Bulls Take Sixth But Play-Off Door Slammed Shut

The Bulls won 1-0 at Forest Green to take sixth place in the Conference table tonight.

However, Grimsby's win at Dartford means the Bulls are mathematically unable to make the play-offs. Rod McDonald's second goal in two starts separated the sides with 444 Bulls in the New Lawn crowd.

Full report later.

Stags Handed Full Edgar Street Allocation

The Bulls have given Mansfield the full 1,559 away allocation for their visit to Edgar Street next Tuesday.

The Stags will begin to sell the tickets, 1,120 terrace and 439 seats, tomorrow with the match being all-ticket for away fans. They have also made their final day match at Field Mill all-ticket, with 2,500 tickets already sold as of this morning, as they chase the Conference title.

Commentary From Forest Green

There will be full match commentary of this evening's game at the New Lawn between Forest Green Rovers and Hereford United.

Both BBC Hereford and Worcester and Bulls Player will be there.

Keith Hall will be behind the microphone for H&W and Jamie Griffiths for Bulls Player.

News Round-Up

Lincoln have released striker Rob Duffy after an injury hit campaign. The former Mansfield man, 30, hasn't played for the Imps since August due to injury. Telford utility man Luke Hubbins will miss their final games of the season due to injury. Former Bulls pair Ryan Valentine and Dan Preston are both also on the injury list but are hoped to make a return.

Luton boss John Still has defended his decision to go on a scouting mission rather than their dismal loss to Gateshead. The veteran boss says he scouted four targets during the trip, with more trips planned. Meanwhile, former Bulls defender Janos Kovacs has returned to Hungary after being told his Hatters deal would not be extended. It is currently unclear whether he intends to return to the UK for next season.

The Welsh League farce continues with a rearranged game between Carmarthen and Airbus set to be played tonight with Carmarthen struggling to field 11 players. The late rearrangement has left the part-timers unable to get time off work, with none of the club's coaching staff available for the game either. The original tie was called off when the league failed to arrange for match officials to travel to the game.

Dartford have announced season ticket prices for next season. Adults will pay £250 on their early bird offer, with another £55 added if the fan wants a specific seat. Portsmouth's prospective chairman says the Supporters Trust has a 'plan B' if they do not win the court case that is due to start soon. Iain McInnes has refused to divulge details of what would happen if they don't gain control of Fratton Park, with a temporary base elsewhere likely.

Torquay have named Thea Bristow, wife of former chairman Paul, as their new chairman. She takes over from Simon Baker, who will remain on the board as vice chairman, with her son Alan also joining the board. The Bristows were part of the 2007 buyout of the club, with the new main stand at the club named after her late husband.

News Round-Up

Cheltenham manager Mark Yates has apologised after swearing at a supporter following their loss at Plymouth on Saturday. Yates, who initially claimed the supporter was drunk but later retracted the comments, says he reacted to defend striker Kaid Mohammed, who received criticism for his sub appearance. Plymouth are reported to be courting Neil Warnock for a Director of Football role. The veteran boss was a guest at Home Park on Saturday.

Telford have cut ticket prices for next season after being relegated from the Conference. Early bird Adult season tickets will cost £210 when they enter Conf North next season, with no price difference between terrace or seating. They are also giving away free tickets to under 8's. The Bucks also say they are unlikely to make a decision on their manager quickly. They have interviewed a number of candidates more than once.

Macclesfield say they axed manager Steve King due to "off-field issues, including the day to day preparation of the team, which became a real concern". The Non-League Paper reports that former Accrington boss John Coleman - who was at Moss Rose on Saturday - is interested in the job, which will be done on a vastly reduced budget next term. The Silkmen have also released striker Dean McDonald with the 27 year old having started only three of 11 appearances since arriving in late January.

Grumpers Top Scorer To Miss Hereford Game

Forest Green Rover's top scorer will miss tomorrow evening's game against Hereford United.

James Norwood received his tenth yellow card of the season at Tamworth last Saturday.

Meanwhile manager Dave Hockaday called in the whole squad for extra training yesterday after their 2-1 defeat which he described as 'damaging'.

He felt his side had been 'bullied' by the Lambs.

They Think It's All Over, It Very Nearly Is

Harwood Bull watched Saturday's game at Macclesfield.

The season is drawing to a close, and the Bulls’ final venture northwards allowed me a short trip over the border from Lancashire to see the game at Macclesfield. There was a real end of season feel to it. A nice sunny day, a relaxed atmosphere and a Hereford side that didn’t look too bothered about the result. Clucas’s low diagonal shot into the corner came so early in the game that I’d almost forgotten it by the whistle at the end of a second half in which the Bulls seemed totally bereft of ideas. It’s just as well that Macclesfield didn’t have much of a cutting edge to their play. The high points of the day for me were the two pints of Black Sheep in the Railway View pub, and the meat and potato pie at the ground. The football was totally forgettable.

My assessment of the season is based on having seen only eight games, but I think realistically, our position now is probably as good as we could have dared hope for. After the clueless Pitman era we have a solid and reliable management team, and are clinging on financially, although without the cup income we would have been in very deep trouble. The ‘overseas investor’ is yet to reveal himself. It’s hard not to be sceptical, investors usually invest because they expect to see some kind of return - where is that going to come from? I can only think there’s a tie in with some of the re-development at either end of the ground, but that could be years away, given the snail like pace of developments in our fair city. Does our prospective investor have that kind of patience?

Best players for me, based on the games I saw, were Stam, for his authority and organising, Clucas who always looked a threat from wide positions, and Bowman when he was in his spell of good form.

Worst match was the 5-2 embarrassment at Hyde, the best probably the 3-2 win at Stockport. Doesn't say much does it?

A friend of mine, now sadly deceased, always used to say "Never again, never coming again" at the end of every bad game. That was in the eighties and nineties, so he said it quite a lot. Of course he always came back and I'm sure we'll be back next season, because that's what we do.

I was pleased to see Chester's return to the Conference, and with Altrincham and Halifax in the Conference North play-off positions that could make another couple of fairly local games for me to go to.

There's also the possibility that Accrington Stanley, just down the road from me, could be relegated to the Conference, but I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

29/10 For Bulls Win At The New Lawn

Despite the Bulls winning 1-0 at Macclesfield yesterday,  and Forest Green losing 2-1 at lowly Tamworth, the bookies are offering what appear to be reasonable odds for a Hereford United win on Tuesday evening at the New Lawn.

Currently the top price for a Hereford win is 29/10 with BetVictor. And the same company has the best price for a draw, 13/5.

We've Got Some Exciting Young Players says Addison

With a relatively young Hereford United side playing at Macclesfield yesterday, there are hopes that many of them will remain with the Bulls next season.

"Martin (Foyle) will sort it out, he knows what he wants," director Colin Addison told BN.

"We are a young side. People like Sam Clucas for example.

"We don't know what will happen with Ryan Bowman.

"Martin will look to build and restructure.

"Obviously there will be departures, that's the name of the game, that's football.

"You look at it and we've got some exciting young players.

"Marley Watkins could show a little bit more consistency but he's busy and bright.

"Young O'Keefe and young Kingsley James, they've performed reasonably well but it's that word consistency.

"Chris Sharp works hard, but he doesn't seem to get his share of luck. He works the line, pressurises people but in front of goal sometimes he needs a little bit more composure.

"Sometimes it's composure, sometimes you need that little bit of luck, it would be nice to see him have that, next time around he might get that.

"He'll know and I sure his old man has told him, you make your own luck in football."

REFRESHMENTS - The New Lawn facilities include The Green Man Inn that usually boasts at least one (sometimes more) real ale and very good pre-match food at reasonable prices.  There are at least four boozers in the town with The Britannia and The Weighbridge both receiving decent reviews.

Neither Team Wanted To Win It said Askey

Macclesfield manager John Askey felt neither team wanted to win the game at Moss Rose this afternoon.

"It looked like an end of season game, I don't think either team wanted to win it," Askey told the press.

"Not badly enough anyway.

"They had the break, we made a mistake for the goal.

"And then they put everybody behind the ball and we didn't have enough to break them down.

"Make one mistake and it's in the back of the net.

"Very good finish."

Macclesfield had a couple of chances in the second half including one effort that hit the post.

"A few chances but it wasn't a great game for anybody."

Bulls win at Macclesfield

A Sam Clucas goal just three minutes into the game was enough to give Hereford United three points at the Moss Rose this afternoon.

Stefan Stam returned to the starting line-up with Rod McDonald dropping to the bench in an otherwise unchanged side.  Former Bull Waide Fairhurst started for the hosts with ex-Forest Green striker Guy Madjo partnering him up front.

Macclesfield’s early tidy possession came to nothing and when Stam played a flighted ball forward, a poor clearance resulted in The Bulls snatching the lead.

Sam Clucas seized on the loose ball and side-stepped a defender before firing a blistering shot into the corner of the net from just outside the box.

Players Gather Around Sam Clucas After His Goal
Kissock got past Bush on the right but his cross hit behind for a goal kick.  Joe Connor fed Sharp who was marauding down the right but his ball inside evaded the advancing Bowman.  Fullback Braham-Barrett sent a speculative ball forward but Bittner was quickly off his line to gather.

Clucas forced a corner on the left, which Marley Watkins whipped in.  Clucas directed the ball back across goal but Chris Sharp spurned the opportunity lifting over from ten yards when a goal looked certain.  Uncharacteristic indecision by Graham almost let Fairhurst in on goal but Bittner was alert to the threat and hoisted the ball upfield.

Fermino tried a long range shot that failed to test Bittner before the Bulls’ keeper had to be out quickly to smother following a surging run from deep by Macclesfield’s Ryan Jackson.  Bush’s long throw found Watkins but his shot went wide before Bittner comfortably dealt with Peter Wynn’s cross.

A short corner on the right drew a foul on Kingsley James and Sam Clucas free kick was headed wide from close range by Sharp.  Then another Clucas flag kick saw Stam’s header tipped over by home keeper Taylor.  Guy Madjo forced a save from Bittner and Bush completed the clearance upfield to who saw his shot deflected for a corner.  Watkins took the kick himself from which Bowman glanced a header inches wide of the upright.

Ryan Bowman With A Chance
HT Macclesfield 0 Bulls 1

Whilst the first half had produced enough chances for The Bulls to be at least three goals to the good, the second period was a dour affair with the hosts having the greater share of possession.

Kingsley James was harshly penalised when Sam Wedgbury threw a leg out to invoke a tumble and win a free kick, which was cleared by Stam.  Chris Bush sent a diagonal ball out to Marley Watkins and from the cross, Sharp headed wide under pressure from Pablo Mills.  A Clucas shot whistled past the post with the keeper beaten then Bush and Watkins combined to produce a chance crossing chance for Clucas but his curling ball drifted beyond the back post and out for a goal kick.

Chris Bush
Joe Heath replaced Bush just short of the hour mark and immediately allowed fellow substitute Mackreth to get the beating of him and deliver a dangerous cross but Stam was well positioned to clear.  Another Mackreth cross from the right found Wynn on the edge of the box but he blazed high and wide.

Marlon Jackson replaced the hard-running Chris Sharp with twenty-five minutes remaining but it was Macclesfield who continued to threaten with Heath given a torrid time by Mackreth.  One cross in particular being headed wide by Madjo with the goal gaping and another requiring a back post headed clearance by Connor.

Ryan Bowman found himself in a deeper midfield role leaving Jackson up front on his own but a combination of lethargy and poor service meant he failed to make an impression on the game to earn a couple of rebukes from the travelling Bulls in the crowd of 1687.

FT Macclesfield 0 Bulls 1

Hereford: Bittner, Conner, Graham, Stam, Bush (Heath 57), Watkins, James, O’Keefe, Clucas, Sharp (Jackson 67), Bowman. Subs not used: McDonald, Smikle, Jones.

Macclesfield: Taylor, Jackson, Audel, P Mills, Braham-Barrett, Kissock (Gnahoua 75), Fermino (Mackreth 55), Wedgbury, Finn, Fairhurst, Madjo. Subs not used: Martin, Amores, A Mills.

The first half was fine following a bright start by The Bulls and they should have had the game sewn up by the break.  Macclesfield had far more possession after the break but The Bulls defence held firm despite a fairly sketchy showing from Heath in the closing half hour.  Chris Sharp, again, worked hard but missed a few good chances and Ryan Bowman looked a threat despite still not appearing to have got used to working with Sharp.

Chris Sharp
Clucas and Watkins worked the flanks well as usual and Kingsley James and Josh O’Keefe got through the midfield graft.  Marlon Jackson’s time on the pitch was less impressive at a time when one would have thought that earning a contract might have been further forward in his thoughts.

See you at Forest Green on Tuesday.

Killer Instinct Missing Said Foyle

Martin Foyle Standing Next To The Hereford Dug-Out
Hereford United manager Martin Foyle felt it had been a 'very hard earned three points' at Macclesfield this afternoon.

"I though we started the game very brightly," Foyle told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Probably should have been three or four up by half-time.

"But today we didn't have that killer instinct that we probably had on Bank Holiday Monday.

"At 1-0 they still had a chance and we started to drop back a little bit.

"If we don't hold the ball up front, the ball is going to keep coming back.

"Second half we kept giving the ball away so they started coming at us and causing us problems. So I had to drop Ryan in there.

"Did they create much, not really except the one that hit the post and a couple of balls that dropped in the box.

"We defended well as a unit."

There were several chances created by the Bulls in the first half but only Sam Clucas's third minute effort went in.

"We had chance after chance, I can remember Stef, Josh, Sharp and Ryan but they haven't gone in.

"We know we have got players that are still learning the trade. Our job is to make them better."

Chris Bush With One Of His Long Throws
Chris Bush was subbed early in the second half. Joe Heath replaced him.

"Chris hasn't played a lot of football and he had a sore back as well.

"He was struggling a little bit."

The Bulls had to do a lot of defending as the game went on.

"I thought Luke and Stef won a lot of headers and crosses that came into the box and Bits took a few out of the air."

Super Chances In First Half Said Addison

Colin Addison At Macclesfield This Afternoon
Hereford United director Colin Addison felt the Bulls had a good first half at Macclesfield but the home side dominated the second period.

"I thought we played very well in the first half," Addison told BN.

"I thought we created some super chances and, in all honesty, we could have been three goals to the good by the break.

"Stam missed a great chance, Sharp had an opportunity.

Sharp's Opportunity
"But second half we just changed it a little bit. Sharp dropped into a deeper role. As an attacking force we were non-exsistant in the second half.

"We defended okay and got away with it really.

"They probably dominated the second half with 70/80% possession but they weren't good enough to score although we were a little lucky with the one that came back off the post.

"Stam and Graham defended well, they got their headers in, got it away.

"But I would have liked to have seen us finish off with a little bit more style especially after such a good first half.

"Sam Clucas had a stunning shot which I thought was flying in the top corner but just cleared the angle but that was about it.

"Nevertheless it's three points but it's all academic now."

Looking forward to the rest of the season the Bulls have two games against teams above them. Firstly on Tuesday it's a trip to Forest Green, then a week later Mansfield, who are second at present, visit Edgar Street.

"We are all hoping that the Mansfield game at Hereford - let's hope the situation is that they need to beat us to win the League, they need to win.

"They could bring 2000 or 3000. Excellent if it happens."

Results Round-Up

Kidderminster and Mansfield are in a two horse race for the title after today's results. The Harriers hold the lead by a point after a 3-0 win over Lincoln, with the Stags still holding two games in hand after their 4-0 win over Barrow. Wrexham can still win the title, but the chances are exceptionally slim after a 2-0 loss at Woking left them 11 points short of the top with 12 to play for. Newport's bore draw with Cambridge last night keeps them fourth but also out of the title race, with Grimsby salvaging a late draw, 2-2 with Southport, to continue to limp over the play-off line. Forest Green's chances of catching them are slimming after they lost 2-1 at Tamworth, leaving them needing to beat the Bulls on Tuesday to retain slim hopes.

At the bottom, Luton might have ended up in a relegation fight if they had given up the season a couple of weeks earlier. The Hatters went down 5-1 at Gateshead, leaving them with a record of one win in nine, with the Heed moving two points clear of the bottom four. Ebbsfleet could go down next weekend with the wrong results after a 1-1 draw with Nuneaton left them needing to make up 11 points with just 15 to play for. Already relegated Telford made it 30 games without a win after going down 2-0 at home to Dartford. Stockport moved out of the bottom four with a 3-2 win at Alfreton, with nine sides still trying to avoid the last two relegation places. In the other game Braintree beat Hyde 2-1.

In League Two, eight sides are still in relegation danger with most of them having just three games left. Aldershot, who didn't play, are bottom of the table but with two games in hand - the first at Port Vale (who spanked Burton 7-1 last night) on Tuesday. York are level on points with Torquay after they drew 1-1 with Accrington, while the Gulls lost 1-0 at Gillingham, who secured promotion to League One.  Stanley are two points clear of the bottom two along with Wimbledon and Barnet, after the Wombles lost 1-0 at Bristol Rovers, and the Bees lost 2-0 at home to Chesterfield. Plymouth's 2-0 win over Cheltenham moved them a further point clear.

And in Conf North, Chester FC are the first side to be guaranteed promotion to the Conference after winning today.

Clucas Strike Downs Silkmen

Sam Clucas' early strike was enough to give the Bulls a 1-0 win at Macclesfield in today's Conference match at Moss Rose.

The winger struck a 25 yard effort after just three minutes to give the Bulls a double over the managerless side. With Forest Green losing, the Bulls can move up to sixth in the table with a win at the New Lawn on Tuesday.

Full report later.

Newport Draw At Cambridge

Promotion contenders Newport County could only draw 0-0 at Cambridge this evening so virtually ending their hopes of automatic promotion. However they only need to take six points, at the most, from their last five games to be in the play-offs.

Top of the Conference:
1 Kidderminster 43 34 84
2 Mansfield 41 33 83
3 Wrexham 41 32 76
4 Newport 41 22 75
5 Grimsby 41 27 72
6 Forest Green 41 19 65
7 HEREFORD 41 5 60

VP Club Meeting Next Thursday

All members of the Hereford United VP club are invited to a meeting next Thursday April 11th to discuss the future of the club.

Recently Bulls' chairman David Keyte noted that the VP's contribution to club funds wasn't as high as it used to be.

The meeting is set to commence at 7pm.

News Round-Up

The Bulls' name will stay in the record books for a while longer after Mansfield lost 2-1 at Wrexham last night to see their winning run end at 12 games. The Stags took the lead but conceded twice afterwards, leaving Kidderminster still heading the table. The Stags have two games in hand on the Harriers and can seal the title with 11 points from their final five games.

Luton boss John Still will rotate managerial duties on matchday with his assistant as they go on scouting missions to identify summer signings. Still will miss this weekend's trek to Carlisle to face Gateshead to scout potential recruits instead. Coventry have lodged an appeal with the Football League over their 10 point penalty for entering Administration, with owners SISU still insisting that the company in Administration is not the club itself.

Newport kitman Tony Gilbert is retiring from the club after 38 years with the club in it's various forms. The 63 year old says he finds the role too difficult now, having also been groundsman, physio, and caretaker manager during his service.

Despite their relegation worries, York have returned a trio of players to their parent clubs. Aldershot pair Alex Rodman and Michael Rankine and Burton's John McGrath were on half-season loans and cannot play for their parent clubs this term, while the Minstermen still have to cover their wages. The trio were amongst eight loanees at Bootham Crescent, with the other five being regularly named in the matchday 16.

Foyle Hopes Wide Men Can Help Do the Double

Hereford United manager Martin Foyle is hopeful that his wide men can help 'do the double' over Macclesfield tomorrow.

"We'll go there full of confidence," Foyle told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"We've got the right personnel out wide to cause problems with their pace and energy.

"They work and track back in and make the formation work."

However Foyle mentioned that the change of manager at Silk Road might mean that the home side would want to put a bit extra effort into their game.

"They've just sacked their manager, so the information I've got goes out the window because someone else comes in and changes everything.

"It will be a harder game now because with someone new, players seem to find that extra 10%."

Meanwhile new youth coach, Peter Beadle, has been talking to H&W about the future.

"The aim is to bridge that gap and find one or two local gems that will get more people coming to watch," he said.

"The directors have backed the youth policy for the next two seasons so fair play to them for that."

Macc Fixture Usually Sees Managerial Change

When the Bulls face Macclesfield these days at least one of the sides usually has some managerial upheaval.

The opening day encounter this season saw both Martin Foyle and Steve King take charge of their first competitive encounters, while tomorrow will see John Askey take charge of the Silkmen after King's dismissal midweek. The one club man who first arrived at the club as a player in 1984, played over 700 games for the club before a variety of off-field roles including manager, assistant manager and, more recently, youth team boss.

Last season the Bulls unveiled Richard O'Kelly for their trip to Moss Rose, with a Will Evans thunderbolt coming in the first 60 seconds of his reign. In 2010 current Lincoln boss Gary Simpson took charge of his first game following Keith Alexander's death at Edgar Street, with John Trewick being sacked by the Bulls two days after.

The Bulls have drawn their last two trips to Moss Rose, but won only one of six visits. Theo Robinson's goal gave the Bulls the win in 2007 with former Bull Danny Thomas and then future Bull Jamie Tolley in the Silkmen squad.

Of their current squad, the Silkmen have former Bulls loanee Waide Fairhurst in their squad as well as a pair of former trialists. John-Paul Kissock played a friendly match for the Bulls in the summer of 2010, while Matthew Barnes-Homer played a reserve game in 2004.

Chester On Verge Of Conference Return

The reformed Chester are on the verge of a return to the Conference, and can seal promotion this weekend.

The Chester City outfit dropped out of the fifth tier, and out of business, in February 2010. The fans reformed Chester FC and began a surge back up the divisions.

In it's three year history the club has lost only ten league games, winning the NPL Division One North and Premier Division, and now sitting on top of Conf North having lost only one match all season. They are on 100 points, with +71 goal difference, and will be virtually assured promotion if they beat Boston on Saturday - which would be their 30th league game without defeat.

Meanwhile another reformed club has also reached 100 points in its debut season. Darlington are top of Northern League Division One having scored 129 goals - with a +97 difference - but will have to wait for promotion as second placed Spennymoor still have 16 games to play in the league, plus two cup finals and a semi-final, in the next month.

Conference 3 Up 3 Down - Petition

Savethemightyimps have set-up a petition to try and gain support for three promotion places from the Conference to League Two.

For 3 Up 3 Down Luton, Grimsby, Wrexham, Stockport, Mansfield, Newport, Cambridge, Kidderminster, Hereford, Dartford, Lincoln, Macclesfield, Nuneaton, Telford, Woking, Southport, Tamworth, Ebbsfleet, Alfreton, Forest Green, Hyde, Barrow, Braintree and Gateshead fans need to act now.

Please sign our petition  here and copy and paste this article onto your forums – even ask your clubs to put it on their official sites.

This is a call to arms, a fair and just fight for the right, nothing more nothing less from one fan to every other (and League fans too, if you have a sporting sense of right and wrong.)

The Big Bike Ride to Telford

Some months ago, a plan was hatched to get supporters on their bikes to the last away game of Hereford United's season which is at Telford on April 20th.

Rob Edwards, well known for his love of two-wheeled transport, is one of those hoping to make the trip.

"I've been toying with the idea of doing a longish bike ride for charity for a couple of years now, I used to do it a lot as a teenager, and did a few short rides last summer on a mountain bike," Rob told BN.

"I did suggest a Telford to Hereford bike ride when Hereford United's troubles back in the Autumn first got aired, but thought nothing more of it.

"Whether this had any bearing on the idea of doing the reverse route on the last day of the season, I don't know, but I jumped at the chance to be able to raise a bit of money for HUFC for something I enjoy doing.

"After the grand job the Malvern walkers did, hats off to them, I'd rather cycle 100 miles than walk 20, I'm hoping we can match what they did. I've already cycled over 400 miles since Feb 1st. I bought my first racer/road bike back in the mid to late 1980's.

"There are 36 people doing the ride on April 20th in 3 different groups depending on speed/ability, raising money for HUFC and the Hereford United Care in the Community Disability programme. My brother Greg is also doing the ride.

"To sponsor me, via paypal the email address is hufc@redwards.wanadoo.co.uk, and I will be in Addisons after the Gateshead match a week Saturday (April 13th) for anyone wanting to donate in cash."
