Mills looks towards his pension

Lee Mills is expected to quit football.

The former Hereford United striker has told the Hereford Times of his plans.

"I don't think I'll be playing again. I get my pension this year and I think I'll probably retire.

"I was thinking of calling it a day last season. But Hereford at the time were playing good football and I thought I would give it another year.

"There are probably half-a dozen players at Hereford who should be in the Football League because they have good attitudes and ability. Some are young and too good for the Conference," he said.

Coldicott still expected to sign for Bulls

It is now over four weeks since Stacy Coldicott was linked with a possible move to Hereford United.

The ex-Grimsby player has trained with the Bulls squad but, at the time of writing, there is still no news of a deal which would bring him to Edgar Street.

Usually after such a long period of speculation either the player is deemed not suitable by Graham Turner, they can't agree terms, or the player has had a better offer from elsewhere. However Coldicott is still at Edgar Street so the betting is he will sign whatever the delay.

With the first pre-season friendly taking place on Saturday it looks as though Hereford will only have some 15 players signed on and two of those are recovering from injury. That is unless an announcement about new players, including Coldicott, is made today or tomorrow.

In any case the implication is that there are likely to be several trialists lining up in Hereford kit on Saturday.

This morning's Hereford Times reports that Turner has had talks with a former League striker and has also had a number of trialists taking part in training. But there are no quotes from the Hereford United manager.

Meanwhile Cod Almighty published an player profile article about Coldicott at the beginning of last season. Although a little tongue in cheek it gives an insight about the player.

Stacy Coldicott is like my mashed potato. A little lumpen, but he does the job. Out for most of last season with a knackered body, the estranged husband of an ex-Big Brother contestant is now one of the few players at Blundell Park who has been there more than five minutes, signing for Alan Buckley way back in the LAST CENTURY!

Stace may well be crucial this season. Slade has hinted that he thinks certain players have become too comfy at Blundell Park, and this might include Coldicott, but it was no accident that, when he did play, Town performed better. Indeed, we may not have been in the shite we were in if Coldicott's innards weren't made of jelly.

It's good to see that Stacy has finally shaken off the scapegoat tag; possibly because he's a hell of a lot better than all the other dross that've turned out for Town over the last 18 months, and his experience and cucumber-cool head may well be needed when mixing with the lowest league toughs this season.

One hopes, now that his long term lover Alan Pouton, has gone, that Stace will get forward a bit more. He's still a relative nipper, as far as footy goes, so her can't blame he dodgy knees, now can he? However, as the last two seasons have shown us, he may well be needed just as much in front of the back four. Or three. Or however many we're playing back there this year.

Personally, I'd like to see him grow back his hair so that he doesn't look like the mad little bouncer that stands out the Ritz in Nottingham growling at men in pastel coloured shirts and school trousers. But I'll settle for him having a blinder of a season, I guess.

Meanwhile the club has said that it will cost £7 to watch a pre-season friendly at Edgar Street. Concessions will pay £4.

City short of players for Saturday

Bristol City are struggling to bring a strong side to Edgar Street on Saturday for their friendly against Hereford United. Manager Brian Tinnion may be forced to bring some acadamy players into the side to make up numbers.

Bristol also have a friendly against Clevedon Town on Saturday.

According to the Bristol City Official Website five first teamers have been hit by injury or illness in the lead up to Saturday's games at Hereford United and Clevedon Town.

Bradley Orr and Alex Russell are both struggling with hamstring problems, the former being the more serious concern. Clayton Fortune has strained a thigh muscle, Jamie Smith's ankle is still "not quite right" and trialist David Burborough has been hit by a virus.

Leroy Lita is also unlikely to be available as talks over his proposed transfer to Championship club Reading continue.

So from the 21 players handed squad numbers on Monday, Tinnion looks certain to have just 16 available to select from.

Hereford United will be without both Jamie Pitman and Simon Travis as they recover from their injuries.

New league for youth team

Hereford United's youth team will play in a different region following the restructuring of the Football League Youth Alliance for 2005-06.

The end of season merit division has been discontinued and there will be a new League Cup competition.

The young Bulls will compete in the South West Conference which has been expanded by three clubs and comprises :

A.F.C. Bournemouth
Bristol Rovers
Cheltenham Town
Cirencester (new)
Exeter City
Hereford United (new)
Newport County
Oxford United (new)
Plymouth Argyle
Swansea City
Swindon Town
Yeovil Town

Each will play the others home and away, giving twenty-two fixtures.

Scott given chance with Sadlers

Last seasons back-up goalkeeper, Ben Scott, has been given a trial at League One outfit Walsall. The twenty one year old begins a short trial under Player-Manager Paul Merson in which he will be aiming to impress enough to secure a contract, although he will not be first choice at The Bescott Stadium.

The twenty one year old, signed by Graham Turner from Sheffield United, made just one senior appearance for United last season but captained the reserve side as they won the league.

Merson said, speaking to the Express and Star, "We will take a look at him and another lad who may be coming in. But we know we desperately need a third keeper - it would be too much of a gamble to start with just Andy (Oakes) and Dean (Coleman)."

Beckwith signing confirmed

It is now confirmed by Hereford United that former Gillingham defender Dean Beckwith has sealed a one-year contract with the Bulls.

21-year-old Beckwith has experience in the Conference having spent a loan period with Dagenham & Redbridge, and featured in the 1-1 draw at Edgar Street in October 2003.

Beckwith was born in Southwark on September 18th 1983 and is said to weigh over 13st.

He was released by Gillingham last month having come through the youth system at Priestfield, and spent a spell on loan at Margate last season.

Wayne Jones, the Hereford United physio, used to be at Gillingham and would know all about 6ft 3in Beckwith.

Wallace to help with Conference

The Conference board of directors have appointed Stevenage chairman, Phil Wallace, as a joint vice-chairman of the Conference.

Interestingly this appointment comes after threats by Wallace to the Non-League Paper, reported yesterday, over the level of wages paid at Stevenage.

Two years ago the Conference stressed that clubs should live within their means and introduced a rule that wages should not exceed around 65% of turnover.

But what turnover included was never made clear.

Also appointed was as a vice-chairman was Southport chairman Charlie Clapham. Bill King remains as chairman.

It's all Scott's fault.

Craig Mawson has revealed that he is travelling on his own at present and could be more choosy who his travelling partner is next season.

The Hereford United goalkeeper told the NLP that he shared a room with fellow goalie Ben Scott after joining the Bulls last season.

"I travel on my own at the moment. My room-mate has just left.

"I roomed with Ben Scott for most of last season. I didn't get much sleep because he is so hyperactive"!

NLP apologies to Wallace

Today's Non-League Paper carries an apology to Stevenage Borough chairman, Phil Wallace, for any embarrassment caused in an article last week which reported on the wages being paid at the club.

In the piece the paper reported that two League Two managers had said they were unable to compete with the high level of wages being paid at a few top-level Conference clubs and went on to mention the possible pay packets of Stevenage players including Anthony Elding and Darryn Stamp.

During the last week the NLP contacted Bulls News about an article we published about the accounts at Stevenage in early May.

The article mentioned differences between the level of wages at Hereford and Stevenage and questioned the support that chairman Wallace could be giving to the club.

On the expenditure side, the wages paid at Stevenage are twice that at Hereford. Figures say that wages are £1,013,979 for the Hertfordshire club whereas only £543,780 was spent at Edgar Street. The Stevenage squad is currently five or six players bigger than Hereford's.

The apology from the NLP came after rumours of action against the paper from Wallace.

Gould makes 12,000 mile move

Former Hereford United goalkeeper Jonathan Gould is to restart his footballing career - in New Zealand.

Gould, who played for the Bulls on-loan from Preston North End at the start of last season, has moved to Hawkes Bay United.

The thirty-six year-old had a six-year spell at Celtic, and also featured for Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion and Bradford City.

He told the Mirror that returning to New zealand, where he started his footballing career, is a opportunity that he's relishing.

"I'm excited to be going back to New Zealand. It's a country that reminds me so much about Scotland, with the friendliness of the people.

"I was only 20 when I packed my bags for New Zealand but it worked out well because we won the national league in my first season there back in 1989, the first time a provincial side had done that.

"I was only there for a year but it was a very happy time and I always said to myself that if I was ever going to emigrate it would be to New Zealand."

Gould is taking a player/coach role with his new club.

The Back The Bulls Lottery

The Back The Bulls Lottery (BTBL) is going all out this coming season to increase the number of supporters taking part which in turn will increase the prize money and help Hereford United at the same time.

The Lottery used to be called the Save The Bulls Lottery but as the financial position at Edgar Street has improved the decision to change the name was taken.

BTBL is an official Hereford United project. It has been quite successful in making money for the club and currently takes around £400 a month from entries. However the potential is enormous and so a "push" to increase membership is to be launched shortly.

The lottery is sponsored by PDS Recruitment. They back the Lottery with
donations towards the costs of producing posters and leaflets and it is with their help that posters will be placed all around Edgar Street. Co-inciding with the poster campaign there will be do a mass leaflet hand-out at some of the opening games of the season. There will also be a stand at the pre-season open day.

In future all draws for the Lottery will be made on match days, either before the game or at half-time to increase fans awareness of the lottery. The aim is to increase the takings four-fold this season.

For anyone who might want to support the lottery but is unable to get to Edgar Street, the intention is that supporters will be able to sign up on the Official Website through on-line banking.

One of the problems facing those who run the lottery is how to have the draws on the pitch. Currently the winner is picked using a using a random number generator program on a PC which although very efficient would not be a very impressive spectacle on a football pitch at half-time! So they are looking for a new idea which is simple and looks impressive at the same time!

More details about the lottery can be found on the Official Hereford United Website.

Bulls News would like to thank Mark Farmer for his help in producing this article.

Triallists join club for training

Hereford United director of Football Graham Turner is looking at several players as the club started back pre-season training yesterday.

"One or two players will be reporting here for training, one or two more will be training at League clubs and a further one or two are considering our offers," he told the Hereford Times.

"The pre-season will involve plenty of ball work and some weights. And we will find some hills to run up."

Fixture switches for United

Hereford United have switched two of their fixtures as they begin pre-season training.

The Bulls' friendly against Wrexham has been moved to Wednesday 20th July because of the TNS vs Liverpool clash at the Racecourse the previous day.

Furthermore, as predicted by Bulls News last week, the Conference match against Altrincham on September 3rd will now kick-off at midday, to avoid a clash with the England vs Wales clash, reports the club's official website.

Six join club for pre-season

Both Dean Beckwith and Stacy Coldicott will start pre-season training with Hereford United today.

The two, who have been widely linked with the Bulls, join four triallists at the club as they prepare for the summer friendly campaign.

Club secretary Joan Fennessy told the Hereford Journal: "The two new players will join the rest of the squad as pre-season training begins.

"There will also be four traillists, all experienced players. So there could possibly be some more signings before the end of the week."

Meanwhile, the club's open day will be held on Sunday, August 7th, when the new yellow and green away kit will be unveiled for the first time.

United sign-up ex-Bull

Former Hereford United midfielder Chris Hargreaves has joined League Two side Oxford United.

Hargreaves, who was at Edgar Street when they were relegated from the Football League in 1997, has enjoyed spells at Plymouth Argyle and Northampton Town since then.

The thirty-three year-old has signed a two-year contract for Oxford, having only been offered a year-long deal by former club Brentford.

"I would have been happy for him to stay, but I must look to improve and Chris must look for security," boss Martin Allen told the Bees' website.

Meanwhile, further to our article last week on BEST (Bulls Exiles Supporters Troop), membership will be £15 annually, as membership to Hereford United FC is £10. All of those who have signed-up already will be contacted in due course.

Youth side in FA Cup draw

Hereford United's youth team will host Malmesbury Victoria in the first qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup.

The tie must be played week commencing Monday, 26th September, and will be settled on the night.

Only players that are under the age of eighteen on 31st August are eligible to play in the tournament.

If the Bulls progress, they will face a tie against the winners of the Paulton Rovers or Brislington tie.

In the third round, if Hereford get that far, they are again at home, against Bath City, Bishop's Cleeve, Cinderford Town or Bristol Manor Farm.

Bulls News continue sponsorship deal

Bulls News is pleased to announce that it is has agreed with Hereford United to sponsor Wayne Jones, the club's physiotherapist, for the upcoming season.

Wayne Jones joined the Bulls last March after a short spell out of football. Previously he was coach and then later assistant manager at Gillingham until May last year when his contract was not renewed.

It will be the fourth year in a row that an Independent Hereford United Website has sponsored a member of the Hereford United squad.

For the first two years HU-FC.co.uk supported Richard O'Kelly, but with O'Kelly moving to Bournemouth and HU-FC.co.uk closing down that arrangement came to an end in May 2004.

The Bulls News team then agreed with Hereford United to follow in HU-FC.co.uk's footsteps and sponsored John Trewick, the current Hereford United coach, last season.

Several time changes to fixtures expected

The Conference fixtures have only just been released and already there are suggestions that there are likely to be several fixtures when the start time, and possibly the date, could be changed.

Firstly on September 3rd Wales play England at the Millenium Stadium. Hereford are due to play new-comers to the Conference, Altrincham, on that day at Edgar Street. It is thought that this game could start at mid-day or possibly the previous evening.

Secondly on New Year's Eve Hereford United travel to Exeter City. The game is currently due to kick-off at 3pm and could well be brought forward to a 1pm start.

Thirdly Sky are to feature Conference Football again this coming season. Once again they are expected to show some games on a Monday evening. As all Conference sides are to be featured at least once this will mean a time and date change for at least one game featuring Hereford United.

One possible choice could be the away game at Stevenage which is due to be played on September 10th. This could be moved to the following Monday evening.

Bulls odds drop to 5-1

Skybet have dropped the odds available on Hereford United winning the Conference.

They were offering 6-1, but have cut their quote to 5-1 which is being offered by most other bookmakers.

The "best" prices for other top clubs are as follows:

Aldershot 9-1
Stevenage 10-1
Greys Athletic 12-1
Morecambe 12-1
Exeter 12-1
Accrington 18-1
Kidderminster 20-1
Dagenham 20-1
Halifax 20-1

Exiles club renamed BEST

The recently launched Hereford United Exiles Supporters Club is changing its name.

It will now be known as BEST - Bulls Exiles Supporters Troop.

Chris Jones, who came up with original idea, has told Bulls News that he has already had over 40 enquiries about joining the Troop. He is hoping for more interest now that the fixtures have been published.

Just in case any reader missed the article dated June 10th that accompanied the launch, it is reprinted below:

During the last week of April I aged immeasurably. This was due to the fact that United were playing in the play-offs and I didn't know if I would be there to see it. This wasn't due to a lack of enthusiasm on my part, but due to where I live, as the Club had decided to sell tickets only to people who were able to queue for the tickets. Fortunately I was lucky and managed to get people to queue for tickets on my behalf, but the experience got me thinking about how this problem could be overcome in the future. With this in mind, I have decided to form an Exiles Supporters Club, which will be open to all Hereford United supporters living outside Herefordshire. I have spoken to Graham Turner and Joan Fennessy, and they are both happy with my proposals, which are as follows:-

1. Membership will be open to any Hereford United supporter living outside Herefordshire.

2. There will be a £10 membership fee per season. £5 of this will go straight to Hereford United, for enrolment in the Club's Membership scheme. This will automatically put members in the priority level below Season Ticket holders in the event of matches being made all-ticket, or when tickets are sold in advance of matches. The remaining £5 will be used for any administrative expenses arising during the season, e g posting of tickets to members, payment to Hereford United, etc. If there is any money left at the end of a season, this will be used to sponsor a player and/or matchball and/or a match.

3. If Hereford United or a home club decide that a match is to be all-ticket, members will have a set time to advise me of their intention to buy a ticket. I will then order the tickets from Hereford United, and distribute them on receipt of the payment. This will save people living all over the country form having to get family and friends living in Hereford to queue on their behalf.

As the Exiles Supporters Club develops, it might be possible for supporters to be put in touch with others in their area, for travel purposes or to host United fans when a match is being played in their area. If you are interested in joining the Exiles Supporters Club, please contact me at the following e-mail address:- zebemach@ukonline.co.uk

I would also be receptive to anyone who might also be able to design a logo for membership cards.

I look forward to hearing from you, along with any questions or ideas that you may have.

Chris Jones.

Coldicott talks about a move

Stacy Coldicott has been talking to the Grimsby Telegraph about a move away from Blundell Park.

The following is an edited version of the article by David Pye.

Grimsby Town midfielder Stacy Coldicott has confirmed he is moving on from Blundell Park this summer.

The 31-year-old Town man is out-of-contract with the Mariners and says he feels the time is right to leave. But while the Redditch-born battler has decided to move on, he adds that his future isn't decided despite rumours linking him with Conference side Hereford.

Coldicott told the Telegraph: "Nothing has been sorted out yet and I've not signed anything.

"I am just trying to keep fit at the moment.

"It can be frustrating at this time when you haven't sorted a contract out but you just have to sit tight and see what happens.

"I have spoken to Hereford and the talks were positive but nothing has happened yet.

"It's a case of wait and see with them, but I'm not panicking."

Coldicott has been training with his Grimsby team-mates this week.

"To be fair to the gaffer (Russell Slade) and Grez (Graham Rodger), they were willing to let me go in and train with the lads to keep my fitness up and that's been great.

"It suits both parties really because I can help with a bit of experience with the new lads and it also helps me stay fit.

Coldicott's inevitable departure from Grimsby ends a seven-year association at Blundell Park after his £125,000 capture from West Brom in July 1998. In that time he played more than 240 games for the Mariners in three divisions.

It would have been more games had Coldicott not broken his leg two years ago which kept him out for nine months.

Grimsby have been relegated twice in successive seasons when manager Russell Slade arrived from Scarborough and Coldicott had to fight hard to get back in the team.

However he ended last season as a first choice midfielder and even scored a goal, his first for four years. However he wants a new challenge this coming season.

"It was a disappointing year for everyone last season. After relegation it was crucial we consolidated but despite playing well at times, it never quite happened for us.

"Personally, I thought I had a better second half of the season last year but I did start to think about the future and to be honest have probably been doing for some time.

"After seven years here, I felt at the end of the season that it was probably time for a change.

"Sometimes you can get stale after so long at a club and need a new challenge. That's why I decided it was time to part ways this summer but it was all amicable.

"I don't owe the club anything and they don't owe me anything so we have parted on good terms.

"I played for seven years and always gave my all.

"Now I'm getting ready to move on, wherever it may be, I am just happy to play football regularly.

"But after being here for so long, of course I wish Grimsby all the best and I hope they can get it right next year."

Turner confirms interest in two players

The Worcester News has confirmed that Graham Turner is in talks with defender Dean Beckwith and midfielder Stacy Coldicott.

"We are very interested in him (Coldicott) and we are continuing talks," said Turner. "But he is still registered with Grimsby Town. It's the same with Dean - we are in talks.

"I am looking to bring in six, maybe seven players. Because the transfer window has been brought in, restricting teams from signing players during the season, we need our squad to be a little bit bigger than last year. I am looking at 20 to 22 players in total."

For Graham Turner to go into print with the names of these two players shows that he must be reasonably confident of them signing for Hereford United.

Anysinah may move from Bristol

Joe Anysinah, who impressed Hereford United supporters whilst on-loan at Edgar Street, could be leaving Bristol City.

The Western Daily Press has reported that Anyinsah is talking to Preston much to the disappointment of City boss Brian Tinnion.

"Joe told me on Tuesday night that he would be in on Wednesday to sign his contract," said Tinnion. "But I got a call this morning to say that he was speaking to Preston.

"He's been here since he was eight and did very well for us when he played last season.

"If he leaves we would be looking for a decent amount of money in compensation."

No Kidderminster derby this Christmas

Hereford United will not entertain Kidderminster Harriers this Christmas.

The Conference fixture list, just released, has crushed any hopes the Bulls had of a particularily lucrative gate over the Festive period.

It is not immediately known why the two clubs could not meet at that time but it is possible that the Police may have objected.

The Police have the right to ask clubs not to hold fixtures if they feel that they would have difficulty in finding enough officers to be on crowd duty.

More on the fixtures shortly.

The fans matter at Hereford United

A Letter in this morning's Hereford Times gives Hereford United a pat on the back for being a caring club.

Just want to tell you a heart warning story in an age when corporate sponsorship, brand image and money seem to dominate the national headlines about football.

My dad and I go to Hereford United as often as we can, in total over 70 years between us! My dad has always been a season-ticket holder but because I live away and also study at university at weekends, in the past I have not bought a season ticket.

My dad is disabled having suffered a stroke some times ago, but he has never let that stop him from getting up in the stand to take his seat. During the last season my dad was also diagnosed with cancer and, although he missed some of the early season, by December, with my help, he managed to go back for virtually every home match until the last with Stevenage.

My dad is still ill, so he will need my help next season to get up to his seast, so I wrote to the club for a season ticket, asking them to allocate me the seat next to him. I was realy upset to find out that that seat had been allocated to the club sponsors and I wouldn't be able to sit with him.

I ran the club to find out more and told them our story. They put me on hold for five minutes and then said they would move the sponsors so thast my dad and I could sit together.

I just think this is a great story from football's grassroots! It seems that after all in some clubs the fans do matter.

I also want to thank Hereford United for being so caring.

Vicki Morris, Bristol

Two deals agreed says Turner

Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, has told the Hereford Times that he has agreed deals with two ex-League players. An announcement is expected as soon as their contracts end at their present club possibly as early as tomorrow.

However Turner will still be looking to tie up several more deals as he looks to increase the size of his squad because of the introduction of a transfer window in the Conference.

"We are now thinking of a squad of 22 whereas it probably would have been 18 at the start.

"I'm sure the changes in the rules will put a strain on some clubs but fortunately we have the scope to increase our squad."

Players return to Edgar Street for training next Wednesday but Jamie Pitman won't be with them as he is at Lilleshall getting back into condition after his shoulder operation.

Simon Travis is hoping to take part in some training after his injuries sustained in Ireland last month.

"The other players have been working with fitness coach Tony Ford and so we expect them to return in good shape," commented Turner.

Another signing on the cards

Gillingham defender Dean Beckwith is rumoured to have sealed a contract with Hereford United.

21-year-old Beckwith has experience in the Conference having spent a loan period with Dagenham & Redbridge, and featured in the 1-1 draw at Edgar Street in October 2003.

He was released by Gillingham earlier this month having come through the youth system at Priestfield, and spent a spell on loan at Margate last season.

Beckwith stands at six foot three, and an announcement regarding his signing is expected later this week.

Updated 9pm:

Wayne Jones, the Hereford United physio, used to be at Gillingham and would know all about Beckwith.

Aiston could move to Conference

Sam Aiston, who has been released by Shrewsbury Town, could move to a Conference club.

The 28 year old had talks with Kidderminster yesterday and, with the Harriers looking to have solved their ownership problems, he might make the move to Aggborough.

However Burton Albion are beleived to have offered the winger a two year deal and there is speculation that Hereford United may also be interested.

"There are a few clubs after him," said Stuart Watkiss, the Harriers manager.

"I understand he will speak to a couple of other clubs later this week and make his decision soon after that."
