Horwood to Referee Local Derby

Graham Horwood from Bedfordshire is set to referee tomorrow evening's League Two local derby between Hereford United and Shrewsbury Town.

John Trewick, the Hereford United manager, must be hoping that Horwood will be on top of the game after, in Trewick's opinion, the last two referres officiating games involving the Bulls have made decisions that have gone against his side.

The last time Horwood officiated at Edgar Street was last February when Leeds were defeated by the Bulls 2-0.

To date this season Horwood has been in charge of 14 games in which he has dealt out 36 yellow and 2 red cards.

Preview: Bulls vs Shrewsbury

The Bulls entertain A49 rivals Shrewsbury on Tuesday night in League Two action.

The Bulls recorded their first League double over the Shrews the last season the two sides met. In 07/08, with the Bulls unlikely promotion material and the Shrews again falling short despite their massive resources, the Bulls claimed all six points with a 2-1 win at the Prostar following up a 3-1 win at Edgar Street. Those two wins doubled the total wins from League games against the Shrews in 16 attempts.

The Bulls will look to stretch their unbeaten home record into double figures tomorrow night. In all competitions they have nine matches unbeaten including top three sides Dagenham and Bournemouth failing to extract three points from their visits to Edgar Street. With Mathieu Manset back in contention and a reborn Leon Constantine being joined by the lively Gavin McCallum it will be anyone's guess who will start up top. One thing is likely, the Bulls will probably revent to play wingers with Marc Pugh - six goals in 12 League appearances this term - particularly keen to play against his former employers.

Shrewsbury come into the game on the back of three straight 1-1 draws, and just one win in seven League games including a loss to bottom side Darlington. Their summer striker arrivals have been told to go after disappointing this season, while their keeper problems mirror the Bulls from last season with David Button becoming the fifth keeper to be named in a matchday squad already this term. Top scorer Dave Hibbert has eight goals, but he has been paired with a string of misfiring partners to put another promotion attempt in jeopardy.

Hereford United vs Shrewsbury Town, Edgar Street, Tuesday November 24th, 7.45pm.

Constantine or Manset

Hereford United manager John Trewick faces a couple of decisions before announcing his side to meet Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

The 'beast', Mathieu Manset, is available again after his three match ban however Leon Constantine, who has come back into the team, scored twice yesterday but was implicated in the penalty decision from which Burton scored their second goal. It was difficult to see from the away end whether referee Whitestone made the correct call and the television pictures didn't help either. However Trewick wasn't at all happy with Whitestone's decision and may decide to give Constantine, who otherwise had his best game since joining the Bulls, the nod over Manset

Ryan Green may be available for the game. His presence was missed yesterday. He had travelled with the squad but failed a late fitness test.

Trewick is expected to revert to a 4-4-2 system for the game having used a 3-5-2 system for the last two, admittedly away, games. The jury appears to be out on whether 3-5-2 worked especially as the Bulls conceded two goals yesterday from poor marking.

One player who will hope to be included in the starting eleven is former Shrewsbury winger Marc Pugh. With the 3-5-2 system Pugh has had to be content with a place of the bench, although he did get three or four minutes right at the end of yesterday's game. Too little too late some might say.

Pugh joined the Bulls on loan in late March. He left Shrewsbury by mutual consent after failing to play regularily under former manager Paul Simpson. A permanent move was announced at the end of June. He's looking forward to the match.

"Derby games are always great to play in," Pugh told the Hereford Times.

"Hopefully, it will be a big crowd with an excellent atmosphere and a lively pace to the game.

"I feel that I have a point to prove and I want to show my old manager he was wrong about me.

"It would be really nice to beat Shrewsbury."

Tickets for Shrewsbury Match Available

Tuesday evening's home match against Shrewsbury Town is unlikely to be a sell-out unless there are more ticket sales tomorrow (Monday) to Hereford United supporters.

It looks as though Shrewsbury supporters will take up all, or virtually all, of their allocation of 665 tickets. 233 of these are standing and 432 seated tickets. This should ensure a good atmosphere at the game.

As regards the level of Hereford support, the club said on Friday that there were still tickets available. It is assumed this means availability in all areas of the ground. Supporters have until 4pm tomorrow to purchase tickets.

The capacity of Edgar Street (pictured) has been reduced this season and it is difficult to be certain what the capacity now is. A figure of 5250 has been suggested but not confirmed. It may be less.

Bulls rocked by late winner

Hereford lost out by the odd goal of five at The Pirelli Stadium this afternoon as Burton’s late strike saw them win 3-2 following a goal-less first period.

The Bulls team saw just one change from the Barnet game with Richard Rose coming in to replace Ryan Green who had failed to recover from his dead-leg injury. Tony James lined up for Burton against his former employers.

The Brewers made the better start to the game with debutant loan signing Keiron Cadogan cut in from the right to test Bartlett with a crisp effort from the edge of the box in the early minutes before a dangerous driven cross from Austin was headed away by Darren Jones. Burton continued to have the territorial advantage as The Bulls' wingbacks, Valentine and Lowe, held back to provide what was often a five-man back division while they saw out the opening quarter. A long range strike from former Kiddyfiddler Russell Penn was pushed out by Bartlett and Shaun Harrad's effort was kept out by a well timed block from Rose.

In the eighteenth minute, The Bulls mustered their first threat on goal when Valentine’s curling free kick was punched away by home keeper Krysiak. A Harrad drive flashed across the goalmouth before a cross from the left cannoned off a defender foot into the path of Penn whose 18-yarder was blocked by Blanchett.

Having defended well for thirty minutes, The Bulls pushed on in the final 15 of the first half creating several opportunities of their own. Valentine, making probably his first real forward run, provided a fine cross to the back post which was met by a McCallum header which Krysiak could only parry back to The Bulls striker whose well struck shot was tipped away at full stretch by the recovering keeper. Constantine then fired just wide from 20 yards and King had an effort blocked on the line. Tony James showed good anticipation coming across to clear when McCallum and King had played a one-two round his centre-back partner Branston. At the other end, Bartlett was quick to react when a defensive scramble left Simpson one on one in the six-yard box. Kenny Lunt then picked out Constantine who fired over from 18 yards as The Bulls finished the half in the ascendancy.

HT Burton 0 HUFC 0

Sloppy defending by Branston in the opening minutes of the second period allowed Constantine to feed King but the Leicester man's effort was again beaten away the Krysiak. Then, in the 50th minute, the home side grabbed the lead following some poor defensive play by The Bulls. Austin lifted a hopeful ball into the box and despite the close attentions of three defenders, Harrad found the time and space to control the ball at the third attempt, turn and fire passed Bartlett from inside the box. This was the first of five goals in an eventful second half. Just ten minutes later, The Bulls were back on level terms. A diagonal ball towards the right corner found McCallum on the break. The youngster showed great composure controlling the ball on his chest before flicking it passed Branston and delivering an inch perfect cross that left Constantine with the simple job of nodding into an empty net from the back post.

The Bulls joy was, however, to be short lived. An innocuous Burton corner was nodded down by Webster with Constantine in close attendance. The ball struck the strikers arm from no more than a yard and the referee harshly awarded a spot-kick despite Constantine having his arm by his side and making no movement towards the ball. How the ref could expect him to avoid the contact from point blank range is anyone's guess but Harrad dispatched the penalty into the corner of the net. The Bulls were quickly back on the attack with Lowe bringing a fine save from the home keeper following a neat move involving Lunt and McCallum. The same pair were involved when United again drew level. McCallum fed Lunt near the right byeline and The Bulls’ midfielder showed a deft touch to wrong-foot the defender and send a teasing cross to the back post. Valentine was on hand to hook the ball back across the goalmouth where Constantine was on hand to notch his second headed goal of the game. Shortly afterwards, the industrious McCallum again showed good chest control as he layed-off to Valentine but the wing-backs driven cross just evaded the advancing Constantine. Then, as the game approached the final minutes, Burton were awarded a soft free kick just inside the United half from which a second fatal defensive error resulted in the final and winning goal. John McGrath launched a hopeful punt towards the back post which the unmarked Aaron Webster headed passed Bartlett from close range. Despite having only a couple of minutes left on the clock, The Bulls still had time to fashion a couple of late efforts. Darren Jones produced a thunderous drive that Krysiak tipped round the post and from the resulting corner; Richard Rose was inches away from heading a leveller.

FT Burton 3 HUFC 2

So, a couple of defensive lapses and a hotly disputed penalty against two well worked Bulls replies saw Hereford return empty-handed when the performance probably deserved a point at least. Having started cautiously, United had certainly finished the first half looking the more likely to score. The team competed well in the second period also but once again were frustrated by an official who failed to apply the required ounce of common sense to his decision making process. The late introduction of wingers Done and Pugh was maybe asking too much when a fifteen minute run might have produced more while the calmness and experience of Ryan Green was clearly missed. Bring on The Slops.

Vaughan Sells To Vaughan

Stephen Vaughan has sold Chester City to Stephen Vaughan, junior.

The move was announced today with Vaughan senior telling local radio he had sold 100% of the club to his namesake son who is a player at the Deva Stadium, albeit on loan at Northwich currently. Vaughan also described former Bournemouth chairman Paul Baker's bid for the club as 'silly'.

The 'sale' may yet incur the wrath of the FA as Vaughan junior was a director of the club when it went into Administration in the summer, as Vaughan senior conveniently sidestepped another bust club, and there is certain to be an in-depth investigation into the deal and whether Vaughan senior has actually backed away from the club.

Today's 3-1 home loss to Altrincham was watched by just 842 home fans, and more are threatening to walk away with this latest twist to the Vaughan saga. Vaughan junior is as popular as his father with the Chester faithful, whose vitriol from the stands has seen the player depart three times on loan in an effort to continue his career unhindered.

I'm 31 not 33 says James

Tony James, the former Hereford United defender now with Burton, was interviewed after this afternoon's game.

"We've been very good at home this season so far and showed a lot of quality today," James told BBC H&W.

"We conceded a few sloppy goals but all in all a good performance.

"There weren't too many efforts on target first half but it opened up a bit more in the second half when the both teams really went for it.

"I've been looking forward to playing Hereford since I left four years ago. It's the right result for me.

James, whose one child was a mascot this afternoon, still lives in Hereford.

"I've been to watch a couple of games (at Edgar Street) when I've had a chance. I'm always there. I have friends at the club."

Keith Hall, the interviewer, then made an unusual slip during a remark about James now playing in the Football League despite being 33 years old.

"31 actually pal, don't make me too old," said James.

"I'm really enjoying this season. It's been a good challenge."

"

Managers Thoughts from Burton

Here are a few of the quotes from both managers following the game at Burton.

Paul Peschisolido for Burton:

"I thought we were good today, defensively we could have blown it at the end.

"For the majority of the game, the whole team performance and the lads' never say die attitude was superb.

"We had goals from set pieces as well so we had it all today."

A very disappointed John Trewick for Hereford who after the interview was off to see the referee.

"We shouldn't have lost the game. I'm very annoyed we have. Some absolutely shocking defending has cost us. The referee, once again, has cost us," Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Burton were given a penalty after a hand-ball by Leon Constantine but Trewick was far from convinced.

"I don't know how he can put that as a deliberate hand-ball. I'm going to see him in a minute.

"We were the better side in the second half. We took the game to them, created the best opportunities, passed the ball better than them and we lost.

"We conceded three in 45 minutes - that's not going to get you anywhere. We scored two goals away from home - we should be going back with three points.

"For the first goal we defended very very badly. We allowed a situation to develope that should not happen and all that's down to is concentration.

"The second goal, how he can say it's a deliberate hand-ball I don't know. Sometimes the game is cruel. It's supposed to be hand to ball. Where was his hand? Above his head? I didn't see it.

"My first impression was that it's a very very harsh penalty."

Smith had a previous loan at Wycombe this term while Zebroski, a former Bulls trialist, spent the 07/08 season at Plainmoor where he scored 19 times. Port Vale lost £280,000 last season, despite cutting £600,000 from their playing budget. The budget was cut to £1.12million, but it only saw lossed cut by £100,000 from the previous season. They report total debts of over £3.5million.

Morecambe are cashing in on their move to a new stadium. They will produce a souvenir programme at their last home game costing £8, and then sell off the turf in 3ft strips from £3.50.

The Away Win Will Come - Trewick

Hereford United manager John Trewick thinks the Bulls will soon collect their first away win of the season and it could be at Burton tomorrow.

"I'm expecting a tough game but I know if we play the same as we did the previous Saturday at Barnet, then we've got a real chance of getting a win," Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I'm sure they will be looking at us and planning their game plan around how they see us. We'll be doing the same.

"The away win will come sooner rather than later, so if we can maintain the level we're at and look to build on it, we'll be fine.

"We are an improving side."

Big Trev On Move Again

Ex-Bull Trevor Benjamin is on the move again, swapping Conf North for Conf South.

'Much travelled' no longer does the man justice, with his move from Harrogate to Woking meaning he has represented 24 clubs in his career plus countless others on trial basis. Eight of those sides have come since his one year spell at Edgar Street, which ended only 18 months ago.

Benjamin scored three times in five games for relegation threatened Harrogate. Woking are currently fourth in Conf South.

Another ex-Bull on the move is Anwar Uddin, who has been forced to end his loan spell at Grays due to injury and return to Dagenham. Bradley Hudson-Odoi, who was hoping for a loan at Grays, is not expected to complete the deal after the Daggers loaned them forward Billy Bingham instead.

Brewers confirm Cadogan signing

Burton Boss, Paul Peschisolido, has taken nineteen year-old winger Keiron Cadogan on loan from Crystal Palace ahead of tomorrow’s match against The Bulls.
Cadogan scored on his senior debut foe Palace last season and is regarded as a hot prospect. Peschisolido said: "He's highly regarded and has been flying in their reserves scoring left, right and centre. He's got a very bright future. I’ve spoken to Neil Warnock about him and he's kindly agreed to let us have him on loan for a month. I'm quite excited about it."

Green/Valentine Face Injury Tests

Both Ryan Green and Ryan Valentine face fitness tests prior to tomorrow's match with Burton Albion.

Green is reported to have a dead leg following the Barnet match, while Valentine has also reported as doubtful with a little niggle. Apart from long term injury victim Craig Jones the Bulls squad reports fit, while Mathieu Manset will miss the final match of his ban as the only other absentee.

Burton report that defender Paul Boertien and winger Keith Gilroy are in contention after injury. Boertien has missed the last month with a knee problem while Gilroy, one of the more influential players from last season's team, is yet to play this season after picking up an injury in pre-season.

Manager Paul Peschisolido may play two wingers against the Bulls if Gilroy is fit, with Jimmy Phillips on the other flank, or he may have Crystal Palace winger Kieron Cadogan available if they can finalise a loan deal in time.

Peschisolido, a former striker himself, has told his players to shoot on sight tomorrow: "I think the best strikers are greedy. I was called greedy for the whole of my career! Sometimes, our lads are a bit pretty-pretty on the ball when we need someone who's going to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

"When they get the ball in the last third, I want them to say 'I'm going for goal.' We have the loveliest, nicest bunch of players here and I really believe in them as a group.

"They train hard, work hard and get on with each other. But I just want them to be a bit nastier. I'm never going to criticise a player for shooting and missing – you'll never get a goal if you don't take a shot."

News Round Up

Cheltenham have signed West Brom midfielder Joss Labadie on a months loan. The youngster recently ended a spell at Shrewsbury due to 'attitude problems'. Bradford have nicked Norwich winger Simon Whaley from Rochdale, where he had just spent two months on loan. Whaley has signed a one month loan at Valley Parade.

Darlington have told four players they can leave the club. The Quakers have not named the four, but local reports suggest they are David Knight, Paul Arnison, Matt Plummer, and Mark Convery who were all left out of last week's match squad despite being fit. Rochdale have signed Rotherham midfielder Jason Taylor on a months loan.

FA Cup opponents Colchester have loaned defender Pat Baldwin to Bristol Rovers until January. Their former player of the year is deemed surplus to requirements despite only signing a new three year deal in the summer. Shrewsbury have signed Spurs keeper David Button on a six week loan. He was last at Crewe but was sent back by Dario Gradi as not being up to the job and replaced by Steve Phillips, who he now replaces at the Prostar.

Torquay have loaned striker Ben Joyce to Forest Green until January. Matt Clarke's Halesowen are set to come out of Administration after a sucessful bid for the club from brothers Godfrey and Graham Ingram. Godfrey is a former footballer, who spent ten years in America playing in their indoor league.

Turner Gets Awards

Graham Turner has been handed two awards this week in recognition of his managerial career.

Firstly he attended a League Managers Association Hall of Fame dinner where he was honoured as part of their 1,000 club, for the 18 managers that had a managerial career of more than 1,000 games.

Then, yesterday, Wolves announced that Turner would be inducted into their own Hall of Fame. Turner

He told Wolves' official site: "To have managed the club which I supported as a boy meant so much to me, and to now go on and be recognised in this manner by being inducted into the Wolves Hall of Fame is something really special.

"I am absolutely delighted and very proud to receive the honour. You never ever lose that affinity for the club you support and my time at Wolves provided some of the most memorable moments of my career."

Turner isn't the only ex-Bulls manager to be inducted in the ceremony on January 14th. Mike Bailey, who was player-manager at Edgar Street during the 1978/9 season, is to also be inducted after spending 11 years at Molineux.

The pair will join ex-Bull Steve Bull, who was amongst the first batch of former stars to be inducted last year.

Meanwhile ex-Bull Marcus Palmer has joined Evesham United on non-contract terms, with Forest Green retaining his Conference registration. The Zamaretto Premier League side have scored only 13 goals this season with manager Paul West telling the Berrows Journal: "It's important not to put pressure on him but we need to improve 10-fold in that area. At the back we have the second meanest defence in the league but we need to score more goals."

Slops close to selling ticket allocation.

Having been sent a total of 665 tickets for the forthcoming "A49" match at Edgar Street (233 standing and 432 seats), their Official Site is today reporting that just a small number (about 50) will go on general sale.

Earlier sales had been restricted to Season Ticket holders and those with 40 or more loyalty points. All standing tickets have already been sold.

Hudson-Odoi In 'Last Chance Saloon'

Ex-Bull Bradley Hudson-Odoi is facing a January exit from Histon unless he proves his worth.

He hasn't appeared for Histon for two months, and has only started one game since arriving at the club in August. Manager Steve Fallon told the Cambridge News:

"We're looking to get Bradley out on loan. He's a good player, but he's got to get his head right. He needs to get himself a run of games and get himself some fitness and do well. Then there's a chance of him coming back. Hopefully if we can get him out to Grays he can go there and play a few games, and come back and be the player we know he can be. We've spoken to Grays and they're interested. It's down to coming to an agreement and if we can do that he'll go there for a month."

Hudson-Odoi is out of contract in the New Year, and the club are likely to dispense with his services if matters do not improve as new chairman Tony Roach believes the club will lose £260,000 this season.

News Round Up

Grimsby have loaned striker Michael Coulson from Barnsley for a month. The 21 year old has just finished a spell at Chester, where he scored once in five games. They have also taken Hull midfielder Nicky Featherstone for a month. Featherstone has made a handful of sub appearances, two of them in the Carling Cup this season. Chesterfield have loaned young striker Jordan Bowery to Barrow until January. He has been a regular sub for the Spirites this season, scoring once in 16 appearances.

Rochdale boss Keith Hill has admitted he may have to sell players in the January window in order to balance the books. He has already had to sell Adam Le Fondre this season to keep an even keel. The Dale have signed Hull midfielder Will Atkinson on loan for a month. Notts County have been turned down by defender Elliott Ward after Coventry told him he could leave.

Darlington have signed midfielder Jonathan Hogg on loan from Aston Villa. The 20 year old joins until January. Macclesfield boss Keith Alexander doesn't expect to make any January moves due to budgetary restraints. Rotherham have confirmed the signing of free agent Gary Roberts on a month long contract. The Millers have failed in a loan move for Leeds striker Enoch Showumni as the player wants to move abroad.

Ex-Bull Sammy Igoe will take on a part-time training schedule as an ongoing knee injury is causing discomfort, but Bournemouth's transfer embargo means they cannot do without him. Chester's players are reported not to have trained on either Tuesday or Wednesday this week, with strong rumours that many of them have not been paid.

Chesterfield defender Gregor Robertson has been released from hospital, a week after suffering a serious leg break in their JPT match with Carlisle. He is expected to miss the season, and will see a specialist next week. Cheltenham have ended the loan of midfielder Oliver Bozanic early after Reading and the Robins agreed the player would not recover from injury before the loan expired in January.

Recent FA Trophy winners Burscough are six weeks away from closure according to supporters. Wealthy backer Chris Lloyd, who funded their FA Trophy run, has walked away from the club leaving the Supporters Club as the only resource - and their money will run out by Christmas. Northampton have signed Middlesboro midfielder Josh Walker. The 19 year old has captained England from u16 to u19 level, and has played in Europe for Aberdeen during a loan spell last season.

Bulls Get Highlights Boost

The Bulls FA Cup Secound Round match with Colchester is to be a featured highlight on ITV.

The November 28th match will now earn each side £6,750 in TV rights when it is shown in detail on their Saturday night highlights show. ITV have also confirmed that the Third Round draw will take place the day after at 3.55pm.

James Looks Forward To First Bulls Encounter

Former Bulls captain Tony James has spoken to the Derby Telegraph, looking forward to his first time playing against the Bulls:

He reflects on being released from Edgar Street: "It was very disappointing at the time, having been at Hereford for so long. I wanted to play in the Football League but things happen and, to be honest, they've turned out very well for me since. I had a couple of injuries during the season, so it wasn't ideal. I wasn't fit and had to sit out the run-in.

"But, to be honest, I had been getting a bit frustrated and it was probably time for a change. I didn't leave the club with any animosity. I sat down and talked to the manager and we agreed that I needed something new in my career – I'd been there too long and gone stale. But I enjoyed myself at Hereford; you'd have to to stay at a club for eight years and, of course, it helped being an established member of the team.

"I've been looking forward to playing against them since I've left – not because I have anything to prove, just that everyone likes to play against their old club, especially if they'd been there a long time."

Hereford Youngsters Bow Out In Cup

Bulls fan Tom Jackson was in the crowd at St Mary's tonight, and gives us this report of the game:

An inspired display from Sam Hoskins on a cold November evening meant that Southampton under 18’s booked their place in the Youth FA Cup 3rd round at the expense of Hereford United. Hoskins scored four goals at the St. Mary’s Stadium as Southampton ended up putting six past the away team without reply.

The game began brightly with both having a half chance in the opening stages. First Southampton’s left winger Preen dragged a shot wide in the 3rd minute. 30 seconds later indecision between Southampton’s keeper, Dovey, and center back Robinson almost allowed Hereford’s Aiden Thomas to sneak in.

From then on, however, Southampton’s class shone through. With Hereford’s defence playing very narrow there was plenty of space in the wide areas for McLean and Preen to exploit. It took until the 17th minute for Hoskins to notch his first and the first goal of the game. McLean was given far too much room on the right hand side. He proceeded to beat Matapo and Loftus before sliding the ball acroos the six yard box for an unmarked Hoskins to lash in.

Just 90 seconds later Southampton were two ahead as Keegan latched ontop a long ball and impressively held off Loftus before beating Gwynne low to his left. Southampton continued to dominate and were unfortunate not to go three up as McLean again beat two defenders. His shot, however, went wide of the right upright by inches. With swift counter attacking football the key to Southampton’s success, Preen almost added Southampton’s third but could only shoot across the face of the goal.

With the pressure mounting Hereford conceded with just three minutes remaining in the first half. It was Hoskins who grabbed his second. Picking a loose ball up on the outside of the box, the diminutive forward drove past the defender and drilled it into the corner to give the Saints a comfortable half time lead.

The start of the second half saw a rejuvenated Bulls team come close toscoring as Thomas fired in 20 yard shot which was smartly turned over by the keeper Dovey. This rejuvenation only lasted a mere five minutes, however, as in the 51st minute the pace and highly impressive McLean added the fourth goal. It was far too easy for McLean as he raced on to header from the back and slotted it past Gwynne.

Southampton continued to swarm over Hereford and could have added a fifth if had not have been for Jo Lemar to clear a header off the line. McLean conitued to cause problems with his electrifying pace and it must have been a relief to see the winger taken off after 67 minutes. Hereford’s misery didn’t end though as Hoskins completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute to put Southampton five ahead. It was tidy finish from the youngster who found room on the edge of the area to drive the ball past Gwynne.

Southampton continued to look for more and were thwarted by several good saves by Gwynne. But the Saints weren’t to be denied a sixth and final goal as 11 minutes from time Hoskins added a fourth with a simple tap in from 2 yards.

The game petered out to its conclusion and Hereford’s abysmal night was summed up by Thomas failing to get a toe end on a cross when it seemed easier to score. Overall it was a rather a disappointing way for the young Bulls to bowout in this year’s competition. Meanwhile Southampton now face a trip to Queens Park Rangers in the 3rd round.

Ainsworth Charges Dropped

Ex-Bull Lionel Ainsworth has been cleared of affray charges after the prosecution offered no evidence against him.

The tricky winger was arrested in March along with two relatives over an affray that was claimed to be connected with the death of his cousin in January but, after two days of legal arguments, the prosecution could offer no evidence and the charges were dismissed against all three.

Ainsworth's time at current club Huddersfield has been blighted by the incidents. He was recalled by Watford from the final game of his loan spell at Edgar Street on the weekend his cousin was attacked, and has started only nine of 41 games for the Terriers since.

Meanwhile former trialist Franck Padovani has left Hayes and Yeading after failing to break into the first team. He made only one appearance, in the Middlesex Senior Cup.

Brewers Need A Striker

Burton manager Paul Peschisolido wants to bring a striker in on loan before the weekend, but will not be rushed into a panic signing.

After failing to bag one potential signing last week, Peschisolido acknowledged that their failure to score against Darlington meant reinforcements were needed. He told the press: "I am trying really hard. It is not easy to find strikers who are going to score you goals unless you take a gamble somewhere. Most strikers who are scoring goals are in teams somewhere and unavailable, but we are looking.

"The manager I spoke to about a player last week has still not come back to me, so it's not looking good on that front. We've got plenty of other names on our list, but a lot of them are young lads.

"Scoring goals in reserve games, even with Premier League clubs, is one thing, but stepping up to the mark and doing it in League Two is another matter. I have to make sure I bring in the right player through a process of due dilligence, rather than take a gamble on someone."

The Brewers have not scored in the League since bagging two late consolation goals in their 5-2 defeat at Chesterfield three games ago.

Dennehy's U21 Euro Hopes Ended

Any last hint that the Irish u21 side would qualify for the European Championships were dashed last night.

They lost 4-1 to bottom side Armenia, with Darren Dennehy playing the whole match. They have now sunk to the bottom of the group, without a win in six matches. The Irish u21's next meet up in Euro qualifier action on March 2nd.

FUNBUS – going by train.

By Train – departure from Hereford at 07.40, 08.40, 09.36 and 10.40 arriving in Burton at 10.20, 11.18, 12.20 and 13.18. Each journey involves a change at Birmingham New Street. The return trains depart Burton at 17.48 and 19.48 arriving in Hereford at 20.59 and 22.34 (change at B’ham NS). Please note, the Pirelli is a good 25-inute walk from Burton Station so a bus or a taxi may be the order of the day

By car – travel to Worcester joining the M5 north at J7. At J4A, join the M42. Leave the M42 at J11 and at the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A444 (sign Burton). Stay on the A444 all the way into Burton. At the roundabout near St Peters Bridge, turn right onto Stapenhill Road then left at the lights onto The Trent Bridge. Stay in the right lane and through both sets of lights onto Horninglow Street. Go straight through the first lights by the Magistrates Court and then right at the lights underneath the Brewery Flyover into Hawkins Lane. Follow the road through the Industrial Estate and over the Railway Bridge into Princess Way. The ground is 300 yards on your right. Distance is around 95 miles and you should allow 2 hours. Postcode is DE13 0AR.

Alehouses – Near the ground (over the bridge and off Wetmore Road) s The Great Northern where you will find the excellent Burton Bridge Bitter and at least one other handpump. There was a good gathering of Bulls fans in here on our last visit. The Beech Inn is a ten-minute walk up the Derby Road away from the town. In the centre, the local ‘Spoons is The Lord Burton at 154 High Street. The Roebuck and the well-recommended Devonshire Arms can be found by turning right out of the Station into Station Street. The “Dev” keeps most of the Burton Bridge range along with several guests and a varied menu. As you walk down Derby Road towards the ground, there are suitable watering holes along the way. The visitors end includes a bar.

Chip Shop – Angelos at 13/14 Wellington Street looks a decent bet before the walk down Derby Road although, I have a recollection that there is one just over half way to the ground.
