News Round Up

Leyton Orient have signed Luton striker Sam Parkin on loan until January with a view to a permanent move. One of the Hatters' biggest earners Parkin, who cost them £340,000 in 2006, missed half of last season injured. Huddersfield have loaned defender Tom Clarke to Bradford for a month. The 20 year old has made only one appearance, in the JPT, this season. The Terriers have also extended Liam Dickinson's loan from Derby for a third and final month.

Peterboro striker Craig Mackail-Smith is being lined up by West Brom for a £2million transfer, according to today's press reports with Blackburn also interested. Tranmere are to offer discounted tickets for current and former servicemen and women at tomorrow's match with Crewe. Walsall have joined a local schools scheme rewarding school attendance with tickets to matches.

Bournemouth chairman Jeff Mostyn has left the club in order for the remaining board to seek new investment. Stockport striker Matty McNeil will have final say whether a complaint will be made to the Police over the challenge that put him in hospital last weekend. Ex-Bull Stuart Watkiss has been confirmed as staying with new Grimsby boss Mike Newell as his assistant.

Northwich have sacked manager Dino Maamria after he was placed on 'gardening leave' last month. The situation remains unclear with Maamria unaware of the reasons and Northwich refusing to comment. Wrexham target Kiki Musampa has denied ever having any talks, or knowledge, of their bid. His brother, a football agent but not his representative, was a guest of the club but not in relation to the player.

Bulls 16th in 'Acheivers Report'

Hereford United have come in 16th in the Football Pools Acheivers league. The survey took into account the following to conduct its results:

  • The club’s ‘starting position’ in 1992
  • Stadium capacity and average attendances 1992-2008
  • Changes in club ownership and associated investments
  • Financial difficulties, including administration
  • Transfers in and out since 1992
  • League and Cup performances each season

Doncaster Rovers lead the way in the report, with Portsmouth and Reading close behind. In League One, Hereford are sixth with Cheltenham Town top of the table.

The following was said about Hereford:

"The Bulls joined the Football League in 1972, but for the majority of the Premier League era they occupied a spot in the Conference, after financial problems in 1996 forced them to sell players and relegation from Division Three followed.

The club, to their credit, stuck by long-serving manager Graham Turner (now in his 14th season at Edgar Street) and after nine seasons in non-league football they finally won promotion via the play-offs in 2006.

Their first season back was hardly impressive – finishing 16th – but last term they won automatic promotion to League One, the first time for 30 years they have been in the third tier of the football pyramid. It made them one of the biggest over-achievers of last season."

Berry on trial at Edgar Street

Hereford United are reported to have taken Tyrone Berry on trial.

The 21-year-old winger is training with The Bulls after being released by League Two Gillingham in September, after the transfer window closed. He joined the Gills pre-season and was given a short-term deal but he was released because of financial concerns at the club.

He started his career at Crystal Palace moving to Notts County on loan for a spell before joining Rushden and Diamonds in January 2006 where he spent 13 months before moving to Crawley and then Stevenage.

Preview: Bulls vs Stockport

The Bulls host their second match in five days when Stockport are the visitors to Edgar Street on Saturday.

The away side has triumphed in each of the last five matches between the two sides. The Bulls opened their second chapter of League football with a surprise 2-0 win despite overwhelming pressure back in August 2006, but Stockport returned the scoreline the following February. Last season a Lionel Ainsworth hat-trick gave the Bulls three points at Edgeley Park, but a solitary Liam Dickinson strike gave the Hatters revenge at Edgar Street in March.

The Bulls, buoyed by a pair of clean sheets and a morale boosting win over Carlisle, will go into Saturday's game looking for the points to climb out of the relegation zone. Saturday's match will be Bruno N'Gotty's last unless his loan is extended, and three clean sheets in his five matches so far suggesting he would be more than welcome for an extended stay. Sam Gwynne became the 23rd player to feature for the Bulls this season, and his introduction has helped the disciplined defence.

The Hatters' mid-table start has been thanks to their away form rather than their prowess at home. Unbeaten on their travels in the League this season, they have suffered defeat on the road in both cups so far, but goalscoring is not their best attribute after offloading all three forwards that managed double figures last season. A last minute own goal gave them victory over MK Dons last night, but £100,000 summer striker Peter Thompson has managed only two goals so far this season.

Hereford United vs Stockport County, Edgar Street, Saturday 25th October, 3.00pm.

Clubs Need To Take Action On Gates

Last night's very low gate, with nearly 800 less Bulls fans attending from the previous home League fixture, can be put down to a number of things.

The club occupying the bottom spot of the table didn't help, nor did the colder weather, but the credit crunch and Champions League football live on terrestrial television are probably the main reasons for such a dramatic fall in attendance.

With a second home match on Saturday, and the media screaming about the current financial turmoil, many will have had a choice of which game to watch rather that whether to go to both - if they have the money available to go to either game. However the offer of free football on the television would have been the real clincher to those caught in two minds.

Walsall recently had to withdraw an offer of free JPT tickets after season ticket holders complained, but many clubs are offering discounts where they have two home matches in a week. Kids for a Quid is back at Yeovil this Saturday after their home match last night, while Leyton Orient are offering a 50% discount on the second ticket when tickets for two home matches in four days are bought.

Repeatedly over the past few seasons I've written about the detrimental effect of ITV's coverage on Football League attendances, yet few clubs seem willing or able to change days to avoid what is an almost certain attendance drain. Of the 35 midweek FL fixtures this week only one is being played on Wednesday - and that is likely due to Chesterfield's proximity to Nottm Forest who played at home on Tuesday night.

At the moment the Bulls have two other clashes with terrestrial TV coverage. They visit MK Dons on November 25th, with both Arsenal and Man Utd on TV, before entertaining Bristol Rovers on March 10th on a night when the opening knockout round reaches it's climax. These games need to be moved, if only for financial reasons, rather than see attendances suffer again.

All football clubs need to act to protect their fanbases. Going to games is a habit and need to remain hooked.

Carlisle like Jekyll and Hyde says Ward

John Ward, the Carlisle manager, gave his thoughts on last night's game at Edgar Street to BBC Radio Cumbria.

"It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance from my team, we played pretty well in the first-half without capitalising on the possession that we had. Then in the second period we looked in disarray, and stopped doing the things that we were doing, and trying to improve upon them. Obviously then Hereford came onto the game themselves, they were the better team in the second-half and got the goal when they were on top, which we couldn't find when we were on top in the first period.

"We've made some pretty strange decisions in the second-half which we weren't doing in the first period. I find it really hard to explain or say why that has happened because it is the same group of players over one evening, in one 90 minutes, that have been so different.

"I can't defend Richard Keogh either, at half-time we were talking about decision making and keep your clear mind, and be patient with your football but be bright with it. We have done none of those things in the second period, not none of them, but we have done very few of them. Richard's situation just amplifies it really, it's a silly push, the guy (Steve Guinan) has gone down, he has got to go off, it's a red card. "

Willo gets an eight

Hereford United's Andy Williams was awarded an eight for his performance against Carlisle at Edgar Street this evening. The young striker had a useful game last Saturday at Brighton and his winning goal in tonight's game was well deserved.

Broadhurst, N'Gotty, Diagouraga, Gwynne, Taylor and Gwynne were given a seven each.

A very good win says Turner

In his post match interview Hereford United manager Graham Turner appeared very pleased with the three points.

"Fairly solid first half, we just let them get behind us the once," said Turner

"Second half I thought we played a little bit more, and opened them up. Dis appointing not to have got the second which would have meant we could have all enjoyed more of the game.

"Obviously tense when you're in the position we are in and only one up.

"But I thought we did extremely well and I'm terribly delighted for the players.

"Four points from the last two games, great return for us.

"Two clean sheets, vital if we are going to survive and do anything at this level. It has been a good few days.

"First half we got that shape we had at Brighton which served us well. Slightly different at home when we need to push on a bit more and I felt we did that going down the slope.

"Once the goal went in you could see that little bit of confidence come back. It's pleasing to see."

Results Round Up

Scunthorpe remain top despite a 1-1 draw with sixth placed Southend. Millwall move to the same points total after a 2-1 win at Colchester with Leicester only managing a 2-2 draw with Walsall. Leeds move to fourth after beating Leyton Orient 2-1, and Oldham are down to fifth after a 2-0 loss at Bristol Rovers. MK Dons stay seventh despite losing 2-1 at home to Stockport.

Down the bottom Crewe drop to the floor after losing 3-2 at Yeovil with the Glovers not escaping the bottom four either. Cheltenham lost 3-2 at Tranmere, but Swindon beat Northampton 2-1 to move on to 12 points. Brighton are a point better off after a goalless draw with Peterboro, but Huddersfield remain at the wrong end of the table after blowing three leads to go down 5-3 at Hartlepool.

In League Two Shrewsbury lost 2-1 at Accrington in front of just 1,249, two more than were at Macclesfield, while Chester were thumped for six by Rochdale - who also scored Chester's sole reply. Wycombe stay top after a 1-1 draw with Barnet after Bury blew their chance of the top with a 2-1 home loss to Rotherham.

Stats from Edgar Street

The main stat from Edgar Street has to be that Hereford United are no longer bottom of League One thanks to an Andy Williams goal.

18 Swindon 12 -6 12
19 Colchester 12 -7 11
20 Cheltenham 13 -15 11
21 Yeovil 11 -10 10
22 Leyton Orient 12 -11 9
23 Hereford 12 -11 9
24 Crewe 12 -12 8

Rather surprisingly possession was assessed as 45% to Hereford and 55% to Carlisle.

Shots on target: 4 for the Bulls and 5 for Carlisle

Shots off target: 6 for each side

Corners: 7 for the Bulls and 8 for Carlisle

Fouls: 10 by Hereford and 11 by Carlisle.

Steve Guinan received a yellow card for an incident which resulted in Carlisle's Keogh being sent off.

The attendance was a disappointing 2300 which included 174 following Carlisle.

Willo winner sinks Cumbrians

Hereford United gained their second victory of the season beating Carlisle United 1-0 at Edgar Street this evening. Andy Williams scored the only goal of the game fifteen minutes into the second half, before Richard Keogh saw red for a clash with Steve Guinan. 2,300 fans were in attendance, with a credible 174 making the long journey from Cumbria.

The Bulls kept the same side that picked up a point at Brighton, with Sam Gwynne preferred once again to Bradley Hudson-Odoi for a role on right-wing. Matty Done and Simon Johnson failed to return to the bench whilst the visitors included one time Wigan and Cardiff star Graham Kavanagh. One-time trialist Darren Campion started at left-back whilst Danny Graham started up top, looking to add to his 10 goals which sees him top the League One goalscoring charts.

The first-half was a lacklustre affair with both sides failing to create any clear-cut chances, although it was the away side who looked more threatening. In the opening moments, Simon Hackney's pass somehow found its way to Graham, but the striker wasn't clinical and Darren Randolph quickly closed him down inside the box. Minutes later, Graham controlled well twenty yards out and sent a shot on the turn past the post, whilst Luke Joyce poked wide from inside the area. Randolph did well to judge an awkward strike from Hackney, as he switched wings to the right, whilst former Morecambe striker Danny Carlton's cut-back was well dealt with by Karl Broadhurst. Clint Easton fired Hereford's first shot of the half over after a good-break from Williams down the right. At the other end, Randolph made a good close-range save to deny Keogh's header from a Kavanagh corner, before Williams did superbly to turn in the middle of the park before sending a low 30 yard drive goalwards but Ben Alnwick was equal to the effort.

The Bulls started the second period with attacking intent in similar fashion to Brighton on Saturday. An Easton free-kick was headed over by Guinan with Alnwick in no-man's land, whilst Bruno N'Gotty burst forward from the half-way line to test Alnwick with a powerful long shot. The breakthrough came on the sixtieth minute mark, with Williams grabbing his first goal since returning from Bristol Rovers on loan. Easton sent an out-swinging corner into the box, and the ball dropped in the box; Williams was the first-man to swing a boot at it and his powerful effort was past Alnwick before the on loan 'keeper could do anything about it. John Ward responded to going a goal down by bringing on Scott Dobie for Hackney.

Good work from Gwynne down the right saw him slip a pass through to Williams inside the box, but from a very acute angle, his effort was blocked by Alnwick's leg. From the resulting corner, Guinan failed to make a full connection after Richard Rose had flicked the ball on. Jennison Myrie-Williams added some pace to the faltering Carlisle attack, replacing Graham up top, and he looked threatening. However, his arrival was soon over-shadowed by a red-card shown to Keogh. The hard-working Guinan probed the defender as a ball headed out for a throw, and the defender reacted by turning and pushing Guinan to the floor.

Josh Gowling came on for Campion, who was struggling with camp but 10 men Carlisle started to create some half-chances towards the end of the match. Myrie-Williams kept Rose and Easton busy late-on, but couldn't hit the target with a left-foot shot from 20 yards, whilst a wicked deflection off Broadhurst on a Dobie shot made its way harmlessly through to Randolph. Williams may have added to his tally after forcing his way past David Raven on the by-line before shooting over, despite Guinan screaming for the ball in the middle. Myrie-Williams came close to grabbing a point for the Cumbrians after using his pace to cut in past Rose and Easton, but his left-footed shot hit the side-netting. Hereford ran down the clock by bringing on Hudson-Odoi for Williams, and soon after the game was over; United had their second victory of the season.

It wasn't the greatest game in terms of entertainment, but never the less, it was a hugely important win for The Bulls in front of a small crowd at Edgar Street. The partnership of Toumani Diagouraga and Kris Taylor played well once again whilst three clean sheets in the past four games give renewed optimism to Graham Turner and co. If Williams and his fellow strikers can hit some form then a climb out of the relegation zone is a possibility. Next up for United is a home match against Stockport on Saturday.

Hereford: Randolph, Jackson, Broadhurst, N'Gotty, Rose, Gwynne, Diagouraga, Taylor, Easton, Guinan, Williams.

Subs: Samson, Beckwith, Smith, Hudson-Odoi, Chadwick.

Carlisle: Alnwick, Raven, Keogh, Livesey, Campion, Taylor, Kavanagh, Joyce, Hackney, Carlton, Graham.

Subs: Williams, Gowling, Smith, Myrie-Williams, Dobie.

Shocking Defence, Tactically Poor...

...Carlisle were a right shambles as the Bulls registered only their second win of the season in tonight's League One match at Edgar Street to move off the foot of the table and to within two points of safety.

The only other thing shocking about the game was the attendance. Just 2,300 watched what can be classed as the best Bulls performance of the season as they contained - then threatened to overrun - last season's play-off contenders. Andy Williams' goal was sufficient in the end as the side that scored three against Peterboro never looked like repeating the feat, but the defence that conceded three in the same game was more than capable of an encore.

Full report later.

No H&W Coverage from Edgar Street This Evening

BBC Hereford and Worcester will not have any live updates from Edgar Street this evening on the game between Hereford United and Carlisle.

Whilst it is assumed someone will be at the game on their behalf, a spokesman for H&W has told Bulls News that no arrangments have been made for any updates during the Mike George programme which is on the air until just 9pm this evening when H&W closes for the day.

It will be the first time for many seasons that H&W have not covered a League game at Edgar Street.

Ward wary of Turner

Carlisle manager John Ward is wary of Graham Turner's Hereford United squad and believes he can steer them away from the bottom of League One.

“I remember the job he did at Wolves and he is a very astute manager who knows what he is doing,” Ward told the News and Star in advance of this evening's game at Edgar Street.

“We had them watched down at Brighton and although it was a poor game, Graham was delighted with his point.

“They are bottom of the league and in that sense there is an onus on us to try and win the game. But they will think they can beat us if we are not at it.”

Latest Odds from Skybet:

Hereford 2/1 Draw 12/5 Carlisle 11/8

Bulls hoping for second home win

Hereford United will be looking to add to their points tally this evening with three points from their home game against Carlisle kick-off 7.45pm. However they may have to be more attack minded after their largely defensive approach to last Saturday's game at Brighton which ended goal-less.

Manager Graham Turner believes the point gained at Brighton will help confidence in his squad.

“In training yesterday, you could see the players were a lot happier with themselves and we hope to take that forward into the Carlisle game," Turner told the Worcester News.

“It’s a tough task. They had a good campaign last season but have found the going difficult so far and we have got to take advantage of that.

“It was important we got our first away point and that, in the light of the Oldham performance and result, we gave a disciplined display.

“I was pleased to get a point but we had opportunities to have made it all three. I was pleased with the level of discipline and shape in the side which we have been lacking in recent games.”

Turner is expected to slightly shuffle his squad for this evening. Stephen O'Leary is available after his one match suspension and should return to mid-field with Kris Taylor moving sideways. Sam Gwynne will probably drop back to the bench.

Meanwhile Carlisle keeper Ben Alnwick thinks his side needs to 'do the dirty work' to get three points against the Bulls: "Every game is a massive one but going away to the bottom of the league side is an opportunity. We've got to go there and conduct ourselves well and if we play like we did against Peterborough I think we'll turn them over. But we've got to do the dirty work."

News Round Up

Cheltenham have offloaded defenders Michael Townsend to Barnet and Gavin Caines to Forest Green on loan. Hartlepool have settled their dispute with one of two newspapers banned from the ground. The Hartlepool Mail were banned over handing over their pictures to fellow paper the Northern Echo, who remain banned from the club.

Former Leeds director Simon Morris, a property developer who also tried to buy Boston, has been arrested over allegations of fraud and money laundering. His property company was declared bankrupt last week. At his peak the 31 year old was estimated to be worth £69million. Exeter boss Paul Tisdale has signed a new two year rolling contract with the club.

N'Gotty In Team Of The Week

Defender Bruno N'Gotty has become the first Bulls player to be named in the Football League Team of the Week this season for his display against Brighton.

He will have to keep up the good work tomorrow night after Carlisle saw striker Danny Graham and winger Simon Hackney also named in the team, along with two Northampton players.

Brown is a possible transfer target

The revelation that former Hereford United goalkeeper Wayne Brown, now with Bury, is being tracked by several clubs could mean that an offer for him might come in the transfer window next January.

However according to Sky Sports, Superman Brown is 'focused on doing his best' for Bury. His arrival at Gigg Lane has helped them have an impressive start to their season.

"I am very happy with how things are going at Bury at present," said Brown. "I only joined the club in the summer and I am thoroughly enjoying my time here.

"Of course it is flattering to be linked with other clubs higher up the league, but I am just going to get my head down and work hard as ever.

"We have made a good start to the season and I want to help Bury achieve success.

"Alan Knill and his coaching staff have helped me improve since my arrival and with any luck I will continue to do so.

"I was very unhappy not to keep a clean sheet on Saturday at Dagenham and I will be aiming to keep a clean sheet against Rotherham tomorrow night."

Andy D'Urso to Referee on Saturday

Andy D'Urso is set to referee at Edgar Street on Saturday when the Bulls take on Stockport.

D'Urso has been a National List referee since 1994 and in addition to spending seven seasons as a SG referee he was also a FIFA referee for four years. He has refereed the FA Charity Shield, the FA Youth Cup Final, and the League One Play Off Final in 2007.

He was last in charge of a game at Edgar Street when Cardiff were the opponents in FA Cup last January.

His previous visit was when Saturday's opponents Stockport County came to Edgar Street for a League Two game in February 2007.

Preview: Bulls vs Carlisle

The Bulls entertain Carlisle in a League One match at Edgar Street on Tuesday night.

It will be the first meeting of the two sides since the 2004/5 Conference season. Back then it was Carlisle who won promotion through the play-offs, with the two sides sharing a goalless draw at Edgar Street after the Cumbrian side beat the Bulls 3-1 at Brunton Park. Overall both sides have nine wins, with six draws.

Having collected a first away point with a disciplined performance the Bulls will be looking for results at the other end of the pitch. A was it/wasn't it goal in the JPT and a penalty have been the only goals to cheer in the last seven games, and chances through those matches have been very limited.

The Cumbrians will come to Edgar Street looking for three points to halt a dismal slide down the table. After securing 13 of the first 15 points this season they have collected just one point from a possible 18, and conceded at least twice in each of those six games. Striker Danny Graham, a former Middlesboro trainee, has scored ten already this season after seventeen last term.

Hereford United vs Carlisle United, Edgar Street, Tuesday 21st October, 7.45pm.

News Round Up

Leyton Orient are to give fans a discount on their two home games in four days at the end of the month. Anyone buying tickets for both matches will save up to £11 on the pair. Yeovil have agreed terms to make Gary Roberts' loan spell from Crewe into a permanent deal. Cheltenham have signed Leicester winger Jonny Hayes on loan. He is the third Leicester player to join the Robins on loan, and the eighth current loan player.

Luton are being eyed up for another takeover according to national press reports, with Dragons Den tycoon James Caan reported to be interested. Peterboro are being reported to the FA after they signed Ebbsfleet striker Kwesi Appiah on non-contract terms. The Posh put in seven days notice on the player, but he had already been training with them when it was done and Ebbsfleet want compensation. The Posh have signed full back Craig Braham-Barrett for £10,000 from Conf South side Welling.

Youth Cup Date Announced

Hereford United Youth team will meet the Yeovil Town Youth team in the first round of the FA Youth Cup at Huish Park on Wednesday 29th October 2008 with a 7.00pm kick off.

Savage has a Moan at the Bulls

It was Robbie Savage's 34th birthday last Saturday, but the on-loan midfielder at Brighton couldn't celebrate in style as his side failed to take all three points from the Bulls.

He has spoken to the Argus about the opposition.

“I just thought from the first minute you could see they had come for a point.

“It’s not as if we’re Man United. They have come here with a gameplan – get everybody behind the ball.

“The manager, the subs, their own fans were even behind the ball at times.

“I’ve never experienced anything like that before in my life.

“I play football to enjoy it and to play. Fair play to Graham Turner, the manager. I respect him greatly and what he has done for that football club is fantastic.

“You can understand why he has done it. They got beat 4-0 at Oldham and are bottom of the league.

“But for me football is about enjoyment and having a go. We haven’t won at home all season and they have just come for a point.

“You can see why they are bottom of the league because they have just come and not had a go.”

The highlights from the game are now available to view on Virgin Media.

Carlisle set off early for Herefordshire

Carlisle's loan signing Graham Kavanagh scored their third goal yesterday against Peterborough but having gone 3-1 ahead they couldn't hold onto the lead and the game was drawn.

Kavanagh, a former Cardiff City player before moving to Wigan and now with Sunderland United, thought that Carlisle were currently short of confidence.

He spoke about Tuesday's game at Edgar Street

"Hereford may be bottom of the division," said Kavanagh. "But we can't allow any complacency to creep in about that. It doesn't mean that just because they are bottom we are going to get our first win for a while, it just doesn't work like that.

"We're going down there on Monday, so we'll be able to get there and settle in ahead of the game, which I think is the right thing to do. That should mean that we'll be in full focus for Tuesday."

Meanwhile manager John Ward has also spoken about Tuesday's game.

"We have to dig deep again now for Tuesday, but if we reproduce that attitude and that type of performance at Hereford then we will be alright."

Ward was manager at Cheltenham when Steve Guinan was playing for them.

Finally Dean Whitestone will be the man in the middle for Tuesday evening's game. He last refereed a Hereford United game at Darlington last April when the Bulls won 1-0.

However he will be best remembered for being in charge of the Conference Play-off final at Leicester when Hereford United gained their promotion to League Two back in May 2006.

News Round Up

Crewe fans paraded a banner against manager Steve Holland prior to yesterday's draw with MK Dons. Holland has vowed to remain in the job. Huddersfield striker Andy Booth has been ruled out until the New Year as he requires surgery on a long standing back injury. The cull at Grays has begun, with coaches Neil Smith and Tim O'Shea leaving and midfielder Mark Molesley joining Bournemouth on loan.

Millwall have loaned striker Gary Bowes to Ebbsfleet. Weymouth have admitted to 'difficult' trading conditions after releasing accounts for the season before last. They show a £1.2million profit - but only after a £2.6million loan from former Chairman Martyn Harrison was written off. It is estimated that they lost £750,000.

Oldham have loaned forward Chris O'Grady to Bury for a month. O'Grady was the one Rotherham player to opt to leave the club rather than take a pay cut during last season's troubles. Peterboro defender Shane Blackett may miss three months after dislocating his shoulder for the second time in a month. Doctors will assess the injury and may decided to insert a pin, similar to the work done on Ben Smith during his first Bulls spell.

Southend have agreed a link up with German second division side St Pauli. The two clubs will swap youth talent for training purposes in a similar vein to their existing agreement with Spanish side CD Javea.

Gannon To Shop Ref To The Police

Stockport boss Jim Gannon accused referee Darren Deadman of endangering the safety of his players during yesterday's match with Colchester, and will take the matter up with the Police.

Hatters forward Matty McNeil ended up in hospital with concussion after a particularly bad challenge that earned Colchester man Paul Reid a yellow card, but Gannon thinks more should have been done to curb the U's physical approach to the game:

"The more you look at it the more you realise the player had no intention to play the ball. We have decided to provide the police with video evidence plus photographs of injuries to our players and we hope they take action.

"Unfortunately, we're in a game now, where the manner in which games are being refereed threatens the safety of the players. Until someone makes a stand we're going to consistently have poor decisions like that. We've informed the referee of the action we'd like to take.

"During the game I told him that I felt his decisions were endangering players' safety. I made it quite clear to him at half-time and we have the tape of that and we'll be using that as part of the evidence. Unfortunately players can go round seriously injuring players on the pitch and the Referees Association and the FA take no action.

I can only imagine the way Paul Lambert prepares his team against our young players - we've seen history of it in the past - and I can only imagine the comments he's made to his players."

Gannon lodged a complaint three weeks ago with the FA about bias against his side. The FA agreed to consider the issue. Referee Deadman, who refereed the Bulls at home to Yeovil in August, issued four yellow cards to Colchester yesterday and had sent off five players in his previous six games.

Colchester boss Paul Lambert's post match comments included the line: "There's no point in having all the ability in the world if you're not prepared to get hurt" in praising his players' level of commitment in the match.
