News Round Up

The Shropshire Star have named their teams of the decade for both Telford and Shrewsbury. Ex-Bulls Chris Mackenzie and Craig Stanley are in the Telford XI, while they make the strange choice of Gary Peters as the Shrews' best manager of the decade. Lincoln have released winger Khano Smith after his short term deal expired, and will not extend the loan of Southampton winger Anthony Pulis.

Rotherham hope to complete a deal to secure a site for their new stadium within the next two weeks. They have to return to the area as part of their deal to retain their Football League place. Notts County owner Peter Trembling will sell up if it's in the best interests of the club, saying that a serious investor will be welcome to take the club off his hands. Talks are ongoing with a number of parties, with a sponsorship deal beginning next season tied up with Norwegian company Ludo.

Aldershot have extended the loan of Reading midfielder Oliver Bozanic for another month. Burton may sign loan striker Steve Kabba on a permanent deal after Brentford said the player had 'found his level', but they would require a fee. Salisbury have had their transfer embargo lifted, a day after they agreed a CVA with creditors. They should exit Administration within a month once the statutory period to object to the CVA has passed.

Stockport have accepted a bid from Norwich for striker Oli Johnson. The 22 year old has only scored once this season after being linked to Fulham in the summer. He is one of four players linked with moves away in the January window. Norwich have reported a loss of £5million in being relegated from the Championship last season. Their accounts report that, while they have enough money and finance to complete this season, they will need nearly £3million in additional finance to continue at the same cost levels next term.

Aldershot are giving a trial to Swansea midfielder Kristian O'Leary. The 32 year old has not played for the Swans for more than a year and is out of contract in the summer. Cheltenham have lost the services of Blackpool loanee Ashley Eastham after the Tangerines recalled him. Dagenham are hoping to gazump Notts County in their efforts to sign Portsmouth winger Matt Ritchie on loan. Ritchie had a loan with the Daggers last season, but the club have signed Ritchie's teammate Marlon Pack on a months loan after the player had a similar spell at Wycombe.

Darlington have signed three new players. Clarke Keltie returns to the club after being released by Rochdale, while Irish pair Tadhg Purcell and Gary Dempsey have also agreed terms. Striker or winger Purcell scored 28 times in 104 appearances for Shamrock while midfielder Dempsey, a former Everton trainee, had a two year spell with Aberdeen before a brief stint with Yeovil.

Cheltenham Match Postponed

Cheltenham Town have confirmed that Saturday's League Two game against Hereford United has been postponed after a pitch inspection this morning.

A referee appointed by the Football League looked at the ground earlier this morning.

Swansea Striker linked with Bulls

As ever in a transfer period lots of players are linked with lots of clubs. And as ever in a transfer period probably only one in ten links ever becomes reality.

However here goes.

Swansea City striker Chad Bond has been linked with a move to Hereford United.

22 year old Bond, who had a spell on loan with Swedish outfit Ostersunds, was in the Swansea reserve side that played Hereford last month.

He scored one of the Swansea goals in their 3-1 victory.

Bond has also been linked with Yeovil.

News Round Up

Notts County owner Peter Trembling says the club needs a £25million investment to keep Sven Goran Eriksson at the club. That is the figure he believes is required to get the club into the Championship and keep Sven interested. He also thinks that a minimum £3million investment is needed to keep the current wage bill, with the BBC claiming that the club are currently £1.5million in debt.

Bournemouth claim that Notts County have turned down the chance to televise their re-arranged match after the original televised game was postponed. The Cherries are hoping the Magpies change their minds. Crewe have completed the loan signing of goalkeeper Steve Phillips until the end of the season. Phillips, 31, is a free agent in the summer.

Darlington have ended the loans of five players. One of them, Crystal Palace forward Simon Thomas, has now been released by his club. Dagenham have extended the loan of Peterboro defender Jamie Day for a second month.

Electronic Archive for Talking Bull

An 'electronic archive' is currently under construction for Talking Bull, the Hereford United fanzine.

The popular fanzine published its 100th edition in paper form in 2008. However, at the time, the editors said that they were finding it very difficult to put a fanzine together because of lack of material and no more editions have been published.

To put all 100 editions on the web is quite a task and it isn't yet known when the TB site will go live.

No Hope for Cheltenham Game

Saturday's League Two match between Cheltenham Town and Hereford United will be called off but probably not until Friday.

This morning there are five inches of snow covering the Whaddon Road pitch. And despite claims that covers might be used, the ground was already frozen before last night's snow.

Football League regulations normally do not allow pitch inspections until the day before the game but Cheltenham say they are 'awaiting further advice' from the Football League Headquarters.

Meanwhile Racing at Hereford scheduled for Sunday has already been cancelled. Officials say that there are four inches of snow on the course.

Valentine Safe - For Time Being

The FA have changed the cut off date for suspension from five yellow cards.

In the past any player amassing five cards before the end of February had to serve a one month suspension. For this season, however, the FA have brought the date forward to December 31st.

The news will be welcomed by Hereford United's Ryan Valentine who is currently on four yellow cards.

The new rule is that any player who reaches ten yellow cards before April 11th will miss a game.

Next Six Hereford Fixtures

With Saturday's Cheltenham expected to be postponed, here's a revised list of the next six Hereford United fixtures.

Sat Jan 16th: Morecambe Home 3pm
Tues Jan 19th: Crewe Home 7.45pm
Sat Jan 23rd: Bury Away 3pm
Sat Jan 30th: Port Vale Away 3pm
Tues Feb 2nd: Lincoln Home 7.45pm
Sat Feb 6th: Torquay Home 3pm.

Taylor to Referee on Saturday

Anthony Taylor from Manchester has been appointed to referee next Saturday's League Two match at Whaddon Road between Cheltenham Town and Hereford United, always assuming it goes ahead.

The last time the Bulls met Taylor was at Edgar Street in February 2009.

The visitors that day were Leyton Orient and the Bulls won the game 2-1 with a goal from Febian Brandy and a penalty goal from Steve Guinan after Brandy was up-ended.

However Taylor booked three Hereford players - Kris Taylor, Peter Gulasci and Sam Hewson.

To date this season Taylor has officiated 20 games and has given out 40 yellow and 3 red cards.

Tyler Weir contract extended?

Former HUFC youth player Tyler Weir signed his first professional contract back in June ’09 for an initial period of 6 months.

Bulls News understands that this has now been extended until the end of the current season. A local player who originates from Ledbury, Weir made his first start for The Bulls in the December Johnstone Paint Trophy match against MK Dongs.

News Round Up

Notts County have been handed a transfer embargo by the Football League after being hit with a second winding up order from the taxman. After they averted one order in December, the second comes for a further £500,000 in unpaid tax. Owner Peter Trembling says they intend to have funds in place to clear all debts by the 15th, with the court date set for the 27th. Mansfield boss David Holdsworth has denied he is in the frame for the Notts County job.

Rochdale are reported to have turned down a £300,000 bid from Scunthorpe for defender Craig Dawson, barely six months after they signed the player from non-league Radcliffe Boro for a nominal fee. Ex-Bull Stephen O'Leary has signed a further one month deal at Bradford in an effort to prove his fitness to the club.

Lincoln have denied reports that up to four of their young players are set to join Fulham, after press reports suggested the Premier League side had offered £200,000 for keeper Rob Burch while defenders Moses Swaibu and Cian Hughton, plus forward Nathan Adams were also linked to moves. York's preparations for their FA Cup match at Stoke at the weekend are to be investigated by the FA after they were stuck in traffic until five minutes after the scheduled kick off. The club opted not to spend £2,000 on an overnight stay despite earning £150,000 from their cup run.

Cheltenham are expected to sign Peterboro defender Daniel Andrew on loan. He has been at Kidderminster under similar terms. Chester's new management may not be happening after all. Chief Executive Bob Gray has denied resigning, while the local press reports that Morrell Maison failed to turn up at the club yesterday after a dispute over expenses. Unconfirmed reports also say the players have been told to stay at home and look for other clubs with Maison running a football academy that will provide a team to play.

Northampton have signed Irish striker Stephen O'Flynn from Limerick until the end of the season. He scored 14 times in 13 games for Limerick in the last Irish season. The Cobblers have also taken central defender Luke Wilkinson on a month's loan from Portsmouth.

Feb 2nd for Lincoln Game

Hereford United have announced that the home game against Lincoln City, which was due to be held on December 18th, will now be played on Tuesday February 2nd with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Subject to pitch conditions, The Bulls make their shortest trip of the season on Saturday to take on The Robins of Cheltenham. It’s maybe fortunate that the recent cold snap didn’t arrive a few weeks ago otherwise those on leave would have found their gardening tasks slightly more difficult. We’ll just have to hope that their newly appointed former carpet maintainer has had some influence on playing surface.

Cheltenham are, of course, relative newcomers to proper football as they entered the big boys League some 27 years after The Bulls led the way. Whaddle Road has a capacity of around 7000 with roughly 50% seated. For this visit, Bulls fans are to be located in part of the Carlsberg Stand, which is all seated. PLEASE NOTE – The Carlsberg Stand is RESERVED SEATING, which suggests that you will need to sit in your allocated seat. Fans who visited last season will recall the chaos that followed the lack of proper stewarding and you are therefore advised to arrive in good time to find your seats.

The game is all ticket with no sales on the day. Tickets should be purchased from HUFC offices. Adults £20, Concessions £14 (over 65 and students with NUS card), U17’s £7.

Coaches
HUISA – departs Radford’s at 12.30 with a fare of £11 (£10 for members). Seats can be booked through the Club offices during normal hours (08422 761939)
FUNBUS – departs Wetherspoons at 11.30. Expected fare £9. Contact Chesh.

CAR – My suggested route is perhaps not the shortest but should provide a fairly trouble free journey. From Hereford, drive to Ledbury then follow the ring road to the end to join the A417 to the M50. Join the M50 easterly (sign M5) and continue to the M5 where you take the southbound carriageway (sign The South West, Tewkesbury, Bristol). Leave the M5 at J9 (sign Evesham) joining the A46. At the third set of lights (approx 2 miles) turn right for Cheltenham and right again at the junction onto the A435. After passing through Bishops Cleeve, you will enter Cheltenham with the Racecourse on your left. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto Evesham Road and then turn left at the lights into Wellington Road. Take the second exit at the next roundabout into Prestbury Road then first right into Whaddon Road. This route avoids driving through the centre of Cheltenham. Parking close to the ground is not easy and you may do well to park at the Racecourse and take the Park and Ride shuttle to the ground. Distance is about 45 miles and you should allow an hour. Postcode GL52 5NA.

ALEHOUSES – Depends what you’re looking for…Tailors in Cambray Place is a large Pub with big screens, Wadsworths on hand pump and fit barmaids although it’s not the cheapest. Close to The Racecourse on Harp Hill, you’ll find The Hewlett Arms serving Black Sheep, Stanway and Tetleys along with good food. The Sudeley Arms is on Prestbury Road and offers a decent range of ales, ciders and a perry. The local ‘Spoons is The Moon Under Water on Bath Road. Finally, The Kemble Brewery Inn, if you can find it, is a little gem in Fairview Street. It’s a small single room Pub but has a reputation for fine ales with often up to six on hand pump. Otherwise, there is a decent choice in the town centre. The nearest chip shop appears to be Pittville Fish and Chip Bar at 27 Prestbury Road.

Enjoy.

19th Jan For Crewe Game

Crewe's official site reports that their trip to Edgar Street, postponed from Saturday, is to now take place later this month.

The game has been set for Tuesday 19th January, kicking off at 7.45pm. The game is three days after the Bulls face Morecambe at Edgar Street, and before they travel to Bury.

The postponed games at home to Lincoln and Aldershot are still to be arranged.

News Round Up

Crewe striker Anthony Elding has been linked with a move to Hungary. Ex-Derby man Craig Short is manager of Ferencvaros, owned by Sheff Utd owner Kevin McCabe, and is claimed to want the striker. Update: Crewe have released Elding, who cost the £170,000 18 months ago. Accrington have offered strikers Michael Symes and Bobby Grant new contracts in a bid to keep them. They have also extended the deals of Peter Murphy and Gary King until the end of the season, and extended the loan of Billy Kee from Leicester until the summer.

Cheltenham have extended the loan of Bristol Rovers midfielder David Pipe for a second month. Port Vale have extended the loan of striker Lewis Haldane until the end of the season after the player failed to negotiate a permanent Bristol Rovers departure. Ex-Bull Mark Beesley is wanted on loan by Histon from local rivals Cambridge Utd.

Lincoln have extended the loan of striker Delroy Facey for another month, midfielder Nathan Baker for a third month, but ended loan deals for defenders Eric Lihaj and Joe Heath. They have also extended the loan of midfielder Chris Herd until the end of the season. Shrewsbury have agreed the mutual termination of goalkeeper Glyn Garner's contract. The 33 year old has been out injured for more than a year.

Northampton have told defender Pat Kanyuka his contract will not be renewed when it expired at the end of January.

Blanchett Declines Hereford Offer

Danny Blanchett has turned down the chance to stay at Hereford United.

It is understood John Trewick had offered the youngster an eighteen month deal at Edgar Street, which Peterborough were happy with, but Blanchett declined.

The young defender is expected to move to Wimbledon on loan.

Meanwhile former Hereford United striker Tim Sills is open to offers. He has not featured for Torquay recently and it appears manager Paul Buckle is happy for him to move on.

Buckle has confirmed he is interested in Peterborough's midfielder Dean Keates.

Three Loanees leave Edgar Street

Three loan players have returned to their parent clubs from Edgar Street.

Jonny Godsmark, Nathaniel Wedderburn and Jordon Mutch have come to the end of their loan periods with Hereford United and have returned to Newcastle, Stoke and Birmingham respectively.

Godsmark made 12 appearances during his injury-hit stay, Wedderburn made three appearances while Mutch made four appearances.

Meanwhile Hereford United say that the Cheltenham tickets for next Saturday will be available to purchase by telephone on 08442 760 1939 until Wednesday 4pm.

At present it seems unlikely that the game will take place with cold weather forecast for the week.

Crewe WAG to Enter Big Brother

Nicola Tappenden is said to be one of the housemates in the new Big Brother series which starts tonight on Channel Four.

In her spare time she is understood to be the WAG of Crewe's Simon Walton.

She dated ex-West Ham and Fulham ace Bobby Zamora before spliting in 2007 and is now engaged to midfielder Walton.

Walton and Tappenden have one child together, Poppy, who was born in November 2008.

Walton should have played for Crewe against Hereford United yesterday had the match gone ahead. Perhaps Tappenden might have been watching in the stands.

There again perhaps not.

News Round Up

Grimsby have signed winger Paris Cowan-Hall on a months loan from Portsmouth. He made a brief sub appearance for them this afternoon. Accrington striker Michael Symes is claimed to be a target of Derby by Sky Sports. Barnet midfielder Nicky Deverdics has had an ankle put in plaster as a precaution after damaging it in training.

Torquay face an investigation after four Brighton players reported racial abuse from the crowd after their FA Cup match at Plainmoor today. Shrewsbury have extended the loan of keeper David Button from Spurs for another month. Chester striker Gregg Blundell has become the first departure from their already thin squad after signing a permanent deal with Barrow.

Rochdale are hoping to conclude a deal to offload striker Jon Shaw permanently to Gateshead in the hope they can use the money to keep in-form loan man Chris O'Grady. Bury are in advanced talks to sign loanee David Worrall on a permanent deal from West Brom. The former Shakers trainee cost the Baggies £50,000 two years ago but has only made one sub appearance for their first team.

Ex-Bull Watch

John Snape will find out on Monday quite how difficult his job as manager of Bromsgrove has become. The Southern League Division One Midlands side are already in the bottom three after being docked ten points for going into Administration but could be docked another 20 or be thrown out of the league pending the outcome of Monday's creditors meeting. The club owe more than £500,000 and have already seen two meetings postponed.

Former team-mate Matt Clarke is enjoying his first stint as a manager. His Southern League Premier Halesowen Town are in the play-off hunt after also being deducted ten points for going into Administration on the back of Morrell Maison's disasterous ownership of the club. They are twelve games unbeaten in the league, and would be second in the table without the points deduction.

Results Round Up

Just four games survived the weather in League Two today. Northampton won 2-0 at Bournemouth to push the Cobblers up to 16th, while Cheltenham drew 1-1 at Bradford to close within a point of the Bulls but having played two games more. Shrewsbury won 1-0 at Chesterfield to return to the play-off spots, though their rivals have up to three games in hand, and Grimsby drew 1-1 with Bury to cut their gap to safety to four points having played two more games than Lincoln.

In the Conference yesterday Stevenage took the lead at the top of the table with a 4-1 win over Cambridge, with Oxford a point behind with three games in hand.

New Year 1998 - Difficult Times at Hereford

It's the FA Cup this weekend and whilst Hereford United are not involved in this round, it's an ideal time to turn back the pages to New Year 1998. Life was very difficult at Edgar Street then as this article from the Times explained.

Graham Turner's secretary, Joan, was in her office trying to cope with the phone calls. The new year programme was placing extra demands on those staff remaining at Hereford United after the redundancies that followed the club's loss of Nationwide League status last May. As usual, when Hereford are on an FA Cup run, people wanted to know where Ronnie Radford was.

"I have been here 18 years and I am sick of it," Joan said. Of that goal. "Neil Grayson has got to score one to kill that Ronnie Radford goal so we never hear that name again." She has worked under ten managers at Hereford, but the name that keeps coming up is Ronnie Radford.

Even Turner, the Hereford director of football, admits to being fed up with it, though one imagines that, if the Vauxhall Conference club's directors shared that view, they would have taken down the photograph in the boardroom by now. It is still there on the wall in black and white: "Goal of the Century", the caption reads, though Radford is not in shot. The boot that launched the cannonball is 30 yards away from the Newcastle United goalkeeper in the picture.

Goal of the century? As far as Hereford's history is concerned, it remains so, but there are 24 months to go. However, for Grayson, the club's leading scorer, to have a chance of granting Joan her wish, Hereford will need to beat Tranmere Rovers in the third round on Sunday. It is no good scoring a fabulous goal to eliminate a first division club. You cannot score the goal of the century against Tranmere. It has to put out a big club, like Newcastle United.

Newcastle, from the old first division, were beaten 2-1 by non-league Hereford at Edgar Street in 1972. Radford scored the equaliser, Ricky George the winner. At the end of that season, Hereford entered the Football League, but, in 25 years before dropping out again, their spoon hardly made a sound against the trophy. Now they are a non-league club again, they are up to old tricks.

After six seasons in which they eliminated only one league club and became one of non-league football's favourite dishes, going out to Yeovil Town, Bath City and Hitchin Town, Hereford have rolled over two league opponents this season. In the first round they put out Brighton, who had consigned them to the Conference. In the second round, they defeated Colchester United.

"I suppose, as a non-league club, there is less pressure," Turner said. "As a league side, you are on a banana skin." Sittingbourne, from the Dr Martens League, threw one under Hereford in the fourth qualifying round and they almost fell. Hereford trailed 2-1 towards the end. "I looked at the sky and asked: 'Why me?' " Turner said. "I could not believe it could happen so soon after Brighton." But the equaliser came and now the fourth round is beckoning. They have never been beyond that stage.

The only bull Turner talks is Freetown Kudos, the club mascot, a one-ton Herefordshire beast occasionally paraded before matches. Not this Sunday, though. "Haven't had time to think about it," Joan said. There is refreshing straight talking in Turner's replies to key questions. Formerly the manager of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, is he content at Hereford? Certainly not. Ambition still burns.

"There might be an opportunity to manage somewhere bigger than Hereford," Turner - "a young 50" - said. "People knew that when I came but, if the opportunity comes up, it must mean I have done something here." Next question. Which is more important, beating Kidderminster Harriers in the Conference yesterday or Tranmere? "It's got to be Tranmere," he replied. No platitudes about the league being the bread and butter.

His reasons are "financial". A glamour tie would earn Hereford some £200,000. "That would ease our financial problems," Turner said. He did not want to draw Tranmere - estimated profit on Sunday, £10,000 - and does not mind admitting it. "Disappointing," he said.

Two months ago, Hereford were unable to pay the players on schedule and, though that crisis has passed, a Cup windfall would enable Turner to keep them on full-time next season. He has taken a voluntary 30 per cent cut in salary and helps out wherever he can. "We do not have a commercial manager and I take any opportunity to sell a board on the ground or an advert in the programme," he said.

Hereford are in voluntary administration, nearly £1 million in debt. "That means we have to keep control of our own affairs and there is no administrator coming in, wielding an axe," Turner said. "We have a meeting of creditors this month to sort out a deal to ease the situation and stop the potential winding-up of the club."
One thing that Turner will not admit is that the chance of an immediate return to the third division has gone. "You never give up hope," he said, perhaps recalling that Brighton were 12 points adrift at the foot of the league in December last season.

After their 4-1 win away to Kidderminster yesterday, Hereford are 19 points behind Halifax, the Conference leaders. If John Aldridge, the watching Tranmere manager, left uneasy at the quality of Hereford's play, he may be comforted to know that Richard Leadbeater will not be available on Sunday. Leadbeater played a part in all four Hereford goals, scoring three and making the other, but, as a loan signing, he is prohibited from playing in the Cup.

Going out of the league was Turner's most traumatic football experience. "I had never seen so many grown men cry: in the boardroom, on the terraces, in the dressing-room," he said. If bulls could cry, Freetown Kudos would no doubt have been standing in a puddle. At Wolves, Turner left when abuse from fans became intolerable. At Hereford, supporters voted to raise admission prices this season in a survival gesture.

Relegation inspired a book on the club Hereford United: The League Era . Ron Parrott, the author, suggests that David Icke, the broadcaster turned Green Party eccentric, is "arguably Hereford's best-known former player", a goalkeeper in their first league season. Try telling that to Joan.

Hereford Game Called Off

This afternoon's League Two game at Hereford has been called off because of a frozen pitch.

It's the third home game in a row that has fallen to the weather.

Next Saturday the Bulls are away at Cheltenham.

The match is currently all-ticket for Hereford United supporters but with the last three home games postponed there has been little incentive for supporters not living close to Hereford to purchase tickets for the Cheltenham match.

The club will send tickets out in the post but it may be prudent to contact the office as soon as possible next week to ensure tickets reach supporters in good time.

Planning Applications Take Time in Hereford

Please note - This article has been updated since its original publication.

With a planning application for the redevelopment of the Blackfriars Stand at the Edgar Street football ground likely to be submitted to Herefordshire Council sometime in the not too distant future, it's interesting to note just how long applications take to be approved.

Last July an application was made to Herefordshire Council by Mrs Joan Fennessy on behalf of Hereford United Football Club. The proposal was to 'Replace existing non illuminated signage board'.

It appears the application was made on July 15th and was subject to a 'public consultation period' from September 10th to October 1st.

Neighbour Notifications were sent out to 41 different addresses.

Consultation notices were sent out to the Highways Agency, Hereford Council at two different addresses and the Transportation Unit- Central.

That was all done in September.

According to the UKPlanning website the application was passed on November 2nd. However as at January 1st, according to the Herefordshire Council Website, the application 'has not yet been decided'. It does not say why.

As it's taken over four months for an application about a signage board to be passed, it seems unlikely that the application for the redevelopment of the Blackfriars End of Edgar Street will be dealt with much quicker.

Bad Weather Disrupts Training at Hereford

Hereford United manager John Trewick has admitted that he would like to the weather to improve as soon as possible. Training has been disrupted and the Bulls face the possibility of having three home games called off in a row.

"The training schedule has been disrupted," Trewick told the Worcester News.

"Matches have been called off and it’s never ideal when that happens so we are just looking to get back to some kind of normality against Crewe. The forecast isn’t great but we have just got to get on with it.

"We had a period of over a week when we couldn’t get on the grass at all and we had to go indoors to a gym and on some astroturf.

"There were also a couple of days when there was nothing available at all because of the holiday period and we had to do sessions in the gym at Edgar Street and around the pitch."

Meanwhile Dario Gradi, the Crewe director of football, appears well aware of the threat Kenny Lunt could be tomorrow.

"I hate facing our former players, especially when we are up against someone as bright and intelligent in his play as Kenny Lunt," Gradi told the Crewe OS.

"I would imagine he has been planning our downfall for a few days now and it will be nice to see him again. He has always been a favourite player of mine, ever since I first worked with him as a 9 year-old.

"I regard Kenny as a friend and I have the highest regard for him as a footballer as well."

News Round Up

Crewe have axed keeper Steve Collis, and appear to have agreed a loan extension to the end of the season for Bristol Rovers stopper Steve Phillips. Burton have released defender Aaron Brown, now surplus after ex-Bull Richard Jackson's arrival, and striker Serge Makofo. Aldershot have allowed club captain Adam Hinshelwood to join Wycombe on a free transfer.

A number of games have called pitch inspections for tomorrow, but the Darlington-Port Vale match is already off. Chester are gearing up for a takeover with both former chairman Ian Anderson and Chief Executive Bob Gray quitting the club. The debatable Morrell Maison is now in day-to-day control of the club, and may make a takeover bid, much to the dismay of fans group CFU.

Football's economic problems have gained it's first major casualty with Excelsior Mouscron being thrown out of the Belgian First Division due to financial problems. They had been a top flight side for 13 years, twice qualifying for the UEFA Cup. The club, who have a flourishing youth academy, have made 120 staff and players redundant but hope to save the academy and reform in the Third Division.

Crewe Supporters can Pay on the Day

Not for the first time the original decision to make a game all ticket for away fans has been changed.

Crewe Alexandra supporters will be able to pay on the day after, it is assumed, they hadn't sold that many tickets for tomorrow's game at Hereford United.

It may be that the prospect of the game being postponed, because of frosty conditions, and therefore moved to a Tuesday evening later in the season had put some Crewe fans off buying advance tickets.

Interestingly this lunchtime Crewe are still reporting that juniors aged 11 to 15 can purchase a seated ticket for just £9. Hereford United juniors will have to folk out £12 for a similar seat.

10am Pitch Inspection at Edgar Street

Hereford United have confirmed that there will be a 10am pitch inspection tomorrow morning to see whether there is any chance of the game against Crewe Alexandra going ahead.

Football's Giantkillers - 50 Great Cup Upsets

A new book, Football's Giantkillers written by Derek Watts, is being published later this month. The book looks at 50 great cup upsets and, perhaps inevitably, contains a chapter on perhaps the most famous of them, Hereford United defeating Newcastle United in 1972.

Watts grow up supporting Hastings United and his introduction to giantkilling came back in December 1953 when Swindon Town were the visitors to the Pilot Field. He had been going to games with his dad and older brother and had grown to love the 'atmosphere, banter and jargon'.

In front of 9,917 Hastings won the game 4-1. Of course a win wasn't expected and the media was full of praise for the Sussex club.

"All honour to Hastings for producing a soccer showpiece," said the People and the Times awarded Hastings 'the honour for the best win of the round'.

So started Watts' addiction to a drug, for which as he says there is - fortunately - no cure.

There are the details of 49 other giantkillings in the book. But it is not the actual game which is the highlight of the book for me, it is the information and history about the clubs and some of individuals involved.

Of course Hereford United supporters will know all about the Newcastle game but other readers might not remember that the great John Charles had been instrumental in putting the squad together. He was present at the game and also at the following round tie against West Ham.

As players Ronnie Radford and Billy Meadows arrived at Edgar Street 'there was Charlo, camelhair coat, steely grey hair, permanent suntan and wearing that broad grin. He was resting against the bonnet of his car and showed us an envelope.

It read "Mr John Charles, two tickets, £2 to pay."'

Both Radford and Meadows stared at him in disbelief as, in a demonstration of the humility of the truly great, Charles said, 'I wouldn't mind, but I've only got 30 bob on me.'

Many of Hereford United's near neighbour giantkillings are included in the book. Even Shrewsbury Town gets a chapter for their 2003 win over Everton.

But it is storys like the antics of Wrexham's Mickey Thomas that help make the book so enjoyable.

Wrexham beat Arsenal 2-1 in the FA Cup back in 1992. Thomas was back at the Racecourse after 20 years at playing at clubs such as Manchester United, Everton and West Brom.

Thomas, then aged 37, had a philosophy - forget about tomorrow and concentrate on enjoying today. However his plans to make money on the side landed him in prison. He started 'flogging bent tenners to trainage trainees' but the Judge didn't take kindly to the scam and sent him down for 18 months.

"Playing football with a team of lifers was an experience", said Thomas later. "Every time the ball went over the fence they all wanted to go and get it back.

"Wayne Rooney's on a hundred grand a week. Mind you, so was I until police found my printing machine."

Back to the game and Thomas wanted revenge on Arsenal as he had been on the losing side in the FA Cup final of 1979 when the Gunners defeated Manchester United 3-2.

Arsenal went one up and it wasn't until late in the second half that Wrexham's 'Dads Army' replied. A free kick had been awared to the home team which Arsenal boss George Graham described as 'mysterious'.

Thomas, who according to Graham had 'frolicked through the game like some up-and-coming youngster' unleased a drive that flew straight past David Seaman.

Two minutes later Steve Watkin, who had a spell at Hereford, scored the winner.

Wrexham forced a replay at West Ham in the next round. The Hammers supporters knew all about Thomas and we seen to be waving £20 notes at him.

"We all make mistakes," said Thomas afterwards."Mine was making my £20 notes an inch too long!"

Football's Giantkillers is written by Derek Watts and published by Book Guide Publishing. It is due to go on sale later this month.

30 Years at Hereford United

Joan Fennessy has been working at Hereford United for 30 years. Now Vice Chairman of the club as well as company secretary, she started in the office back in 1980.

In those days Frank Lord was the manager.

The other managers she has worked alondside are Tommy Hughes, John Newman, Ian Bowyer, Colin Addison, John Sillett, Greg Downs, John Layton, Graham Turner and currently John Trewick.

Perhaps surprisingly she has only worked with two different chairmen at the club. When she started Peter Hill was in charge and current chairman Graham Turner took over from him.

Along with Turner she purchased shares in the club in June 1998. At this time she became a director of the club and was appointed company secretary two months later.

To have worked at Edgar Street for 30 years is probably a record and some achievement considering the nature of football and the difficult times the club has been through.
