Peterborough United
Phil Jevons - Bristol City
Jason Puncheon - Barnet
Rob Purdie - Hereford United
Stuart Searle - Basingstoke Town

It's now up to supporters of Hereford United to vote for Purdie. If he wins the poll he will go to the Cup Final as a VIP.

UPDATE 3.55pm: Purdie in front with 46% of vote.

More from the FA:

Peterborough's Crow won the vote of Radio Five Live's Mark Clemmit for his brace in the 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers.

After going a goal behind, Crow turned in Adam Newton's low cross to pull Peterborough level. Crow doubled his tally on 70 minutes, drilling home from 12 yards to send Posh through.

Also on the goal trail was Bristol City hotshot Jevons.

The former Everton forward cracked a stunning first half hat-trick against Gillingham in his side's thrilling 4-3 win on Sunday - a performance which won the vote of The Times' Walter Gammie.

Rob Purdie put in a captain's performance as Hereford beat Port Vale 4-0.

Purdie scored twice, one a penalty, to earn the nomination of Nick Horler, Managing Director Retail of E.ON UK. Hereford, a team rich in Cup tradition, will play the winners of Bristol City and Bournemouth in the Third Round.

Barnet's Puncheon was nominated by Ricky George of The Telegraph following his man of the match display in his side's 4-1 win over Northampton.

The winger was inspirational in the second half after Barnet had fallen a goal behind, setting up Dean Sinclair and Magno Vieira as well as winning a penalty as the home side cruised through to the Third Round.

The fifth nomination, from David Watters, editor of the Non League Paper, goes to Searle for his heroics in goal during Basingstoke's 1-1 draw with Aldershot.

Searle, who is pursuing a career as a goalkeeping coach, should have plenty of tips to pass on from his man of the match display at The Recreation Ground where his saves ensured a replay.

As well as a VIP day to the 2007 Cup Final, the winner will receive £500 of football equipment to donate to a local school of their choice and silver salver to commemerate the win.

Former Hereford United player Steve Guinan won the player of the round when he scored a hat-trick at Harrow.

Peterborough at Edgar Street tomorrow

Peterborough United are the visitors to Edgar Street for a League Two fixture against Hereford United tomorrow evening.

It's several seasons since the two sides last met.

This was an FA Cup First Round tie at London Road in November 2003 when the Posh defeated the Bulls 2-0.

Only two Hereford United players who played that day - Tamika Mkandawire and Rob Purdie - are still with the club.

Meanwhile a reminder that the under 10's can watch this game (and all other home League games) for just three pounds.

"We are keeping our prices down for the under 10's to £3 for the remainder of the season," said Graham Turner recently.

"To take advantage of this offer, tickets must be pre-bought with a full paying adult."

Finally Andy Penn from the West Midlands will be the referee for the game.

Connell and Gulliver have played for Bournemouth

Two current Hereford United players have both turned out for Bournemouth in the past.

Alan Connell joined the Cherries in 2002 from Ipswich, where he started his football career as a trainee.

He had three seasons at the club before moving to Torquay at the start of last season.

Whilst at Torquay he failed to make too much impact and Bournemouth tried, but failed, to have him back on loan last March.

Phil Gulliver had a two month loan spell at Bournemouth in 2003. He was a trainee at Middlesborough at the time.

Friday night if Cup game is at Rovers

Bristol Rovers have said that if they play Hereford United in the Third Round of the FA Cup then the game is likely to be played on Friday January 5th.

This edited report is from the Official Bristol Rovers Website:

Rovers will play Hereford United at the Memorial Stadium in the third round of the FA Cup - if they can overturn AFC Bournemouth in their round two replay.

And if Rovers should emerge triumphant at the Fitness First Stadium in nine days' time, the round three game would almost certainly be scheduled for Friday 5th January.

Local rivals Bristol City were handed a home tie against Coventry City, and will immediately opt for the Saturday afternoon date.

And with the two Bristol clubs not allowed to play at home on the same day for policing reasons, and Bristol Rugby at home to Northampton Saints in the Guinness Premiership on the Sunday afternoon, it leaves Friday evening as the only realistic match slot.

Provisional discussions between officials from Rovers, Bournemouth and Hereford United will take place this week.

Hereford travel to Bristol Rovers or Bournemouth

In the FA Cup Third Round Hereford United have been drawn away to either Bristol Rovers or Bournemouth.

In some ways it's a poor draw for Hereford with little likelihood of a cash windfall from this game.

On the other hand, assuming the Bulls recent run continues, the match is winnable. And that could lead to a glamour tie in Round Four.

Supporters will have to wait until next Tuesday week to find out who Hereford will play. Yesterday's game at Bristol Rovers finished 1-1. Former Hereford United player Ryan Green missed the game as he was out with an injury.

Bournemouth are expected to start as favourites to win the replay, however they are currently 21st in League One just two points above bottom club Leyton Orient.

Former Hereford United coach Richard O'Kelly recently left the South Coast team, who have financial problems, for Doncaster.

Meanwhile it looks as though there will be a mid-week trip to Bury for the League Two fixture against them. It was due to have been played on Third Round Saturday January 6th.

Praise For Referee Probert

It's rare for Bulls fans to do it but yesterday's referee, Lee Probert from Gloucestershire, has received praise from several supporters after yesterday's performance.

Many Bulls and Port Vale fans were happy that the referee let the game flow, making liberal use of advantages. This is in stark contrast to his performance last week at Shrewsbury, where he booked six and sent one off after a 20 man brawl.

Probert is no stranger to Edgar Street. He presided over the Bulls 3-1 win in the League Cup over Coventry earlier in the season as well as three Conference games in 2002 and 2003.

FA Cup draw is at 3.10pm

The all-important FA Cup third round draw is expected to start just after 3.10pm this afternoon.

The draw will be covered by both BBC1, Sky Sports News and FiveLive.

The balls will be drawn shortly after the live Second Round televised game between Salisbury City and Nottingham Forest on BBC1.

There are 64 numbered balls providing 32 ties with the Premiership and Championship clubs numbered in alphabetical order, with Arsenal as number one and Wolverhampton Wanderers as number 44.

The remaining clubs are numbered in the order they came out for the Second Round draw, so Hereford United are ball number 49.

The Bulls will receive £24,000 for yesterday's defeat of Port Vale. The Third Round takes place on the weekend of Saturday January 6th.

Turner Wants Round Four

Speaking to the press after the Second Round win over Port Vale, manager Graham Turner wanted the easy route into Round Four rather than the glamour tie:

"It was a good performance. I thought we went about it very well. We quietly controlled the game in the first half and did not have many anxious moments. In the second half we showed our pace and passing ability which has been a feature of our game over the past two years.

"Now we would like to draw the lowest team left in the competition."

As it stands the lowest team left in the competition is Basingstoke, bottom of Conference South, who drew with Aldershot today. The lowest team that is guaranteed a Third Round spot is Tamworth, 21st in the Conference, while Salisbury - also of the Conference South - play Nottm Forest in the live BBC1 game.

Stockport Apologies For Fans Behaviour

Stockport County have issued an official apology after several fans were observed throwing... paper aeroplanes!

The club had issued paper sheets as a 'welcome home' to former manager Danny Begara, who was guest of honour for today's game. However, they were soon unleashed into wave after wave of 80gsm photocopied terror.

The club statement concludes: "It was a silly gesture by some of our fans to throw the paper around and we apologise to anyone who suffered from this behaviour. We will not be allowing the use of paper or cards again in the future."

Following on from the ban on paper, Stockport County will print their next matchday programme on stone tablets. Or maybe not.

Results Round-Up

In today's only League Two game, Shrewsbury held the lead three times but eventually had to settle for a point in a 3-3 draw at Accrington, watched by just 1,602. It's Accrington's first point in seven league games, they haven't won in 90 minutes in 12 games overall, and lifts them up three places to 17th.

In the FA Cup, Barnet joined the Bulls in a result to savour after beating Northampton 4-1. Wrexham are also unlikely 'giantkillers' after Scunthorpe were dumped out 2-0 (freeing Neil Mackenzie to be cup tied in the next round?), while Bristol Rovers need a replay after drawing 1-1 with Bournemouth. Bury and Chester drew 2-2, with Lee Steele scoring twice and then being sent off while celebrating the latter. Darlington lost at home to Swansea, 3-1.

Macclesfield wish it was the FA Cup every week, winning two out of three FA Cup ties this season as they beat Hartlepool 2-1 although it took a dismissal to turn the game in favour of the Silkmen. Mansfield thought they'd earned a League One scalp until a last minute equaliser gave Doncaster a 1-1 draw. Swindon overcame a stubborn Morecambe with an 89th minute penalty winner for the only goal of the game.

Torquay, under new management, drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient and Peterboro, visitors to Edgar Street on Tuesday, despatched League One Tranmere 2-1. MK Dons lost 2-0 at home to Blackpool.

Of the Conference sides, Tamworth are through after beating Rushden 2-1 and Aldershot have a replay at Basingstoke after a John Grant goal gave them a 1-1 draw. Stafford crashed out 3-0 at Brighton

Tomorrow, Bristol City entertain Gillingham at 1pm while Salisbury take on Nottm Forest in the BBC1 game which precedes the draw for the Third Round.

Foyle: "Not Fit To Wear Shirts"

Speaking to the BBC after the game today Port Vale manager Martin Foyle, who kept his side in the dressing room for 40 minutes, was embarrassed by his sides performance:

"There was no passion, commitment, and I totally agree with supporters that they don't want to wear the shirts. The players said they were going to take full responsibility for it.

"The goals conceded were an absolute nightmare. We should have gone in 0-0, it was a simple throw in that nobody was picking up. For the second, one ball beat four players and the keepers' had to bring him down. The next one George Abbey stuck out a leg, it was absolutely pathetic defending. I'm not just blaming individuals, it's the whole team - nobody could hold their head up.

"It's rock bottom at the moment. We need a big injection of passion and commitment. I won't go hiding as a manager, never did as a player, but we had eight players out today and we just can't cope with it. There's a lot wrong but it can be rectified.

"I'm just trying to get the players to argue amongst themselves. Sometimes today's player just get on the bus, go straight home, and they're not worried about it. I want to make some changes and do something about it and very quickly.

"Today is probably the worst Port Vale performance for many a year. I've told them to have a good look at themselves. I'll pull them all in individually on Monday, they've got to be brave enough to take criticism."

Stand-in captain Paul Harsley admitted in another interview that there were heated words in the dressing room after the game, but he believed the squad was better than today's performance.

We looked like a Sunday Pub Team

Port Vale websites have started to report the result at Edgar Street this afternoon.

Here's a little from their 'Vital' site report:

We looked like a Sunday league pub team. Our defending was idiotic - Colin Miles and George Abbey were both utterly useless. Clayton Fortune wasn't much better. Paul Harsley (stand in right-back and stand-in Captain) at least looked like he was trying.

Tim Sills fouled by Vale keeper which led to Rob Purdie's penalty goal - picture by Andy Compton of the Hereford Journal.

The midfield was completely overrun by our Div.2 opponents. Whitaker, Sonner, Gardner, Smith all offered nothing.

Up front Constantine and Moore had no kind of service at all. When they did get the ball in the Hereford penalty box nothing came of it, Stefan Moore looked clueless with the ball at his feet.

and there's more:

Hereford finished it off on 83 minutes as they carved through Vale again to make the final score 4-0. At this point Vale players decided to fight amongst themselves, the most lively they looked all game.

Widest margin in FA Cup proper since 1958

The 4-0 victory over Port Vale was the widest margin for Hereford United in an FA Cup game, other than a qualifying round, for many seasons.

The Bulls did put six past Harrow in October 2003 in a fourth qualifying round, but there hasn't been a victory like today's since long before Graham Turner took over as manager at Edgar Street.

Hereford scored four against Scunthrope in a third round replay in 1982 but failed to keep a clean sheet on that occasion.

One has to go back to 1958 when in a Round Two match the result was Hereford United 6 Queens Park Rangers 1.

Meanwhile Hereford united will collect £24,000 in prize money for their efforts this afternoon.

Atkins Quits Torquay

The inevitable has happened and Ian Atkins has quit Torquay, a week after he was replaced as manager by Lubos Kubik.

Atkins was offered a Director of Football role within the club but, after a week of consideration, he has decided to leave for pastures new with rumours circulating that he will be the next manager at Brentford.

Meanwhile, Torquay have announced a £11,000 profit for the last financial year after recording a £40,000 loss the previous year. Turnover was nearly £1.5million.

In other news, Boston have been refused planning permission for a new stadium that is hoped would clear their debts. Former Chief Executive Jon Sotnick, who is still believed to be involved in development company Lavaflow, told the Lincolnshire Echo:
"When I learned of the news, I was quite dismayed. I said at the time of launching these relocation plans - which is more than two years ago now - a move would be essential to the club's future. If the council decides to turn them down, the outlook for Boston United will be very bleak indeed. "I would fear very much for the stability of the club because, without incremental income from hospitality, Boston are losing a lot of money. I still stand by my belief that the football club will cease to exist if a new ground move is not granted."

Consistant for eight games - Purdie

Rob Purdie agreed with Keith Hall, who was reporting for BBC Hereford and Worcester, that it had been an emphatic victory.

"I think the work rate that we put in and the way we passed the ball around - you couldn't tell the League difference between the two clubs.

"We now proven how we can play. We been consistant now for, probably, the last eight games and this has been our best performance out of the eight.

"You never know what might happen in the next round, we might pull a big team which would be great for the players as well as the supporters."

Reviewing the game Purdie noted that Port Vale are a good team despite their performance today.

"When we got to grips with the game and started to spread it out wide we started to control the game. We sat back a bit at 3-0, probably to get a breather, but we always looked dangerous on the break."

Purdie scored his eight penalty of the season today.

"I've now equalled my best goal scoring season with my second goal as well. It's great to get penalties but I'm more happy with scoring from open play."

Purdie celebrating with Sills and Webb - picture by Andy Compton of the Hereford Journal

Purdie was the man of the match as awarded by match sponsors Shane Howells Ltd.

In the PA stats for the game Purdie was given 9. Connell, Ferrell and the back three of Mkandawire, Beckwith and Gulliver received 8's.

Super Bulls In With Big Guns

Hereford United may get a chance to test themselves against one of the top teams in the country, if the F.A. Cup third round draw is kind to them. The Bulls secured their place in the hat with a fantastic victory against League One outfit Port Vale at Edgar Street this afternoon, as F.A. Cup fever hit Hereford.

Changes had to be made by United, as loanee's John Eustace and Neil MacKenzie were ineligible, meaning a return to the side for Andy Ferrell and Luke Webb, who both started the first round replay against Shrewsbury. The two did not disappoint either, as both managed to get on the score sheet with fantastic goals.

It took a while for the Mighty Whites to break the deadlock, but when they did they tore their, supposedly, superior opponents apart. Port Vale had to whether an early storm though, and were fortunate to get to the twenty minute mark on level terms. Andy Williams could have given his home town side a dream start, but was quickly closed down as Tamika Mkandawire headed down to his feet inside of the six yard box. Tim Sills had an even better chance then, as he headed just inches wide of the far post when Williams turned provider and crossed from the right.

Sills went extremely close again as United dominated the opening stages, after some brilliant play between Webb, Rob Purdie and Alan Connell, with the latter cutting back to the edge of the box. Connell then slipped a pass to Ferrell who skipped past the challenge of George Abbey, but took a touch too many as he tried to find some space in the box. The ball made its way to Williams twenty yards out though, but he curled over the bar.

Port Vale managed to steady themselves then, but didn't look threatening and it was the hosts who went close once again with little more than half an hour gone. Williams managed to turn away from Abbey in the box, beat the 'keeper Mark Goodlad with a low shot, but Clayton Fortune was on the line to hack away. United's first half efforts did pay off before the break though, as Webb netted his second goal for the club, both of which have been F.A. Cup goals. Connell had just fired another warning shot before Webb's opener on forty one minutes. A bouncing loose ball sat up perfectly for the youngster twenty five yards out, and he struck it perfectly, as the ball flew in off the far post.

Vale were out early after the interval, and Jeff Smith hit the first shot on target within half a minute of the restart. Wayne Brown was alert though, as he dived to his left and tipped around the post. Hereford weren't allowing a come back though, and were 2-0 up four minutes into the half. After a goal kick, the ball was headed straight back from the midfield, and Sills raced ahead of a flat-footed defence, went to advance around Goodlad, who went straight through Sills and gave away a clear-cut penalty. The only mistake Mr. Probert made was only booking the 'keeper. Up stepped Purdie who, as expected, made no mistake from the spot, retaining his 100% penalty record this season.

If the 710 supporters were thinking about leaving in disgust, Purdie made a number of their minds up two minutes later as he made it 3-0, with his ninth goal of the season. He raced onto Connell's pass to the right, where he found himself in acres of space. He advanced into the box, took a touch and played what appeared to be a pretty poor low left footed cross. However, a defender took a swipe at it, missed it completely, and the ball curled into the far bottom corner. With the match as good as over with forty minutes left, a number of travelling fans decided that was enough.

United decided the damage was done and took a step back and allowed Port Vale some of the play, but Phil Gulliver, Dean Beckwith and Mkandawire did well to ensure Brown's goal was rarely under threat. Nathan Lowndes did manage to cross for Leon Constantine, but Vale's top scorer headed wide in a rare effort at goal. The Bulls were happy enough to charge away on the counter, and it almost paid off when Jeannin made an overlapping run before crossing to Connell, who fired wide under pressure from two defenders.

Around seventy minutes had gone when Williams was replaced by Stuart Fleetwood,

Fleetwood before the game - picture by Andy Compton of the Hereford Journal

who is back from a virus, and he was at the far post with Connell when Mkandawire's cross was turned over his own bar by Colin Miles. Graham Turner then replaced Connell with Sheldon and finally with five minutes left Richard Rose replaced Sills. However, that wasn't before Sills made an excellent contribution to Hereford's fourth and final goal. Purdie had released the front man down the right, and Sills showed great vision to pick out Ferrell's run to the edge of the box. The cross was perfect, and Ferrell's connection on the volley was just as good, as the ball flew into the top corner, capping a stunning performance in front of a crowd of 4,076. Ferrell's celebration was quite impressive as well!

Although some may well have backed Hereford, in front of their home crowd, to dump Port Vale from the league above out of the F.A. Cup, few would have predicted such a comprehensive victory. The Bulls showed their class this afternoon, and the result really will inject some confidence into the side. The wait is on now for the third round draw, which takes place tomorrow at 3.15 p.m.

HUFC: Brown, Gulliver, Mkandawire, Beckwith, Jeannin, Purdie, Ferrell, Webb, Connell, Sills, Williams. Subs: Travis, Rose, Sheldon, Thompson, Fleetwood.

Port Vale: Goodlad, Abbey, Fortune, Miles, Harsley, Smith, Sonner, Gardner, Whitaker, Moore, Constantine. Subs: Anyon, McGregor, Cardle, Briscoe, Lowndes.

Bulls Demolish Vale To Enter 3rd Round

The Bulls humbled League One Port Vale 4-0 in today's FA Cup Round Two match at Edgar Street.

Another Luke Webb thunderbolt, a Rob Purdie double - a penalty and a deflected effort, plus a goal of the match effort from Andy Ferrell gave the Bulls a deserved win over a very demoralised Port Vale side that struggled to stop arguing between themselves in what is very likely manager Martin Foyle's last game in charge.

The draw for the Third Round is on Sunday at about 3.15pm on BBC1 and Sky Sports News, with the Bulls being no. 49. The Third Round is scheduled for the weekend of 6th January.

Full report later.

Jeannin wants another chance against Man Utd

Alex Jeannin, Hereford United's French wing-back, would love to have another chance at playing against a Premiership side in the FA Cup. When he was at Exeter City he played twice against Manchester United in the third round.

"Those two games are among the most memorable of my career," Jeannin told the Western Daily Press.

"I was up against Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford and then in the replay at St James' Park."

Jeannin has had a difficult start to this season as he missed the first three games through suspension.

"It meant by the time the suspension was over I was out of the squad.

"Quite a few of our players had never played in the Football League and naturally they were hungry to get into the starting line-up.

"I had to work hard in training and wait for my chance to get back into the team.

"Playing wing-back is a hard position to play, you are alternating between defence and attack all the time and have to do a lot of running off the ball.

"We will have to keep focused to get through to the third round and, who knows, it may be Manchester United."

Fleetwood may return for Bulls tomorrow

Stuart Fleetwood is expected to take some part in tomorrow's FA Cup game according to Graham Turner.

The Hereford United manager told BBC Hereford and Worcester earlier today that he hasn't decided what role Fleetwood might play.

"He's trained all week; he was obviously laid fairly low by his illness," said Turner.

"He lost nearly a stone in weight.

"We've got to look at the situation and decide whether we're going to start with him or whether we get a good half hour out of him at some stage during the game.

"That's a decision to be made, but he's available for selection."

Meanwhile supporters are advised to get to Edgar Street in reasonable time for the game.

"We kick off at 1pm on police advice, and I urge United supporters to arrive early - particularly through the six gates at the Meadow End," said club secretary Joan Fennessy as reported in the Hereford Journal.

Finally as well as BBC Hereford and Worcester commentary from the game is also available through the FA Website. Go to the FA Cup section of the site, find the game and click on Hereford. It is expected to be the same coverage but as it is on the internet it will be available throughout the UK.

Pilkington can't play tomorrow

Port Vale has lost their appeal against their captain's, George Pilkington, red card awarded last Wednesday when Vale played Crewe.

He will miss tomorrow's game against Hereford United.

Onwards and Upwards

For several weeks Bulls News has had a small line at the top of its site mentioning Onwards and Upwards.

Today we can reveal more.

Onwards and Upwards, Hereford United's promotion season 2005/2006, was the brain-child of Andy Compton who covers home games for the Hereford Journal.

After last season ended Andy wondered what he was to do with all the hundreds of photographs he had taken of Hereford United in action.

He contacted Brian Goodwin, who writes the match reports for Bulls News, and together they decided to see if there was any merit in releasing a book on last season featuring pictures and reports.

Then the problems began - who would publish it.

Andy spoke with various publishers but it was a chance conversation with Mark Adcock of Print Plus that led to plans going ahead.

Like Andy and Brian, Mark is Hereford United supporter and already did work for the club, in particular the match programme. His support has made the venture possible.

The hard work of deciding which pictures went in the book and the editing of the reports then started. The book had started to take shape.

Andy, Brian and Mark were aware that another Hereford United book was being written at this time. Ron Parrott's The Wilderness Years was to be released in November so a decision was taken not to release Onwards and Upwards until after The Wilderness Years had been launched.

This week the publicity for the new book has started. It's been a quiz prize on BBC Hereford and Worcester and has been mentioned in both the Hereford Journal and the Hereford Times.

The hope is that the book will be in the Hereford United club shop in time for tomorrow's FA Cup tie with Port Vale.

UPDATE: Books arrived at Hereford United this afternoon (Friday).

Two former Hereford United players are in the news this morning. Michael McIndoe and Craig Stanley have hit the headlines but for different reasons.

In fact as regards McIndoe there is a further Hereford United connection through Steve Bull.

Bull came to Edgar Street as a player/coach for a short spell several seasons ago whilst McIndoe was there. However it was Graham Turner who should take the credit for re-launching McIndoe's career - afterall it was Turner who signed him.

This from GiveMeFootball.com:

Wolves legend Steve Bull reckons new signing Michael McIndoe will become a big hit at Molineux following the winger's switch from Barnsley. His initial loan move is expected to be made permanent in January, and Bull believes it will prove to be good business.

The 26-year-old, who made his Wolves debut on Tuesday, was coached at Hereford by Bull, who said: "I saw him at Molineux the other day and he was delighted to have signed for Wolves. He reminds me a bit of Cristiano Ronaldo in the way he moves. If he can get anywhere close to that standard, Wolves will have a very good player."

McIndoe himself said of his move: "I'd be a fool to turn the offer down. They are a bigger club, I'll have a better chance of getting into the Scotland squad." Manager Mick McCartrhy added: "I have known about him for some time. I watched him when I was at Sunderland and you have only got to look at his record. He's been getting better and better."

As for Stanley, he was captain of the Non-League English team that defeated Holland 4-1 earlier this week.

"It's probably the greatest honour of my career so far, it felt really good," Stanley told TheFA.com. "I've been playing in the conference now for the last three and a half years and I last played for England 18 months ago.

"I was disappointed not to be involved earlier this year because I thought I deserved to get a chance, but it wasn't meant to be," he said. "I worked hard at Hereford, but things didn't work out there so I moved to Morecambe and I'm really enjoying my football.

"I think my performances with them have helped me get a place in the England team. But I was quite shocked when Paul asked me (to be captain) - it's a great honour for me."
